Chapter 2

Alaina’s beat-up Honda Civic hydroplaned on the slick freeway, and for one wild, reckless moment, she didn’t correct the wheel.

The tires caught. The car straightened. She kept driving.

Tears she refused to acknowledge blurred her vision, mixing with the rainwater still dripping from her hair. The ghost of Ashley’s perfume clung to her nostrils, a cloying reminder of everything she would never be.

She was nine years old again, cornered in the schoolyard by older boys who knocked her books to the ground and pulled her hair. And then *he* was there—a teenage Derrick, all long limbs and righteous fury, placing himself between her and her tormentors like a shield. She had looked up at him that day and given him her heart without even knowing it.

*Stupid,* she thought savagely. *Stupid, stupid girl.*

Her phone buzzed in the cup holder. A text from Cori Harmon, Derrick’s niece and Alaina’s reluctant stepsister.

**Eclipse tonight. Don’t be lame.**

Alaina’s first instinct was to ignore it. Cori had spent years making her feel like a parasite, an unwanted charity case living off the Harmon name. Every family dinner, every holiday gathering, Cori’s eyes had followed her with the same unspoken message: *You don’t belong here.*

But the alternative was sitting alone in her small off-campus apartment near Stanford, drowning in silence and the memory of Derrick’s silk robe. Right now, she craved noise. She craved the burn of alcohol. Anything to numb the gaping wound in her chest.

She typed back a single word. **Fine.**

Hours later, the bass at Eclipse vibrated through the soles of her feet.

The club was a chaotic sea of flashing lights and sweaty bodies. Music pounded through her skull like a second heartbeat. It was perfect. She found a spot at the bar and ordered a whiskey, neat. Then another.

*This is what you wanted,* she told herself. *To feel nothing.*

“Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in.”

Alaina didn’t bother turning around. She recognized Cori’s voice—and the venom in it.

Cori arrived with her usual entourage. Blair Kensington, a blonde with a perpetually bored expression, and Victoria Sinclair, whose family money was old enough to make even the Harmons look like newcomers. Their designer dresses and perfect hair were a stark contrast to Alaina’s simple black slip.

Cori’s eyes swept over her with theatrical disdain. “Isn’t it the Harmon family’s dirty little secret? What’s the matter? Did Uncle Derrick finally kick you out for good?”

Alaina took a slow swallow of whiskey, letting the burn anchor her. In the mirror behind the bar, she met Cori’s smug gaze. “Are you done? Or is there more?”

Cori’s smile faltered.

Blair giggled, putting a manicured hand to her mouth. “Be nice, Cori. She’s a Stanford genius now, remember? Maybe Derrick’s planning to leave the whole company to her.”

“Oh, I don’t think so,” Victoria chimed in, leaning forward with theatrical conspiracy. “Not with what I heard. Uncle Derrick is about to get engaged.”

The words were a lightning strike.

Alaina’s hand tightened on her glass. The low hum of anxiety that had been her constant companion all night spiked into a piercing shriek. She forced herself to look at Cori, her voice a low rasp. “What are you talking about?”

Cori’s smile returned, triumphant and predatory. “You mean you don’t know? The model. Ashley Vance. It was practically the first thing he did after you left tonight. The whole Bel Air gossip mill is buzzing.” She leaned in close, her voice a venomous whisper. “You’re the last to know. How pathetic is that?”

*Engaged.*

The word was a death sentence. It was worse than seeing Ashley in his robe, worse than his casual dismissal. It slammed the door on a fantasy she hadn’t even realized she was still clinging to.

Cori saw the blood drain from her face and pressed her advantage. “You didn’t really think he’d ever want you, did you? Don’t you remember what everyone used to say? The little orphan girl, trying to seduce her own guardian. So shameless.”

The old rumors. The poison that had tainted her teenage years, whispered in hallways and behind cupped hands. Rusty knives Cori was now twisting in old wounds.

