Chapter 2

After understanding the situation, my mother-in-law quickly said, "Ryan, please don't get agitated. We're the ones who wronged you. I'll call David right now and have him come. Don't hurt Rachel, she's nine months pregnant," she pleaded. Her voice trembled.

Ryan paused, seemingly believing her words.

She pulled out her phone with shaking hands.

The other end of the call was noisy, with faint sounds of a woman crying in the background.

"What's happening? Rachel's been stabbed more than ten times and is barely hanging on. Why aren't you coming?" she said. She believed David would at least listen to her.

Unexpectedly, David let out a light sneer, coldly laughing, "Mom, are you also playing along with her act? I just checked, and Ryan is still back in his hometown," he said. His voice dripped with disdain.

"Tell her to stop acting. If she's really in trouble, get her a doctor quickly. By the way, I've already arranged a burial plot. We can bury her anytime," he continued. His words were filled with disgust.

A soft, fragile female voice came through the phone, "Is Rachel causing trouble again? David, don't be angry. It's normal for her to be jealous and put on an act," she said. Her tone was submissive.

"Maybe you should go comfort her... but, I really want to die. They say being burned alive is the most painful..." I recognized the voice. It was Ashley.

My mother-in-law's face darkened, "If you don't believe me, I'll send you a photo," she said. Her voice was stern.

David was silent for two seconds, presumably looking at the picture.

Yet, he showed no concern, only letting out a helpless sigh, "Wow, Mom. Rachel's really gone all out with this performance," he said.

"Where did she find these extras who look so much like Ryan? The blood looks exactly like real blood," he continued, mockingly.

"Oh my, what a pitiful expression! Mom, you should send her to an acting studio. Don't waste her incredible acting talent!" he said. His sarcasm was cutting.

My mother-in-law was so angry she couldn't speak, opening and closing her mouth several times.

For a moment, my heart felt a deep sorrow. How had I never noticed how terrible David truly was?

The people watching on the rooftop couldn't stand it anymore, each trying to explain the situation.

David remained unconvinced, "Impressive. Did you hire these extras, or have your brilliant acting skills fooled everyone?" he said.

"You're working hard. Keep playing. I'm going to comfort Ashley," he concluded.

A few seconds of silence fell on the rooftop.

I'm not sure which of David's words triggered Ryan, but he suddenly went mad, pushing me down and frantically stabbing my belly with a knife!

Stab after stab!

The sharp blade tore through my skin, a clear and horrifying pain spreading from my belly throughout my body.

I wanted to struggle, but I didn't even have the strength to lift a hand.

Just as I was about to lose consciousness, two police officers suddenly rushed over. Kind neighbors had called the police.

They struggled to wrestle the knife from Ryan's hand and quickly handcuffed him.

But I was losing more and more blood, my eyelids growing heavier.

Before closing my eyes, I heard David's gentle voice through my mother-in-law's phone, which he had forgotten to hang up.

"Ashley, I've wanted to divorce her for a long time, but she takes care of my parents well," he said.

"In my eyes, you're my true wife. She's just a useful baby-making tool," he continued.

"Don't be sad. How could I love a woman who lies constantly? I only love you, who are sincere and kind," he said.

Each of David's words was like a blade piercing my heart.

This time, my heart was not filled with sadness, but with hatred!

When I opened my eyes again, a sharp antiseptic smell invaded my senses.

My mother-in-law, seeing me awake, rushed to my bedside and grabbed my hand, "Rachel, we're sorry. The baby... the baby didn't make it," she said.

I looked at my deflated belly and pulled my hand away, "Mom, I want to be alone," I said.

Seeing my distant attitude, she sighed and left the room.

I took out my phone to distract myself and accidentally came across a live stream clip of David consoling Ashley.

The living room was splashed with gasoline, but David didn't seem to mind.

He knelt on one knee, pulling a large diamond ring from his pocket, looking at Ashley with deep emotion.

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."
