Chapter 2

The noon sky darkened without warning, gray clouds rolling in like an uninvited guest. I was pruning my hydrangeas when the first fat raindrops splattered against my skin. Within seconds, the gentle shower transformed into a torrential downpour, wind whipping through the garden with unexpected fury.

A loud crack made me jump. One of our fence panels tore loose, sailing through the air toward my carefully tended roses. I lunged forward instinctively, but the heavy wood was already crashing down, crushing several prized blooms beneath it.

"Need a hand?"

I spun around, rain plastering my hair to my face. Grayson stood at the garden gate, already soaked, dark hair dripping onto his shoulders. Without waiting for an answer, he strode across the lawn, toolbox in hand.

"Where did you come from?" I shouted over the storm.

"Saw the panel go from my window." He knelt beside the fallen fence, examining the damage. "Thought you might need rescuing."

I wrapped my arms around myself, suddenly aware of how my thin blouse clung to my skin. "I don't need rescuing."

"The roses might disagree." His smile was infuriating, confident. He pulled out a hammer and nails, working with practiced efficiency despite the rain.

I should have gone inside. Should have thanked him politely and retreated to safety. Instead, I found myself kneeling beside him, holding the panel steady as he hammered it back into place.

He worked so close I could feel the heat radiating from his body, smell the faint scent of coffee and something distinctly male. His forearm brushed against mine as he reached for another nail, and I nearly dropped my end of the fence.

"Your private sanctuary," he observed, glancing around at my garden. "Bet you spend hours out here escaping."

"Escaping what?" The question came out defensive.

"Whatever needs escaping." His dark eyes held mine for a beat too long. "Everyone's running from something, Sylvia Trent."

The way he said my name—like he was tasting it—sent a shiver through me that had nothing to do with the rain.

"There," he announced, hammering the final nail. "Good as new."

"Thank you." My voice sounded strange, breathless.

"You've got..." He reached out, his thumb brushing my cheek. "Mud."

I should have stepped back. Instead, I stood frozen as his finger lingered against my skin.

"You should smile more often," he said softly. "It suits you."

Only then did I realize I was smiling—genuinely smiling—for the first time in what felt like years. The realization startled me more than the thunder cracking overhead.

"I should go in," I whispered.

He nodded, but neither of us moved for several heartbeats. Finally, he stepped back, breaking whatever spell had momentarily ensnared us both.

"Don't be a stranger, neighbor," he called over his shoulder as he walked away, toolbox swinging at his side.

I stood in the rain long after he disappeared, touching my cheek where his finger had been.

---

"Sylvia, what is this?"

Charles's voice cut through the quiet evening like a blade. I looked up from my book to find him standing in the doorway, household ledger in hand, face tight with displeasure.

"What's wrong?" I asked, though I already knew.

"Three hundred and twenty-seven dollars at the pharmacy last week." He flipped the page. "Another hundred and fifty at that organic market." His eyes narrowed. "And a hundred dollars cash withdrawal that isn't accounted for."

I set my book down. "Marianne's new medication—"

"Is covered by insurance." He cut me off. "I'm not an idiot, Sylvia. You're being careless with our money again."

"Our money?" The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Charles went very still. "Excuse me?"

I should have backed down. Should have apologized. But something inside me—perhaps the lingering warmth of a genuine smile in the rain—refused to retreat.

"I said, our money. As in, yours and mine. As in, I should have some say in how it's spent, especially when it comes to my sister's health."

He closed the ledger with a snap. "Need I remind you of the terms of our agreement? The prenup you signed specifically outlines—"

"I know what I signed." My voice trembled. "But Marianne needs—"

"What Marianne needs is a sister who understands financial responsibility." His tone turned icy. "Your allowance will be reduced by two hundred dollars this month to cover the discrepancy."

"Charles, please—"

"This discussion is over." He turned to leave, then paused. "And Sylvia? Remember that without me, your sister would have no treatment at all. I suggest you consider that before questioning me again."

The threat hung in the air long after he left the room. Tears burned behind my eyes as I fled to the garden, my only sanctuary.

The night air was cool against my flushed skin as I sank onto the stone bench among my roses. I didn't bother wiping away the tears that streamed down my face.

"Bad night?"

I startled at the voice, looking up to find Grayson leaning against my garden gate, a pair of garden shears in his hand.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, hastily wiping my cheeks.

"Returning these." He held up the shears. "You left them by the fence earlier."

I stood, crossing the garden to take them from him. "Thank you."

Instead of releasing the tool, he held on, his fingers brushing mine. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." The lie tasted bitter.

"No, you're not."

Before I could respond, he leaned forward—and before I could even register it, his hand suddenly grabbed my chin, pulling me into a kiss. It was urgent, heated, driven by desire, leaving no room for hesitation.
