Chapter 5

"I don't understand," I said, sliding the printed grade report across the oak table.

Ethan didn't look up from his neatly organized notebook. He continued balancing a complex chemical equation, his pencil moving in sharp, precise strokes across the page.

"You have an eighty-one percent, Ethan," I said, tapping my pen against the report. "That is a solid B-minus. You are nowhere near failing. Why are you even in the same intervention program as the others?"

He stopped writing. He set his pencil down, picked up the grade report, and pushed it right back to my side of the table.

"Stanford wants an A," he said.

His voice was flat. No arrogance. No defensiveness. Just certainty.

I stared at him. "You volunteered for mandatory academic mentoring because an eighty-one offends you?"

"Stanford will see the grade," Ethan replied, opening his textbook to the next chapter. "Director Sullivan said the program had room, and I intend to finish AP Chemistry with an A. Now, do you want to review covalent bonds, or do you want to keep discussing my GPA?"

I blinked, slightly taken aback by his blunt efficiency.

Compared with the others, Ethan was almost unnervingly disciplined. Cam constantly tried to flirt his way out of assignments, turning every study session into a negotiation. Jace was always exhausted, fighting a losing battle against his father's impossible athletic expectations. Noah just stared at me with that intense, hostile silence that made my skin crawl.

But Ethan? Ethan just did the work.

There was no drama. There was no small talk. We spent our library hours running through flashcards, drilling formulas, and checking answers. He didn't complain, and he never wasted my time. For three years, studying with Tyler had meant doing the work for him while he scrolled through his phone. Ethan actually wanted to learn the material.

As we moved through the chemistry review, a quiet sense of relief settled over me. I decided right then that Ethan Cole was the safest guy on my roster. He was a straightforward problem with a straightforward solution.

That illusion of safety shattered three nights later.

I had agreed to meet Ethan after his late evening baseball practice to review organic compounds before his Friday quiz. I sat on the long wooden bench in the home dugout, my binder resting on my knees.

The rhythmic, sharp crack of aluminum bats hitting baseballs echoed across the empty field under the bright stadium lights. The evening air was cool, carrying the faint smell of fresh dirt and cut grass.

I opened my notebook, intending to write out a practice quiz, but the exhaustion of the week caught up with me. Managing four athletes, keeping up with my own AP classes, and actively ignoring Tyler’s escalating attempts to contact me had drained my energy.

I rested my head against the cold concrete wall behind the bench. Just for a minute, I told myself. Just until practice ends.

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, the world was dark.

The stadium lights were off. The field was a sea of black, illuminated only by the faint glow of the streetlamps from the distant parking lot.

I jerked upright, my heart hammering against my ribs. My binder slid off my lap, hitting the dirt floor with a loud slap.

"Careful," a quiet voice said.

I spun around.

Ethan was sitting right next to me on the wooden bench.

He was still in his dirt-stained baseball pants and a gray practice shirt. His equipment bag rested at his feet. He wasn't looking at his phone. He wasn't reading a textbook. He was just sitting in the dark, watching me.

I reached up to rub the sleep from my eyes, and my fingers brushed against stiff canvas.

There was a baseball cap on my head. A worn, navy-blue cap with the school's athletic logo stitched on the front.

"What time is it?" I asked, my voice raspy and confused. I pulled my phone from my pocket. The screen flared brightly in the dark dugout. "It's almost ten. Did I miss the session?"

"Practice ended an hour and a half ago," Ethan said evenly.

I stared at him, thrown. "Why didn't you wake me up? Or just go home? You've been sitting in the dark for over an hour?"

Ethan didn't move. His expression was as calm and unreadable as ever, but his eyes were focused on my face. The usual distance between us felt gone.

"You stayed for me," he said softly. "I can stay for you."

The quiet intensity in his voice made my chest tighten. I didn't know how to respond to that. Tyler had never waited for me. If I fell asleep, Tyler would have just gone home and complained the next day that I hadn't helped him study.

Ethan reached out. His fingers brushed lightly against the side of my head as he adjusted the brim of the cap.

"Keep it," he murmured, his hand dropping back to his side. "It's my lucky cap."

I sat frozen on the bench, very aware that Ethan Cole wasn't nearly as safe as I had thought.

The next afternoon, Westbridge Ice Arena was freezing.

I walked through the double doors, pulling my jacket tighter around my shoulders. I was looking for Noah Reed. He had skipped his morning check-in, and his English essay was due in exactly four hours.

I still had Ethan's navy-blue baseball cap pulled down over my hair. I had tossed it on this morning out of pure convenience, forgetting the unspoken, highly territorial rules of high school athletes.

Noah was on the ice. He wore his black hockey jacket and pads, aggressively shooting pucks into an empty net. The sound of the hard rubber hitting the fiberglass boards echoed loudly through the empty arena.

He skated backward, setting up for another shot, when he noticed me standing by the penalty box.

He stopped abruptly.

His gaze didn't look at my face. They locked onto the navy-blue canvas on my head.

Noah dropped his stick. It clattered sharply against the ice. He skated directly toward me, his large frame moving with terrifying speed before he stopped right at the edge of the barrier.

The temperature around him felt ten degrees colder than the rest of the room.

"Whose is that?" Noah demanded. His voice was low, carrying that same dangerous, hostile edge he always used when dealing with Tyler.

"It's just a hat, Noah," I said, holding up my clipboard to maintain some professional distance. "We need to talk about your English paper. You missed our morning meeting."

He didn't look at the clipboard. He didn't care about the essay.

Noah reached right over the fiberglass barrier. Before I could even step back, his large, gloved hands gripped the brim of the baseball cap and pulled it straight off my head.

"Hey!" I protested, reaching up to grab it back. "Give that back."

Noah held the navy cap out of my reach. He stared at it for a second, his jaw clenching tightly. Then, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his own thick, black Westbridge hockey beanie.

He leaned over the barrier and shoved the black beanie firmly onto my head, pulling it down over my ears.

"This looks better," Noah stated, his voice hard and uncompromising.

"I didn't ask for a wardrobe change," I snapped, pushing the edge of the beanie up so I could actually see him. "Give me the cap back."

"No."

Before I could argue, the glass doors at the far end of the rink swung open.

Footsteps echoed loudly on the rubber floor mats.

I turned my head.

Ethan was standing in the doorway. He had his baseball bag slung over his shoulder, clearly coming straight from the batting cages.

He stopped walking.

Ethan's eyes darted from the black hockey beanie sitting on my head, directly to his own lucky navy cap currently crushed in Noah's gloved fist.

The freezing arena went silent.

Noah didn't drop the cap. He didn't look away or offer an excuse. He just stared right back at Ethan, his posture radiating open defiance.

Ethan let his baseball bag slide off his shoulder. It hit the rubber mat with a thud.

His voice stayed level, which somehow made it worse.

"Give me my hat, Reed."

Noah looked at the navy cap in his fist, then at Ethan. He did not move.

"Come get it."

Neither of them looked at me.

For three years, I had managed one boy's life by keeping every problem neat, labeled, and under control. Now two captains were squared off across a sheet of ice over something that belonged to me only in the sense that I had worn it.

And both of them looked ready to forget that distinction.
