Chapter 3

The world swam back into focus with the sterile smell of antiseptic. Emilia found herself on a narrow, hard bed in a room painted a dull, lifeless white. An IV line was taped to the back of her hand, a clear fluid dripping slowly into her veins.

A doctor with a tired, impassive face entered the room. He didn't make eye contact.

"The fetus is still viable," he said, his voice flat, as if he were reading a weather report. "But the situation is extremely precarious. You're to remain on complete bed rest."

He left as quietly as he had entered. Fetus. The word was so clinical, so detached. It wasn't a baby. It wasn't her child. It was a medical condition.

Her eyes scanned the room and landed on him. Knox was sitting in a leather armchair in the corner, as if he owned the place. He was calmly dabbing at the bite mark on his hand with an antiseptic wipe. The scratch on his cheek was a stark, angry red against his pale skin.

The sight of him made her recoil, a full-body flinch. She tried to press herself into the mattress, to become smaller, to disappear.

He finished cleaning his hand, tossed the wipe into a bin with a flick of his wrist, and rose to his feet. He walked to her bedside and stood over her, his shadow falling across the bed. He looked down at her not as a person, but as a problem to be managed.

Without a word, he tossed a tablet onto the bed beside her. The screen lit up, playing a news report.

The video showed her parents, their faces etched with confusion and fear, being swarmed by reporters outside their small suburban home. They looked old and frail. The headline at the bottom of the screen read: "FATHER OF ACCUSED KILLER UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CORPORATE FRAUD."

A cold fist clenched around Emilia's heart, squeezing the air from her lungs. This was his doing. She knew it with absolute certainty.

"Leave them alone," she rasped, her throat raw. "This has nothing to do with them."

A low, humorless chuckle was his only reply. "Whether it does or not," he said smoothly, "is entirely up to you."

He placed a sheaf of papers and a pen on the bedside table.

"This is a sworn statement," he explained, his voice calm and reasonable, which was somehow more terrifying than his rage. "It attests that you were having an affair with Attorney Sullivan. It states that he coerced you into committing perjury and helped you frame Sterling for attempted assault to cover up your affair."

She stared at him, horrified. He wasn't just content with destroying her. He was going to take down the one person who had fought for her, the one person who had believed her.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head. "I won't. Attorney Sullivan is an innocent man."

The thin veneer of calm in his eyes cracked, revealing the cold fury beneath. "You are not in a position to make choices, Emilia."

As if on cue, his phone buzzed. He answered it, putting it on speaker.

The frantic, weeping voice of her mother filled the small room. "Emilia? Oh, honey, they took your father! The IRS, they just... they came and took him! They're saying there are problems with the company's taxes..."

The sound of her mother's sobs broke her. Hot tears spilled from her eyes, tracing paths through the grime on her cheeks. Her father was the most honest man she knew. He wouldn't even jaywalk. Tax evasion was unthinkable.

Knox ended the call, cutting off her mother's desperate cries. He watched her break, his expression unreadable.

"That's just the beginning," he said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "Sign the paper, and the investigation disappears. Your father comes home. Refuse, and he will die in prison. Your mother's retirement accounts will be frozen. The house will be foreclosed on. They will have nothing."

Every word was a carefully aimed dart, striking her where she was most vulnerable. He was using her love for her parents as a weapon against her.

Her gaze fell from his merciless face to the document on the table. A confession filled with lies. A betrayal of an innocent man.

Her mind screamed. She was trapped. There was no right answer, only different degrees of wrong. Condemn a good man, or condemn her own parents to a living hell.

Knox watched her torment, his eyes gleaming with a cold, triumphant satisfaction. He was enjoying this. He was savoring her destruction.

"You have two options," he said, laying out the terms of her surrender. "One: you sign the document. I let your family go. And I send you somewhere... quiet. To rest and recover."

His tone made it clear that "rest and recover" was a euphemism for something far more sinister.

"Two: you continue to be stubborn. I will dismantle your family, piece by piece, right before your eyes. And then," he paused, letting the weight of his words sink in, "I will send you to that same quiet place anyway."

The cold, hard truth of it settled in her bones. She had no escape. The cage was already locked. The only choice he was giving her was who she would drag down into the darkness with her.

She closed her eyes, the tears leaking from beneath her lids. A wave of utter, soul-crushing despair washed over her, so powerful it felt like it might drown her. Her body went limp against the thin mattress.

He knew he had won.

He picked up the pen and pressed it into her cold, unresponsive hand, closing her fingers around it.

"Sign it, Emilia," he murmured, his voice soft, almost hypnotic. "Just sign it, and end their suffering."
