Chapter 1

"Since you think I'm so unreasonable, Ethan, we should just break up."

Chloe Mercer crossed her arms. Her chin tilted upward. She wore that familiar, expectant smirk. For eight years, this was her favorite weapon. She would drop the threat, and I would scramble to pick up the pieces. I would apologize. I would buy the gift. I would beg.

Not today.

The coffee shop felt freezing. The chill seeped right into my bones, mingling with the bitter aroma of roasted espresso.

"Well?" she snapped, tapping her manicured nails against the ceramic mug. "Are you going to sit there like an idiot, or are you going to apologize?"

I looked at her face. The features I once found beautiful now just looked sharp. Mean. The constant walking on eggshells, the endless mind games, the exhaustion—it all crashed down on me at once.

Something in my chest finally let go.

"Okay," I said.

Her tapping stopped instantly. "Excuse me?"

"Okay," I repeated, my voice completely flat. "As you wish, Chloe. Let's break up. We're thoroughly done."

Chloe's arms dropped to her sides. The smirk vanished, replaced by a pale, rigid shock. "You're seriously ending it over this?"

"I'm not throwing a tantrum. I'm agreeing with you," I said, standing up. I pulled a twenty-dollar bill from my wallet and dropped it on the table. "You wanted to end it. It's ended."

"Ethan Hale, if you walk out that door, do not expect me to answer your calls tomorrow!"

"I won't be calling."

I turned my back and walked out. I didn't look over my shoulder. Pushing through the glass doors, the harsh autumn wind hit my face, slicing right through my collar.

It felt fantastic.

The cold air hit my face and for the first time in years I could actually breathe.

The silence of my apartment a week later carried a different kind of weight, heavy with the realization of how much time I had wasted.

A sharp knock broke the quiet.

I opened the door to find Grace Linwood holding a large paper bag smelling of garlic and roasted chicken.

"You look terrible, Ethan," she said, pushing past me into the kitchen.

"Hello to you too, Grace."

She set the food on the counter. "Your mother called me. Linda is convinced you're starving to death in here."

"My mother worries too much."

"She has a right to," Grace shot back, unpacking cartons. "She survived a heart valve replacement. She doesn't need the stress of a brooding son."

I leaned against the doorframe, watching her. Grace. She had always been there. When Linda was in the ICU, Chloe had complained about the hospital smell and left to get her nails done. Grace had slept in the waiting room chair for three days straight.

"Sit," she ordered. "Eat."

I pulled up a stool. "You didn't have to come."

"Someone had to make sure the heir to the Hale Group hasn't completely lost his mind."

"The company is doing great," I said, picking up a fork. "Thanks to you."

Grace waved a hand dismissively. "My family had the funds. It made business sense to help your dad out during the liquidity crisis last year."

"Robert doesn't see it as just business," I said. "My father thinks very highly of you."

"Robert is a smart man." She offered a small smile, but it didn't reach her eyes.

I set the fork down. "Why did you do it, Grace? All of it. The hospital, the company, putting up with Chloe glaring at you at every gala for eight years."

She froze. Her fingers tightened on the edge of the granite counter. "We've been friends since we were kids, Ethan."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting right now." She avoided my gaze, staring intensely at the takeout bags.

I reached out and covered her hand with mine. She flinched, a tiny jolt of surprise, but didn't pull away.

"I was blind," I said softly. "I spent eight years looking past the one person who was actually there."

Grace finally looked at me. Her eyes were bright, defensive. "I'm not a rebound, Ethan. I won't be a backup plan."

"You were never a backup plan," I told her, my voice firm. "I just didn't see it until it was almost too late."

A tear slipped down her cheek, completely at odds with her stern expression. She wiped it away furiously. "You're an idiot."

"I know."

"Sit down and eat something."

The shift from friends to something more happened without a single moment of hesitation. There were no games. No jealousy. Just an overwhelming sense of peace.

Six months later, the Hale estate was unrecognizable, transformed by thousands of white roses.

My father, Robert, adjusted my bowtie in the mirror.

"I always hoped I'd see this day," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I just didn't think it would take you nearly a decade to figure it out."

"I had to learn the hard way, Dad."

Linda walked into the dressing room, wiping her eyes with a lace tissue. "She looks beautiful, Ethan. Grace is the daughter I always wanted. Finally, some actual warmth in this family."

"Don't cry, Mom. You'll ruin your makeup."

"These are happy tears," she scolded, swatting my arm. "Now get out there."

Standing at the altar, watching Grace walk down the aisle, the last lingering scars of my past dissolved. She didn't demand attention. She didn't need to control the room. She just smiled at me, a steady, unwavering force.

"You ready for this?" I whispered as she took my hands.

"I've been ready since I was sixteen," she whispered back.

The honeymoon phase bled into a quiet, perfect domesticity.

I walked into our bedroom on a Tuesday evening, loosening my tie after a long board meeting.

Grace was sitting on the edge of the mattress, staring at a small plastic stick in her hands.

"Everything okay?" I asked, tossing my jacket onto a chair.

She didn't answer. She just held out the stick.

I stepped closer and took it from her. Two pink lines.

The room seemed to tilt slightly. I looked from the test to her face.

"Are you serious?" I asked.

Grace nodded, a massive grin breaking across her face. "We're having a baby, Ethan."

I went to my knees, rested my forehead against her stomach, and laughed—quiet, almost disbelieving. "A baby. My god, Grace."

"Your mother is going to lose her mind," she laughed, running her fingers through my hair.

"Robert is going to buy a pony by tomorrow morning," I said, looking up at her. "I love you."

"I love you too."

The joy radiating through the house that night was absolute. We called my parents. Linda screamed into the phone. Robert popped a bottle of champagne we could hear fizzing through the speaker.

Everything was perfect.

Then, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

I picked it up, expecting another congratulatory text from a relative.

It was an unknown number.

Attached was a photo. It was a picture of Grace and me, taken through the window of our dining room, just ten minutes ago.

Below the image was a single line of text.

*Did you really think I would let you throw me away and keep all the happiness for yourself?*

I stared at the screen until the words blurred. My first instinct was to call the number. Then I stopped. Whoever sent it already knew where we lived, what we looked like in our own home, and exactly when we were happiest.

Calling would only tell them they had gotten under my skin.

I deleted the message, set the phone face-down on the nightstand, and turned back to Grace. She was still smiling at the pregnancy test, completely unaware.

I forced myself to smile back.

Two weeks later, that smile was gone.
