Chapter 2

The flowers arrived on Tuesday.

I was in the kitchen. Wiping down counters that were already clean. The doorman called up. A delivery. I told him to leave it in the lobby. I wasn't expecting anything.

But twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang.

I opened it. A massive bouquet. White roses and lilies. The kind that cost more than most people's rent. The delivery man smiled and handed them over. I carried them inside.

The card was small. Cream-colored. Expensive paper.

Congratulations on your promotion, Melany. You've earned this. —D

I stood there. The flowers were heavy in my arms. The scent was overwhelming. Lilies. I'd always hated lilies.

I walked to the kitchen. I opened the trash can. I dropped the entire arrangement inside. Stems snapped. Water dripped onto the tile. I closed the lid.

I didn't feel anything.

That was Wednesday morning.

Wednesday afternoon, my phone rang.

I didn't recognize the number. I answered anyway.

"Ms. Edwards?" A woman's voice. Professional. Careful.

"Yes."

"This is Amanda from billing at Lenox Hill Hospital. I'm calling regarding your mother's account."

My stomach dropped.

"Is she okay?"

"Her condition is stable," Amanda said quickly. "But we've encountered an issue with her insurance coverage. The payments have been discontinued. Effective immediately."

I sat down. My legs just folded.

"That's not possible," I said. "The coverage is through my husband's company. Executive spousal benefits. It's automatic."

"I understand," Amanda said. Her voice was kind. Too kind. "But we received notification this morning that the policy has been restructured. Your mother's treatments are no longer covered under the current plan."

The room tilted.

"How long does she have?"

Amanda paused.

"Without alternative funding, we'll need to discontinue her current care protocol within seventy-two hours."

Seventy-two hours.

Three days.

"We can discuss payment plans," Amanda continued. "But given the cost of her treatment regimen, I need to be transparent—most families find it difficult to manage without insurance support."

I knew the numbers. Thirty thousand a month. Sometimes more.

I thanked her. I hung up.

I sat on the kitchen floor. The tile was cold. I pressed my palms against it.

This was Melany.

Melany, with her new title. Her new authority. Her restructured benefits.

This was Darren.

Darren, who'd given her the power. Who'd handed her the knife and turned away.

I stood up. I walked to his study. The door was closed. I didn't knock.

He was at his desk. Laptop open. He glanced up. Irritated.

"I'm working."

"The hospital called," I said. "My mother's coverage has been canceled."

He looked back at his screen.

"That's unfortunate."

"Darren." My voice cracked. I hated it. "Please. She'll die."

"I'm sure that's an exaggeration."

"It's not." I walked closer. "They're discontinuing her treatment in three days. I need you to reverse this."

He closed his laptop. Slowly. He leaned back in his chair.

"The restructuring was a company-wide initiative," he said. "Executive benefits were reviewed and adjusted for efficiency. It's standard business practice."

"This isn't business." My hands were shaking. "This is my mother."

"And the benefits package is under the purview of our VP of Operations." He folded his hands. "If you have concerns about the restructuring, I suggest you schedule a meeting with Ms. Gomez."

I stared at him.

He wasn't even pretending.

"You gave her this authority," I said quietly. "You knew what she'd do."

"I gave her a promotion she earned." His voice was ice. "What she does with her responsibilities is her decision. Not mine."

"You're killing her."

"Don't be dramatic." He opened his laptop again. "You embarrassed me in front of my entire executive team. You demanded a divorce. Did you think there wouldn't be consequences?"

I couldn't breathe.

"You made a choice, Freyja," he continued. His eyes didn't leave the screen. "You chose to humiliate me. To disrespect this marriage. To forget what I've provided for you. For your mother."

He looked up. His face was blank.

"This is what happens when you forget your place."

I stood there. The study was silent except for the sound of his fingers on the keyboard.

The leash.

I'd felt it tighten before. But this—this was different.

This was a noose.

"If I take it back," I whispered. "If I apologize. If I—"

"Schedule a meeting with Melany," he said. "Beg her if you have to. Maybe she'll be generous."

He dismissed me with a glance.

I walked out. I closed the door behind me.

I stood in the hallway. The penthouse was silent. Beautiful. Perfect.

I thought of my mother. In her hospital bed. The machines beeping. The IV drip.

Seventy-two hours.

I pressed my hand against the wall. The paint was smooth. Cool.

I had no money of my own. No job. No access to accounts Darren controlled.

I had nothing.

Except the knowledge that the man I'd sacrificed five years for would let my mother die to teach me a lesson.

I walked to the bedroom. I sat on the edge of the bed.

I picked up my phone.

I stared at Melany's contact information.

And I understood, with perfect clarity, that I had already lost.
