Chapter 12

Early one morning, Kayleigh Gardner paced nervously outside the main entrance of Westfield High School.

Finally, the security guard couldn't ignore her anxious demeanor any longer and stepped out from the gatehouse. "Hey, ma'am, can I help you with anything?"

"I’m looking for my granddaughter, Aylin Scott," Kayleigh replied, her voice trembling with emotion. Tears welled up in her eyes as distress took over. "Please, I need your help! I jumped on the first bus to the city this morning and now I'm completely lost. How could I be so careless?"

"Don't worry, ma'am," the guard said empathetically, noticing her distress. "What grade is your granddaughter in? I’ll help you find her."

"I have no idea! Everything feels so complicated here, and it's really urgent!"

"Alright, ma'am, don't panic. Why don't you step inside the gatehouse while I figure this out?"

Aylin, informed of the situation, rushed outside. Seeing her grandmother in such a state sent a wave of dread through her—something must be terribly wrong. "What's going on, Grandma? What happened?"

Kayleigh glanced over at the guard before pulling Aylin aside, wanting to speak away from prying ears. The guard looked slightly taken aback; after the urgency, she didn't want him involved further. He shrugged and returned to his post.

"Your father's in trouble! Police officers came and took him away!" Kayleigh exclaimed, her anxiety turning tears into a flood. Despite her disappointment in her son’s reckless ways, he was family. How could she manage this scandal?

"What? They arrested Dad? My aunt and uncle are visiting the Grand Canyon—no one’s home. Don't worry, Grandma. Just tell me what happened as clearly as you can."

"I don't really understand myself. They said your dad stabbed someone at a hotel. How could he do something so rash? This is serious!" Kayleigh stomped her foot in frustration and fear.

Aylin's mind reeled. Her father, a murderer? It had to be a misunderstanding. He was reckless but not criminal. There had to be an error, she told herself.

"Grandma, take this key to my aunt’s apartment and rest for a bit. I’ll call her and see if she can come back early. I’ll go find Dad and figure out what's going on. They must've gotten the wrong person. We know him—he wouldn't hurt anyone."

"Yes, yes, he wouldn’t..." Kayleigh squeezed Aylin's hand, grateful for her granddaughter's calm demeanor amidst the chaos, realizing her deep need for Aylin’s strength.

Inside the dim confines of the holding cell, Raiden Gardner huddled alone in a corner, his heart pounding with fear; the thought of spending his life behind bars made him shiver. He had brushed off responsibilities that Aylin’s mother, his sister, often chided him about. Now, looking back, those tomorrows he'd banked on seemed to vanish into thin air. He feared he might never make things right again for his mother or daughter.

"Raiden, Raiden!" A familiar voice interrupted his spiral of thoughts.

He looked up and recognized his ex-wife, Kayleigh Myers. What was she doing here? She looked put-together, yet here she was. Did they still have anything left to say? Embarrassed, he turned away.

"Raiden, please don't," Kayleigh implored, a heavy weight on her heart. She had once felt love and hatred for him. After their divorce, she believed they would never cross paths again. But seeing him now, she couldn't turn away from his plight. It wasn't love anymore, nor mere sympathy.

"Raiden, seeing you like this breaks my heart. I want to help, but I don't know how. We have a daughter together—don’t shut me out."

Raiden shook his head defensively, "No, Kayleigh, don’t pretend to care! And don’t bring Aylin into this. I failed as a father; you’re not much better as a mother. Poor Aylin, stuck with us for parents! But hear me out: if I get out, I’ll make it up to her. You won’t get the chance. In her mind, you’re practically a stranger."

"I know I failed her! But Raiden, ask yourself who led us here. I tolerated your drinking and gambling, hoping you would change. But when that woman showed up at our door flaunting your affair, how much more was I supposed to endure? I was tired of waiting for you to come back to us. Could I sacrifice my dignity for our daughter’s sake? It wasn’t something I could do," Kayleigh choked out, tears streaming down her face.

Maybe it was her tears, her words, or their shared past, but Raiden felt a pang of remorse. He moved closer, gently holding her hand through the bars, "Kayleigh..."

This warmth, this touch, was the first time in years she felt connected to the man she had a child with. She closed her eyes, resting her cheek against their joined hands.

"Kayleigh, when I get out, could we start fresh? With Aylin—we could be a family again..."

Kayleigh shook her head, tears in her eyes. "No, Raiden, I have a life now. I have a husband, another daughter..."

"That’s ridiculous! Aylin is your true daughter! What does that other child mean to you?"

"She's my daughter too," Kayleigh replied with a bittersweet smile. "When her mother went into rehab, she was just a toddler. I raised her; how could I not love her as my own?"

"But what about us? Our daughter?" Raiden's voice cracked, as he turned to see his daughter standing silently in the doorway, her tear-streaked face mirroring his despair. "Aylin?!"

