Chapter 4

The boss hurried out of his office and turned to Chloe.

“You were wronged before, that’s true. But if you do well on the next project, the bonus will only be bigger.”

Right in front of me, he handed the project I had prepared a week ago to Sabrina and Chloe.

When he asked me to draft the proposal, he told me that if the project went well, the promotion would be mine.

Back then, Chloe had even complained on my behalf.

“Sabrina can’t even do proper background research on the client’s company. She’s no better than me, but somehow she’s on the same level as you.

“You should have been promoted already. Instead, they’re making you work even harder.”

But now, Chloe was standing beside Sabrina, holding the project and looking at me with a smug expression.

Sabrina and Chloe thought they had picked up a bargain.

What they did not know was that there was still an unresolved problem in the proposal.

If it was not fixed, the consequences would be more than the boss could repay even if he lost everything.

I had planned to use my vacation time to solve it.

Now, I no longer had to worry about it.

The boss did not have to worry either. After all, those two were equally incompetent. They might not even notice it.

I could not help laughing. Then I walked toward the door, feeling lighter than I had in years.

As Sabrina brushed past me, she leaned close to my ear and said, “Natalie, this won’t end well for you.”

I raised an eyebrow.

The ones it would not end well for were them.

I had planned to take some time off, but an older college friend who had been trying to recruit me was afraid another company would snap me up first.

He offered me a $30,000 base salary per month on the spot.

He also gave me a benefit before my official start date: one hundred days of paid vacation.

After signing the contract with him, I began my vacation routine.

I was lying in a lakeside inn near Lake Haven when I unexpectedly received a message from Chloe.

[I heard you still haven’t started anywhere. Looks like everyone knows what kind of person you are. No one wants you at all.]

[Our project gets signed tomorrow. That million-dollar year-end bonus? I’ll spend it for you, Mentor.]

[I used to think earning commission was hard. Then I realized you had been stealing it from us all along.]

I had no intention of responding to Chloe’s rambling.

But three days later, she suddenly sent me another message.

[The top salesperson who slept her way to the top. How shameless. Some of those bosses have families. Aren’t you afraid karma will come for you after being someone’s mistress?]

[Turns out your mother was a homewrecker who climbed her way up. No wonder you could do something so cheap.]

[Good thing we fired you. Otherwise, you really would have held our company back.]

I froze. I tried to reply, only to find that she had already blocked and deleted me.

Many people in the industry also came to ask me what was going on.

Only then did I discover that my former company’s rumors about me had already gone viral.

I was so angry that my whole body shook. I contacted a lawyer right away to preserve the evidence.

Filing a police report would take time, but online, people took my silence as an admission and joined in, even attacking my mother.

My mother was so furious she ended up in the hospital.

I was forced to end my vacation early.

The day I arrived at the hospital, Chloe showed up with a crowd of reporters and surrounded me.

“Natalie, as a well-known top salesperson in the industry, don’t you feel any guilt for using such dirty methods?”

Chloe pressed me for an answer.

The reporters shoved their cameras into my face.

Chloe leaned close to my ear and whispered, “Remember this day. It’s the day your career ends.”

I slapped the court summons against her face.

“Then you remember this too. Today is the countdown to your arrest.”

Chloe smiled and shook her head.

“No. Tonight is the celebration dinner for my project. It’s a double victory.”

But the moment she finished speaking, her phone rang.

Sabrina’s voice came through the line.

“Chloe, there’s a major problem with the project. Get back here now!”
