Too Late For Regret, Mr. Spencer Chapter 1

Lydia Haley systematically cut into the filet mignon on her porcelain plate. The meat was bone-cold, its rich juices congealing against the sterling silver, but she barely felt the chill.

At the head of the forty-foot mahogany table sat Eleanor Spencer, the matriarch of Spencer Global Financial. Eleanor deliberately set down her heavy silver fork and knife. The sharp, metallic clink echoed through the dining room like a gavel falling in a courtroom.

Eleanor's gaze, cold and appraising, swept over Lydia like a auditor inspecting a failing asset.

"Lydia, a family is like a business. Every asset must perform or be liquidated."

Lydia's back stiffened. Her fingers tightened around her own silverware, knuckles turning white.

"Your spending on Fifth Avenue last month exceeded the annual salary of a junior analyst at our firm," Eleanor continued, her voice devoid of warmth. "A woman like you will only drag my son down. I expect you to leave the Spencer family voluntarily."

Lydia lifted her head, the words to defend herself—that the spending was entirely dedicated to financing the Spencer Family Foundation's annual pediatric charity gala—caught in her throat. Eleanor's icy, dismissive stare silenced her before she could utter a word.

She looked across the vast table for help, her eyes pleading with her husband, Blake Spencer, CEO of Spencer Global.

He didn't even look up from his phone. The screen's light danced in his cool blue eyes, as if it were his only world.

Lydia's heart sank into a cold, dark pit. She lowered her head, swallowing the unspoken words.

Silence once again fell over the table, broken only by the whispers of the children.

"Is Mommy upset?" their little daughter, Stella, whispered to her brother. Leo, their seven-year-old son, answered loudly, "She deserves it! It's her fault Aunt Danica can't come for dinner!" The name Danica felt like a physical blow. The room began to spin around Lydia. Danica Richmond. The woman who had abruptly crashed into their lives three years ago. She presented herself as the tragic, refined daughter of a fallen aristocratic family.

Yet, the truth hadn't mattered. Following Blake's near-fatal car accident, Danica had expertly weaponized his resulting memory confusion and survivor's guilt to claw her way into the Spencer family.

Ever since that rainy night three years ago, the loving husband Lydia once knew had vanished, replaced by a man whose every look toward her was filled with a freezing, impenetrable distance.

Blake finally reacted. He frowned slightly, not at Lydia, but at his son.

"Leo, eat quietly."

His tone held no reprimand, more like a quiet approval. Lydia watched him, realizing it was the first time he had looked in this direction all evening, and his gaze passed right over her. He was a statue of indifference, his attention shifting only between his phone and his son. Lydia was invisible.

Trying to reclaim a sliver of her maternal dignity, she spoke softly to Leo, "Leo, you can't have too many sweets at dinner. It's bad for your teeth."

She was referring to the hand he was secretly stretching toward a chocolate mousse.

Leo's face flushed with anger. He shoved his plate away with a screech.

"Don't tell me what to do! You're a bad mom! Aunt Danica bought me ice cream yesterday and said I can eat whatever I want!"

He jumped down from his chair, a small, furious animal. Lydia reached for him, but he violently shook her hand off.

"I hate you!" he screamed, tears welling in his eyes.

As everyone watched, stunned, Leo bolted toward the fireplace at the other end of the room.

On the mantelpiece sat a pair of exquisite crystal swan vases. They were a fifth-anniversary gift from Blake, one of the few objects in this cold house that once held any warmth.

"Don't!" Lydia cried out in horror.

But Leo's small hands were already pushing them.

A sharp, shattering sound echoed through the dining room, like something breaking for good.

The crystal fragments glittered on the expensive rug, just like the pieces of Lydia's heart. Her body went cold, the last of her strength draining away.

Eleanor clicked her tongue in annoyance, complaining about the cost of the rug.

Blake finally put down his phone. He stood, his tall frame casting a heavy shadow. A faint, desperate hope flickered in Lydia. Would he comfort her? Even just a word.

But he walked straight past her, past the glittering debris, to his crying son. He knelt, wiping Leo's tears with a handkerchief, his voice softer than she had ever heard it.

"Alright, big boys don't cry."

He never once looked at Lydia. Not at the broken swans.

He stood up and spoke to the butler standing nearby, his voice cold and commanding.

"Clean this up. And inform the kitchen to prepare a chocolate mousse for Leo at dinner from now on."

With that, he took Leo's hand and walked out of the dining room without a backward glance.

Lydia was left standing alone in the wreckage. The brilliant crystal chandelier above her cast a cold, unforgiving light, offering no warmth, only an endless, bone-deep chill.
