Too Late For Regret: The Surgeon's Escape

Dr. Kayli Byrd's ER shift takes a devastating turn when a car crash victim arrives—her husband, Brody, with his mistress, Carly, and Kayli's son, Leo. Brody treats Kayli like staff, demanding care for Carly's scratch, while Leo clings to Carly, rejecting his own mother. At the courthouse, Brody flaunts his new family, expecting Kayli to break. After five years of sacrificing her surgical career as his invisible wife, she realizes she was just a placeholder. Instead of crumbling, Kayli calmly hands the mediator her terms: she waives custody of Leo and demands twenty million dollars to disappear. Before Brody can react, she blocks him, packs a single suitcase, and boards a one-way flight to Europe to start over.

Chapter 2

Kayli stood in the hallway for a moment, letting the sterile quiet of the alcove settle her racing heart into a slow, steady beat. She adjusted her mask, took a deep breath that tasted of antiseptic, and walked back to the nurses' station.

Her shift didn't end for another hour.

She spent that hour completing her charts with meticulous precision. She checked on her other patients, her voice calm, her hands steady. When colleagues offered a concerned look or a quiet, "You okay?" she met their eyes and gave a small, practiced nod.

"Thanks. I'm fine."

The lie was a familiar weight on her tongue.

Finally, at 3 a. m. , she signed out. She walked out of the hospital doors, not towards the parking garage where her sensible sedan was parked, but to the street. The night air was cool and damp, a welcome shock to her system.

She didn't go home.

Instead, she drove her car to a sleek, modern high-rise in the city center. An apartment she'd bought with money from her own family, before she'd ever met Brody. A place he knew nothing about.

Her sanctuary.

The apartment was cool and silent. She walked through the empty rooms, turning on every single light. The stark white walls and minimalist furniture felt clean, untouched by the mess her life had become. It was cold, but it was hers.

She pulled out her phone and dialed her best friend.

Chloe Sterling answered on the second ring, her voice sharp and awake even at this hour. "Kayli? What's wrong?"

"He was in the ER tonight," Kayli said, her voice flat. "With her. And Leo."

There was a three-second silence on the other end of the line. Then, Chloe's voice, low and furious. "That bastard." Another pause. "I'm on my way."

Kayli didn't argue. She walked into the bathroom and turned the shower on, as hot as she could stand it. She scrubbed her skin until it was raw, trying to wash away the hospital smell, the scent of betrayal, the feeling of Brody's world clinging to her.

By the time Chloe arrived, Kayli was wrapped in a plush robe, staring out the floor-to-ceiling window at the city lights.

Chloe didn't bother with pleasantries. She was carrying a bottle of expensive red wine and two large, empty suitcases.

"Figured you'd need these," she said, setting the suitcases by the door. She moved to the kitchen, opened the wine, and poured two glasses.

Kayli accepted the glass, her fingers wrapping around the cool stem. For the first time all night, she let the exhaustion show on her face. She recounted the events in the ER, her voice a monotone, detached narrative.

Chloe listened, her expression hardening with every word. When Kayli finished, Chloe let out a string of curses that would have made a sailor blush.

"Are you sure about walking away with nothing?" Chloe asked, her tone shifting to pragmatic. "The Bonner fortune is massive. You're entitled to half, Kayli."

Kayli shook her head, a single, decisive movement. The city lights reflected in her gray-blue eyes, making them look like chips of stone.

"I don't want his money, Chloe. I want to be free of him." She tucked a stray piece of damp hair behind her ear, a habit she had when her mind was made up. "Money is just a tool to sever the ties quickly. I want it to be clean. Final."

An hour later, they were in Chloe's car, driving towards the sprawling, sterile mansion in the suburbs that Kayli had once called home.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Foster, opened the door, her face a mixture of surprise and concern.

"Mrs. Bonner! I wasn't expecting you. Mr. Bonner called. He won't be home tonight. He's staying at the hospital... with Miss Strickland."

The words, meant to be an explanation, were just another confirmation. They didn't even sting anymore.

"I know," Kayli said calmly. "I'm just here to pick up a few things."

She walked past the housekeeper and went straight upstairs, Chloe following silently behind her. She bypassed the master bedroom, a room that had felt cold for years, and went directly to the cavernous walk-in closet.

She ignored the racks of designer dresses, the shelves of handbags, the velvet-lined drawers of jewelry Brody had bought her. They were costumes for a role she no longer wanted to play.

She pulled out one of the suitcases and began to pack. A few pairs of scrubs. Her favorite jeans. The worn-out sweater she loved. Her medical textbooks and research journals.

From a locked box on her nightstand, she retrieved a small, worn wooden case. It held the few things her mother had left her. It was the only thing in this house that truly mattered.

Chloe worked beside her, folding clothes with a quiet efficiency. In less than twenty minutes, they were done.

Kayli walked into Brody's study. She spun the combination on the safe hidden behind a painting and pulled out a thick manila envelope. She'd had her lawyer draw up the papers months ago, a contingency plan she'd prayed she would never need.

Downstairs, she walked to the living room. The vast space was decorated in shades of gray and chrome, a testament to Brody's taste. It was as impersonal as a hotel lobby.

She took the divorce agreement from the envelope.

She placed it squarely in the middle of the glass coffee table.

She picked up the heavy, crystal ashtray from the side table-one Brody used for his celebratory cigars-and set it on top of the papers. A final, deliberate act. It would not be missed.

She took one last look around the house. Five years. It felt like a lifetime spent in someone else's skin. There was no nostalgia. No regret. Only the quiet hum of release.

"Mrs. Foster," she said, her voice gentle but firm. "I'll be gone for a while. If you need to send any of Leo's things, please contact my lawyer. His information is with the papers."

The housekeeper just nodded, her expression confused. She likely thought this was just another fight.

Kayli and Chloe walked out the front door, pulling the suitcases behind them. The sound of the wheels on the stone walkway was the only sound in the cold, pre-dawn air.

The next morning, Brody Bonner walked into his silent home. He was exhausted. Carly had been demanding and tearful, and his arm throbbed under the temporary splint.

He noticed Kayli's car was gone. He scowled. She'd probably gone to the hospital early, sulking. It annoyed him that she wasn't here to fuss over him, to get him some painkillers.

He tossed his keys onto the console table and walked into the living room, loosening his tie. He was about to pour himself a whiskey when his eyes landed on the coffee table.

A manila envelope, held down by his ashtray.

He picked it up, a flicker of irritation crossing his face. More paperwork from one of his charities, probably.

He pulled out the document inside.

His eyes scanned the header.

Divorce Agreement.

His blood ran cold. He flipped through the pages, his movements jerky. Property waivers. Asset declarations.

He turned to the final page.

There, at the bottom, was her signature. Kayli Byrd.

It was written in a clear, steady hand. As if she were signing a prescription, not ending their marriage.
