Two Faces, One Marriage

After three years of marriage, Logan appears to be the perfect husband. Yet, he harbors a deceptive habit shared with his identical twin: they frequently swap identities to see who notices. Even their parents cannot distinguish them. The truth surfaces only when the protagonist finds herself on her brother-in-law's lap, seconds away from a betrayal. This mystery story examines the consequences of their life-swapping games and the fragile trust within a marriage built on a lie.

Chapter 2

Babe?

I stared at the face in front of me, the face that was exactly the same as my husband's, and my whole body went cold.

"Babe? You okay in there? Need help?"

Logan's voice came through the door again, and the sound of it snapped me back into my body.

The man in front of me was not my husband. It was Lucas.

I shoved him off and scrambled for cover, but my chest had already fallen free of the unhooked bra, and I could see the way his eyes tracked the motion. Whatever restraint he had been faking, he dropped it right there.

I clapped my hands up over myself, but there was too much to cover with just my palms, and I knew it, and so did he.

Lucas's eyes crawled over me without any shame at all. He ran his tongue over his lip and clamped a big hand across my mouth.

"You don't want my little brother finding out either, do you?"

A woman's reputation is the one thing she cannot claw back. If Logan knew his own brother had seen me like this, had had his hands on me, he would not keep me.

Logan was trying the door handle from the hallway. I lunged past Lucas and turned the lock before he could open it.

"Babe, what's going on? You locked the door on me?"

Logan stood out there, baffled. I forced the words out, stammering.

"I-I'm not dressed yet. Your brother is still out there, right? What if he sees?"

The man I was hiding from was standing right beside me, watching me cover my chest with shaking hands, amused.

Logan bought it.

"Fair enough."

He let go of the handle and walked back toward the living room. Lucas leaned in next to my ear.

"Look at you. Three years married to my brother, and you're telling me you have never once stepped out?"

I am a one-man woman. The thought of cheating had never even crossed my mind. The suggestion that it had made me furious, and I was about to snap at him when I heard Logan's voice again.

"Hey. Have you seen my brother? He just disappeared."

My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.

"I-I haven't seen him."

Logan laughed at himself through the door.

"Right, of course not. You're in the bedroom. Let me go check, I think he got too deep into that last round."

Logan's footsteps moved off toward the front of the apartment. I let out the breath I had been holding.

The second Logan was gone, Lucas dropped any pretense of keeping still. His hand slid down between my legs over the fabric of my pants. I stared at him.

"What are you doing. I am your brother's wife."

He did not care in the slightest. His hand kept moving.

"Weren't you into this just a minute ago? You were teasing me about being worked up. My little brother not keeping you satisfied?"

I looked down at what was straining against the front of his pants and I swallowed, hard. But whatever he was or wasn't, he was still Logan's brother, and I was still Logan's wife, and I was not going to do this.

I shook my head and stepped around him, grabbed my shirt, and got dressed. As soon as my chest was covered again, I saw the look of disappointment cross his face.

"If Logan hadn't called to you through the door just now, you wouldn't have been able to tell us apart either. Would you?"

He waited until I was buttoning my blouse to say it, and then it came out easy, conversational.

"So let me just be him for a night. I'm better at it than he is, I promise."

Lucas did not know how to take no for an answer. Even with my shirt back on, he moved on me again, and I kept backing up until my shoulders hit the closet behind me.

"Lucas, stop. Logan could walk in any second."

He did not stop. He tipped my chin up with two fingers and kissed me on the mouth. I shoved against his chest with everything I had, but he was six-foot-plus and lived at the gym. Up against him, I might as well have been a kid.

"Do I really have to explain what I'm doing? Logan has been telling me about your body for years. Clothes on, I couldn't see what he meant. Now that I can, he wasn't wrong."

The difference in strength was a joke. I might as well have been tickling him. His tongue pushed past my teeth, and when I tried to bite, he caught both my wrists in one hand and pinned them over my head against the closet.

"Body this good, and you waste it on my little brother? I heard the two of you on your wedding night. Heard you cried. All that sweetness is still in you. I love it."

With my arms pinned up, my chest pushed out into him, and he felt how soft I was through the blouse. His free hand dragged across the shape of me, back and forth, squeezing.

I tried to turn my face away. Some small sound slipped out, and when he finally pulled back to let me breathe, I realized my legs were shaking.

"Bella Sutton, you live up to the title. Your body is ridiculous, and your mouth… Simply delicious."

He was looking at me like a man about to do whatever he felt like doing.

"I'll find out what the mouth can do next time."