At home, Kayleigh felt the life inside her stir more frequently, a constant reminder of the bond she shared with her husband, Duane Palmer. This child, their child, was a testament to their shared life. Despite her past, Duane had shown her love and acceptance beyond expectation.

Yet, her illness weighed heavily on her. The pain in her left side was growing more frequent and intense, sometimes causing cramps. The fear of leaving her loved ones haunted her. The thought of dying, leaving Duane, Aylin, and her unborn child was overwhelming. Every night, as she lay awake watching Duane sleep, she couldn’t stop the tears.

Duane had proposed in the most unexpected way, turning her life upside down with joy. Their life together had been deeply fulfilling and she cherished every moment. There was no raging passion, just steady warmth. That, she realized, was marriage—navigating the ordinary with love and responsibility.

Now, facing her illness, she felt the weight of her choices. Her impending absence meant loss for her family. The thought of them living without her crushed her spirit. She understood the finality of death, yet her heart ached for the life she built.

Pain seized her, sharp and crippling. Holding her belly, she tried to ease it but her chest heaved with desperate breaths.

Duane woke to her frantic movements, fear gripping his heart, "Kayleigh, what's wrong?" Seeing her distress, he rushed to her, "What’s hurting?"

Kayleigh managed to whisper, "Call an ambulance."

Duane dialed frantically, his voice trembling. "Yes, this is Duane Palmer. We need an ambulance immediately!"

As doctors rushed Kayleigh into the emergency room, Duane paced the hallway, hands wringing in anxiety. Remembering their daughter at home, he called his ex-wife, pleading, "Megan, it’s Duane. Kayleigh’s in trouble. Please look after Alyssa for a while."

"Of course. Don’t worry, I won’t reveal who I am," Megan replied, her voice carrying a note of sadness. Once his wife, now on the fringes of his life, she realized how much she missed her daughter, grateful for the chance to care for her.

Duane barely registered Megan’s emotions, consumed by worry for Kayleigh. When the doctor emerged, his heart sank.

"Mr. Palmer?" the doctor inquired.

"Yes?" Duane’s voice was barely audible.

The doctor hesitated before speaking. "Your wife has a severe condition. She’s been diagnosed with breast cancer and..."

"Cancer?!" Duane felt his world collapse. He had missed the signs, blinded by denial. "Doctor, whatever it takes, save her, please!"

The doctor steadied him. "We’ll do our best, Mr. Palmer. Your wife avoided treatment to protect your unborn child, but her stress has accelerated the cancer’s spread. We need your consent for an emergency C-section to treat her."

"Yes, save her!" Duane wept openly, oblivious to appearances. He vowed to save her, even if it meant losing the child.

Amid rushed preparations, Kayleigh was moved, clinging to Duane's hand, whispering through tears, "Don’t cry like a child, silly. I’ll be fine."

"You’re the silly one," Duane said, tears falling on her hand.

"We’ll meet him soon."

"I just want you. Kayleigh, stay strong. I’m waiting for you."

"If I don’t make it..."

"Don’t say that, Kayleigh!" Duane covered her mouth. "You’re not just a mother or a wife. You’re my life. What would I do without you?"

Kayleigh’s tears answered him, "Duane, I don’t want to leave you. I wish I could promise forever, but you have to stay strong for our children. Maybe invite Megan back… She loves you, she cares for Alyssa..."

"No! I only want you!" Duane’s heartache intensified. The more she spoke of sacrifice, the more he clung to her.

Kayleigh smiled weakly as they parted, believing she was about to meet their child.

A mother's heart, like a timeless ocean, harbors infinite love and rebirth. Despite her fears, Kayleigh only wished to stay, fighting every step toward her fate for the family she cherished. The thought of departing them enveloped her, but she found solace in the possibility of life renewed through her child.

"Goodbye," she whispered as her stretcher disappeared into the operating room, leaving Duane to wrestle with his sorrow.

In the waiting room, Duane’s anxiety soared, haunted by Kayleigh’s words. Every white coat that walked by seemed to carry ominous news. He longed for a glimpse of her, but he remained helpless and alone.

"Family of Kayleigh Myers?" a voice finally called out.

Duane sprang from his seat, frantic, "I’m here!"

The nurse spoke—a mix of calm and procedural—but Duane heard none of it. Only words like "excessive bleeding" and "no guarantees" echoed in his mind. He found himself signing papers, detached from reality, his sole plea: "Please, save her."

The nurse offered a measured nod, leaving Duane to drown in his helplessness.

Time warped, each moment stretching interminably until another voice shattered his despair, "Mr. Palmer..."

Dread rooted him to the spot. He braced himself for unbearable news until the nurse’s gentle voice reached him, "Mr. Palmer, congratulations, you have a healthy son."

"And my wife?" he begged, fearing the answer more than he feared life without his son.

A heavy silence lingered, telling everything.
