Chapter 4

The argument came through my headphones at two-seventeen AM, sharp and vicious enough to jolt me from the edge of sleep.

"You need to stop calling me." Bonnie's voice, stripped of its usual affected sweetness. Raw. Panicked.

"I'll stop calling when you stop lying." A man's voice, deep and controlled. Not Cassius—the cadence was wrong, the authority too genuine. "You told me you'd handle this."

"I am handling it. Cassius thinks the baby is his. The wedding is back on track. Everything is fine."

"Everything is not fine. You're carrying my child and letting another man claim paternity. That's fraud, Bonnie. That's—"

"That's survival." Her voice cracked. "You think I want to be stuck with you? A corporate raider who treats people like chess pieces? At least Cassius comes with a name, a legacy, social standing—"

"A bankrupt legacy. His company is circling the drain."

"Which is why I need the Hudson name before it all collapses. Once I'm married to him, once the baby has his last name, I'll be protected. Society doesn't abandon mothers, Ryan. They abandon mistresses."

Ryan.

Ryan Hughes.

I sat up straighter, my pulse suddenly loud in my ears. Ryan Hughes, who'd been trying to acquire Hudson Corporation's Asian markets for three years. Ryan Hughes, who Cassius called a vulture at every charity gala. Ryan Hughes, who was apparently sleeping with my fiancé's mistress and had gotten her pregnant.

The irony was so perfect it almost hurt.

"You're using me," Ryan said, his voice gone cold.

"We're using each other. Don't pretend this was ever about love."

Silence. Then: "When this blows up—and it will blow up, Bonnie—don't come crying to me."

"It won't blow up. Serena Grant is too busy playing the wounded socialite to notice anything. She's exactly what everyone thinks she is—pretty, polished, and completely useless."

I smiled in the dark. Let them underestimate me. Let them all underestimate me.

The call ended. I saved the recording, labeled it carefully, and added it to the growing file that would eventually bury them all.

Then I texted Victoria: *Need a PI. Discreet. Expensive. Yesterday.*

Her response came immediately: *I know a guy.*

---

The private investigator looked like someone's disappointed uncle—rumpled suit, coffee-stained tie, the kind of face that disappeared in crowds. Perfect.

"Ryan Hughes and Bonnie Lopez," I said, sliding a folder across the table of the anonymous café in Brooklyn. "I need photographs. Timestamps. DNA evidence if possible."

He didn't blink. "DNA evidence requires—"

"I know what it requires. Get creative."

He studied me for a long moment, then nodded. "Two weeks. Maybe three."

"You have one."

"Miss Grant—"

"One week. I'll double your rate."

He took the folder. "You're not what I expected."

"No one ever expects me. That's the point."

---

The photographs arrived six days later in a manila envelope marked CONFIDENTIAL. I spread them across my bedroom floor like tarot cards reading my future.

Bonnie and Ryan at a hotel in Tribeca. Bonnie and Ryan in his car, her hand on his thigh. Bonnie and Ryan at a medical clinic—the kind that didn't ask questions or keep records that could be subpoenaed.

And the DNA report, clinical and damning: 99.9% probability of paternity between Ryan Hughes and the fetal sample obtained through what the report carefully didn't explain.

I didn't ask how the PI had managed it. Some things were better left unknown.

I photographed everything, uploaded it to an encrypted server, and sent Victoria a single word: *Ammunition.*

---

The signing ceremony happened in the Hudson boardroom, all leather and mahogany and the smell of old money trying to pretend it wasn't dying.

Eleanor Hudson sat at the head of the table, her smile tight. My parents flanked me like prison guards. Cassius lounged across from me, his confidence restored now that he thought he'd won.

Victoria sat beside me, her expression professionally neutral. In her briefcase: two versions of the prenuptial agreement. One that would destroy me. One that would destroy them.

"Shall we begin?" Eleanor's voice dripped false warmth.

I reached for the document, let my hand tremble slightly. Played the nervous bride. "This is really happening."

"Cold feet?" Cassius smirked. "Little late for that."

I picked up the coffee cup in front of me—too fast, too clumsy. It tipped, sending hot liquid cascading across the table directly onto Eleanor's cream Chanel suit.

She shrieked, jumping up. "My suit! This is—"

"I'm so sorry!" I was already moving, grabbing napkins, creating chaos. Everyone rushed to help Eleanor, to save the documents from the spreading coffee.

Everyone except Victoria.

In the confusion, she made the switch. Forty pages of legal text, identical in every way except the clauses that mattered. The ones that gave me power of attorney over Cassius's assets upon proven infidelity or fraud. The ones that made him liable for any debts incurred through deception.

The ones that would let me take everything.

"I'm such a disaster," I said, my voice breaking perfectly. "I'm sorry, I'm just so nervous—"

"It's fine," Eleanor said through gritted teeth, dabbing at her ruined suit. "Let's just finish this."

We sat back down. Victoria placed the modified prenup in front of me, the pages slightly damp but readable. I signed my name with a shaking hand.

Cassius barely glanced at it before signing. Why would he? He thought he'd already won.

My father signed as witness. Eleanor signed. Victoria notarized it with her official seal.

"Congratulations," Eleanor said, her smile sharp. "Welcome to the family, Serena."

I smiled back, sweet and docile. "I can't wait to be a Hudson."

Liar. I couldn't wait to destroy them.

But they'd find that out soon enough.
