Chapter 1

I gasped, clutching my chest as an unfamiliar warmth spread through my body. For a year, there had been nothing but cold emptiness where my wolf once resided—a void so profound it had nearly driven me to madness. But now, something stirred within that hollow space.

"I am here."

The voice was faint, barely a whisper, but unmistakable. Lyra. My wolf. My other half.

"Lyra?" I whispered into the stillness of my recovery cabin, moonlight streaming through the windows and casting long shadows across the wooden floor. "Is it really you?"

Silence followed, and for a moment, I feared I had imagined it—another cruel trick of my desperate mind. Then I felt it again: a gentle pulse, like the flutter of butterfly wings against my consciousness.

"I am here, Celeste. I never left. I was just... lost."

Tears streamed down my face as I sank to my knees on the cold floor. For a year, I had endured the pitying glances, the whispers behind my back—Luna without a wolf, a broken mate, a burden to her Alpha. Damon had visited less and less frequently, always with excuses about pack business. My son Kai's visits had become perfunctory, his eyes never quite meeting mine.

I had attributed it all to shame—shame at having a wolfless mother, a wolfless Luna. Now, with Lyra's presence warming my soul once more, I needed to see them, to share this miracle.

"Should we tell Damon?" I asked Lyra, already reaching for my phone.

Lyra's response was unexpectedly hesitant. "Wait. Let us feel the moon first. Let us be whole again before we share ourselves."

Something in her tone gave me pause. It wasn't just caution—it was suspicion.

"What aren't you telling me?" I pressed, but Lyra remained silent, her presence warm but guarded.

I stepped outside my cabin, the full moon hanging heavy and luminous above the trees. Its silver light called to me in a way I hadn't felt in a year, tugging at my bones, singing in my blood.

"Shift with me," Lyra urged. "Remember what we are."

I stripped off my nightgown, letting the cool night air caress my skin. The transformation came easier than I expected—not the agonizing, failed attempts of months past, but a smooth, natural flow of bone and sinew reshaping itself. Silver fur erupted across my body, and suddenly I was standing on four paws, my senses sharper than any human's could ever be.

The forest exploded with information: the scent of deer that had passed hours ago, the distant howls of patrol wolves, and something else—something that made my hackles rise. Familiar scents intertwined in ways that felt wrong.

I moved silently through the trees, Lyra guiding my steps. We kept to the shadows, avoiding the patrol routes I still remembered from my days as active Luna. The pack house loomed ahead, warm light spilling from its windows.

I crept closer, staying downwind, until I reached a large bay window. Inside, the scene that greeted me shattered my world into a thousand razor-sharp pieces.

Damon, my mate, my Alpha, sat on the couch in our living room—our living room—with his arm around a woman I recognized instantly. Seraphina Vale. The rogue who had led the attack that separated me from Lyra. The woman who had destroyed my life.

And beside them, laughing at something Seraphina had said, was my son, Kai. They looked... happy. Comfortable. Like a family.

Lyra growled deep in our shared consciousness, a sound of pure rage that echoed my own breaking heart. "They betrayed us," she snarled. "While we suffered, while we fought to find each other again, they replaced us."

I watched as Damon pressed a kiss to Seraphina's temple, as Kai leaned against her shoulder with casual affection. The intimacy of their gestures told me this was no new arrangement. This had been happening while I lay broken, believing my mate's lies about pack business keeping him away.

I retreated silently into the forest, my mind racing faster than my paws. When I reached my cabin, I shifted back, my human form shaking not with exertion but with a cold, clarifying fury.

"We will destroy them all," I whispered to Lyra as I pulled my nightgown back on. "Not with claws or teeth, but with something far more devastating."

Lyra's agreement rumbled through me like distant thunder. "Yes. But they must not know I have returned. Not yet."

I nodded, wiping away tears that were no longer of joy but of a determination so fierce it burned. "They think I'm weak. Broken. Let them keep thinking that while we plan their downfall."

The mate bond I shared with Damon tugged at me, urging me to reach out, to connect. I ruthlessly suppressed it. For the first time, I was grateful for the year of practice I'd had in living with pain.

"Patience," Lyra counseled as I climbed back into bed, my mind already calculating, planning. "We will have our revenge, but it must be perfect. Complete."

"Yes," I agreed, staring at the ceiling. "When we strike, they won't just fall. They will shatter."