Alaina’s lungs seized. The flashing lights of the club blurred, the edges of her vision turning dark. She felt stripped bare, her most private, painful secret exposed under the harsh strobe lights.

But this time, she refused to break.

Slowly, deliberately, Alaina set down her glass. The sound of crystal meeting wood cut through the pounding bass. She rose from her barstool, drawing herself up to her full height, and met Cori’s gaze with a calm so absolute it was unnerving.

“Cori,” she said, her voice soft and clear, “do you know why you hate me so much?”

Cori blinked, thrown off balance. “Excuse me?”

“It’s because no matter how many parties you throw, no matter how many designer dresses you buy, you will never, ever be half as important to Derrick as I am.” Alaina’s smile was a blade. “I’m the one he saved. The one he protected. You’re just... his brother’s daughter. An afterthought.”

The color drained from Cori’s face. “How dare you—”

“And another thing,” Alaina continued, her voice dropping to a whisper that only Cori could hear. “If I’m so pathetic, why do you spend so much time obsessing over me? It’s almost like... you’re threatened.”

Cori’s hand lashed out.

The slap never landed.

A hand shot out of the shadows and caught Cori’s wrist in mid-air, the grip so tight that Cori gasped in pain.

“That’s enough.”

The voice was low, calm, and cut through the club noise with surgical precision. It carried the kind of authority that made people instinctively straighten their spines and shut their mouths.

Alaina’s blurred vision swam upward, tracing a path along a perfectly tailored charcoal suit to a strong jawline and a face she knew but had never expected to see here. A face that was both familiar and impossibly distant.

Julian Rhodes IV.

He didn’t look at Cori. His dark eyes—cold, unreadable, and utterly focused—were fixed on Alaina’s face, taking in her pale cheeks, her trembling hands, the too-bright lipstick that couldn’t quite hide her devastation.

Without a word, he released Cori’s wrist with a flick of disdain, as if touching her had been beneath him. Then he shrugged off his blazer—heavy dark wool, impossibly soft—and draped it over Alaina’s shoulders.

The warmth of his body still clung to the fabric. The scent of him—clean, expensive, a subtle mix of cedar and something faintly metallic—cut through the club’s stale miasma. The weight of the jacket was grounding. A shield.

Only then did Julian turn his cool, measured gaze to Cori. His voice was quiet, yet it silenced the entire VIP section.

“I wasn’t aware the Harmons made a habit of letting their family be publicly humiliated.”

He used the words *their family* and *publicly humiliated* like surgical instruments—simultaneously including Alaina as one of them while indicting Cori for failing to protect her.

Cori’s face flushed a blotchy red. “Julian. This is family business.”

A humorless smile touched Julian’s lips. “Alaina is my cousin. Which makes this my business now.”

He reached down and took Alaina’s wrist—gently, but with an authority that brooked no argument. Her skin was ice-cold to his touch, and his brow tightened almost imperceptibly. He pulled her to her feet and tucked her against his side in a gesture of unmistakable possession.

Just then, a man with slicked-back hair and a roguish grin sauntered over. Lance Beaumont. Alaina recognized him from the society pages—inherited fortune, revolving door of girlfriends, and a reputation for treating women like disposable accessories.

“Julian, my man. Not going to introduce me to your beautiful friend?” Lance’s eyes roamed over Alaina with predatory interest.

Julian’s expression turned to ice. He shifted his body, blocking Lance’s view of Alaina completely. His voice dropped, losing all pretense of civility.

“She’s not for you, Lance.”

Lance blinked, taken aback by the venom. He held up his hands in surrender. “Hey, alright. Just asking.” He retreated into the crowd.

Julian guided Alaina toward a secluded booth in a quieter corner, his hand a firm pressure on the small of her back. From across the room, his younger sister Jasmine watched the entire exchange over the rim of her cranberry juice, her expression thoughtful.

Once they were seated, Julian ordered a bottle of water and a warm towel with a few low words to the waitress. He placed the glass in front of Alaina.

