Too Late, Mafia Don: I Am Free

For three years, she gave her nights and her future to Domenico, the mafia syndicate's most feared heir, crafting the legitimate empire that would seat him as Don. Then a flight confirmation appeared on his phone: two first-class tickets to a Sicily summit—for him and Lyla, the woman working to ruin her. When confronted, Domenico offered no explanation, only a cold ultimatum: apologize to Lyla and know her place, or become nothing to the Family. His soldiers waited for her to beg. Instead, she walked to the shredder and fed every page of his commercial blueprint into the blades. The betrothal is dead. She owes them not a single word.

Chapter 2

Sienna POV

The silence in my life was a strange, beautiful thing. It had a texture and a weight all its own.

The days of having to press every crease out of his morning shirts, of waking to the sound of a gun slide being racked in the next room, were finally over.

I felt an unprecedented sense of freedom.

The pressure of the Family, a constant hand at the base of my neck, was gone.

When Domenico returned from Sicily on a Monday, the shift in the academy's atmosphere was palpable.

He moved down the central aisle with his familiar arrogant stride, his polished shoes making sharp, deliberate clicks on the stone floor. He stopped directly in front of my desk.

He tossed a small, velvet-wrapped box onto my open notebook.

It landed with a soft thud, the lid springing open to reveal a diamond bracelet that threw fractured light across the page.

He looked down at me as a king might toss a coin to a beggar who had finally learned the art of groveling.

Without looking up at him, I picked up the box and slid it right back across the scratched mahogany of the desk.

"I don't want your money, Domenico," I said, my voice flat. "And our betrothal is broken."

A darkness moved behind Domenico's eyes, the gathering of a storm in his obsidian gaze.

His pride, a fragile and colossal thing, could not bear the weight of a public rejection.

Lyla quickly stepped up beside him, a soft, placating smile fixed on her face.

"He missed you in Sicily, Sienna," she cooed, her tone dripping with a sweetness so false it was acidic. "He spent hours picking out the perfect gift."

My eyes traveled up the length of Lyla's frame, from her designer shoes to her perfectly coiffed hair.

"Did you help him pick it out," I asked, arching a single brow, "after you two finished with the photographs at the villa?"

A tide of deep, humiliated red washed over Lyla's face, her mask of innocence cracking for a fraction of a second.

Domenico's palm struck the desk, a sound like a pistol shot that made the surrounding classmates flinch in their seats.

He shoved the velvet box back toward me, his knuckles grazing my hand.

"Behind the academy. After the final bell," he issued the direct, cold order, his voice a low threat. "Do not test me."

He turned and walked away before I could respond.

When the final bell rang, I packed my bag with a deliberate, unhurried slowness.

I bypassed the rear exit that led to our old meeting spot, walked straight out the great front gates of the academy, and went home.

Once inside my room, I pulled out my phone. I ejected the small SIM card that had for years been my digital leash to the syndicate, and with a deliberate pinch of my fingers, snapped the tiny piece of plastic in half. The sound was no louder than a pinprick, but it echoed in the quiet room—a physical confirmation of my liberation. I had severed the last thread.

The consequences of my absence materialized two weeks later, when the results of the crucial midterm board evaluations were posted on the main hall bulletin.

I stood in front of the board, finding my name at the very top of the list.

I ranked first in the entire academy.

I scanned down the list, far past the top hundred, until I found Domenico's name sitting dangerously close to the bottom.

This particular failure would be seen not as a scholastic lapse, but as a weakness before the Capos.

He could bribe administrators and threaten professors, but he could not purchase the intellectual legitimacy the Family needed to launder its reputation. That was why he had needed me—and why, without me, his facade was crumbling into dust.

A particular cadence of leather on linoleum echoed down the hallway, parting the sea of students.

Domenico stormed over, his face pale with fury.

He seized my shoulder and spun me around, his grip a hot, bruising pressure.

"This was your design," he accused, his chest heaving. "You are sabotaging my standing to punish me."

"You will come to my estate tonight," he demanded, his body a wall in front of me. "You will resume my tutoring."

I lifted his hand from my shoulder and brushed at the fabric of my jacket as if he had left some residue there.

"Tell me, Domenico," I asked calmly, my eyes meeting his furious stare. "Does the future Don of the Cosa Nostra require a governess to ensure he completes his homework?"

A collective gasp echoed from the students lingering in the hall.

Lyla appeared from the crowd, her eyes wide with manufactured distress.

She grabbed my sleeve, begging, "Sienna, please! The syndicate's stability is at stake. You must help him."

I pulled my arm from her grasp, repulsed by her theatrics.

"Since you are so eager to be the Don's woman, Lyla," I said, my voice carrying clearly down the quiet corridor, "you may have the privilege of tutoring him yourself."

I turned my back on both of them.

I walked down the corridor, feeling the weight lift from my shoulders, my head held high, breathing air that for the first time felt entirely my own.

Behind me, Domenico let out a low, dangerous growl that vibrated against the steel lockers.