“Drink. You’ve had enough whiskey.”

Her fingers were still trembling. She kept her head down, letting her hair fall forward to hide her face. She felt raw, exposed, and deeply ashamed that he had seen her like this. The brilliant, intimidating heir to the Rhodes empire—the distant East Coast cousin who had always seemed to be judging her from afar.

He was everything she wasn’t. Powerful. Confident. Born into a world of unimaginable privilege.

And tonight, he was the only person who had stepped out of the shadows to help her.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

Julian didn’t respond. He simply sat across from her, watching. Waiting. The silence wasn’t awkward—it was expectant, like the calm before a storm.

Finally, he spoke.

“You’re done letting them walk all over you.”

It wasn’t a question.

Alaina looked up, startled. “What?”

“The Harmons. Derrick. Cori. All of them.” Julian leaned forward, his dark eyes holding hers with an intensity that made it impossible to look away. “You’ve spent ten years being their doormat. Their charity case. Their dirty little secret.”

Each word was a hammer blow, precise and devastating.

“That ends tonight.”

Alaina’s throat tightened. “You don’t know anything about my life.”

“I know more than you think.” He leaned back, his expression unreadable. “I know you’re a semester away from graduating Stanford with honors. I know you’ve been offered a research position that could put you on the cover of *Nature* within five years. And I know you were about to throw it all away because Derrick Harmon doesn’t know how to love anyone but himself.”

She stared at him, her heart pounding. “How do you know about the research position?”

Julian’s smile was faint, enigmatic. “I make it my business to know things that matter.”

He reached into his jacket—the jacket she was still wearing—and pulled out a sleek black business card. He slid it across the table toward her.

“Rhodes Industries has a biotech division. Cutting-edge research. Unlimited funding. No Harmons in sight.” His eyes locked onto hers. “When you’re ready to stop being their victim and start being who you were meant to be... call me.”

Alaina stared at the card. The embossed letters seemed to glow under the club’s dim lights.

*Julian Rhodes IV*

*CEO, Rhodes Industries*

When she looked up again, he was already standing.

“My driver will take you home,” he said. “And Alaina?”

She swallowed. “Yes?”

His gaze darkened, and for a moment, the mask of the cold, controlled heir slipped, revealing something far more dangerous beneath. Something that looked almost like hunger.

“Next time someone tries to hurt you,” he said quietly, “you call me. Not Derrick. Me. Understood?”

She nodded, not trusting her voice.

He held her gaze for one heartbeat longer, then turned and walked away, disappearing into the crowd like a shadow.

Alaina sat motionless in the booth, Julian’s blazer still wrapped around her shoulders, his card burning a hole in her palm. The scent of cedar and something metallic lingered in the air around her.

For the first time in ten years, she felt something other than pain.

She felt the faint, terrifying stirring of hope.

In the car on the way home, her phone buzzed. A notification from a gossip app she hadn’t opened in months.

**BREAKING: Harmon Heir Derrick Harmon Engaged to Supermodel Ashley Vance—Insider Sources Confirm Proposal Happened Hours Ago.**

Below the headline was a grainy photo of Derrick and Ashley, taken through a restaurant window. Ashley was beaming, holding up her left hand. A diamond glittered on her ring finger.

Alaina stared at the image until her screen went dark.

Then she pulled out Julian’s card and dialed the number before she could lose her nerve.

It rang once.

“I knew you’d call sooner than I expected.”

His voice was dark velvet, utterly unsurprised. As if he’d been waiting.

Alaina closed her eyes. “Your offer. The biotech division. Is it still open?”

A pause. Then: “It was never closed. I’ll have the papers drawn up tomorrow.”

The line went dead.

Alaina opened her eyes and looked out the car window at the rain-soaked streets of Los Angeles. The city of angels. The city that had broken her heart a thousand times.

She was done bleeding for people who didn’t care if she lived or died.

It was time to become someone else.
