Too Late For My CEO's Regret Novel Cover

Too Late For My CEO's Regret

I was just another invisible marketing clerk at the Jennings Group, a single mother counting pennies to pay for my daughter’s medical bills. Then the glass doors of the executive elevator opened, and the new CEO walked in. It was Bridger Jennings, the man who had shattered my world five years ago and left me to pick up the pieces alone. He wasn't the boy I once loved; he was a ruthless tycoon who looked through me with a gaze of total, crushing indifference. The torment started immediately. Bridger targeted me in front of the department, cutting the late-night transportation I relied on and mocking my "supportive husband"—a man who didn't even exist. When he spotted a red smudge of paint on my neck, he mistook it for a love bite from a rival. His jealousy turned into a weapon, and he buried me under a mountain of impossible work, sneering that I should let my husband provide for me instead. I stayed up until dawn to finish the task, only to realize someone had sabotaged my files to ensure my termination. My manager threatened to fire me on the spot, and Bridger stood by with a cold smile, waiting for me to crawl and beg for mercy. I couldn't understand why he was so obsessed with destroying the life I had built from the ashes of our breakup. Did he still care enough to hate me, or was he just trying to prove I was nothing more than a smudge on the glass of his empire? Slumping against my desk, I finally found the digital footprint of the person who tampered with my work. Bridger thinks he has me cornered, but he doesn't know I'm the secret artist he's been desperately trying to hire—or that he's the father of the child he's punishing me for. The war has just begun.

Chapter 7

The next morning was chaos. Birdie had refused to put on her shoes, and the toaster had shorted out.

In the rush, Gracia had been finishing a Zephyr commission-a digital painting of a crimson storm. She had wiped a smudge of red oil paint off her cheek but missed the spot on the side of her neck, right below her ear.

She arrived at work breathless.

At 10:00 AM, she went to the pantry. She needed caffeine to combat the drowsy side effects of the cold medicine.

The door swung open.

Bridger walked in.

He wasn't alone; the VP of Operations and the Legal Counsel were trailing him. They took one look at the tension in the room, grabbed water bottles, and miraculously remembered urgent phone calls they had to make.

They fled.

Bridger stayed.

He leaned against the marble counter, his arms crossed over his chest. His suit was a dark charcoal, tailored to perfection.

He watched Gracia fiddle with the coffee machine.

"You look better," he said. It sounded like an accusation.

"The medicine helped," Gracia said, not looking at him.

"Good. I can't have my employees infecting the whole floor."

He moved closer. He was too close. Gracia could feel the heat radiating from him.

His eyes scanned her face, then dropped to her neck.

He froze.

His gaze locked onto the red smudge.

To him, it didn't look like paint. It looked like a bruise. A love bite. A mark of possession.

Bridger felt a roar of blood in his ears. Last night. She was sick, she was broke, she was exhausted, and yet she had gone home to that man and let him mark her.

Jealousy, hot and corrosive, burned through his gut.

He stepped into her space, trapping her against the counter.

Gracia gasped, her back hitting the edge of the sink. "Mr. Jennings?"

His gaze was a physical weight on her skin, hot and heavy. He leaned in, not touching her, but so close she could feel the warmth of his body, see the fury tightening the muscles in his jaw. His eyes, dark and stormy, were fixed on the mark.

"What is this?" he growled, his voice a low vibration that seemed to shake her bones.

Gracia flinched at the sheer venom in his tone. She instinctively wanted to slap him, to push him away, but his proximity was paralyzing. "Don't," she managed to whisper, a plea and a warning.

"Rough night?" Bridger sneered. "Or did your husband just want to make sure everyone knew who you belong to?"

Gracia's hand flew to her neck. Her fingers came away with a tiny smear of red pigment.

Paint.

Relief washed over her, followed instantly by terror. If she told him it was paint, he might ask why a data entry clerk was covered in professional-grade oil pigments. He might connect the dots to Zephyr.

She couldn't risk it.

She lowered her hand, hiding the red tip of her finger.

"It's none of your business," she said, her voice shaking. "My private life is private."

Bridger's jaw clenched. A muscle ticked in his cheek. She wasn't denying it. She was protecting him.

"You're right," he said, his voice ice cold. "But your performance is my business."

He stepped back, putting distance between them.

"I want the ten-year historical sales analysis on my desk by 8 AM tomorrow."

Gracia's eyes widened. "That's... that's impossible. The archives aren't even digitized."

"Then you better start typing," Bridger said. "Unless you want to go home to your husband unemployed."

He turned on his heel and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the coffee cups rattled on the shelf.

Gracia rushed to the mirror. She saw the red mark. She scrubbed at it with a wet paper towel until her skin was raw and red.

Now it really looked like a hickey.

She stared at her reflection, tears pricking her eyes. He hated her. He hated her so much that he was imagining sins she hadn't even committed.

I lay paralyzed in a luxury Swiss clinic, my body a heavy sack of meat I no longer controlled. The heart monitor’s rhythmic beep was the only thing louder than the silence, a mocking countdown to my inevitable end. My fiancé, Jordan, walked in looking impeccable in the custom suit I had bought him for his birthday. He wasn't alone; my best friend, Chloe, followed him into the room, wearing the vintage Givenchy dress I had saved for our anniversary gala. Jordan didn't look like a grieving man; he looked bored as he held up a blue folder confirming that my family's offshore trust had finally cleared. Chloe giggled, leaning over me to ask if I finally realized it was the engagement wine she had spiked seven days ago. Jordan brushed a cold hand over my forehead, calling me a "perfect little asset" before pulling Chloe into a hungry kiss right over my dying body. To ensure there was no turning back, he pulled out a silver lighter and set my living will on fire, watching the only document that could have saved me turn to ash. I tried to scream, to curse them both to hell for stealing my life and my legacy, but all that came out was a wet, rattling wheeze. My own father, I would later learn, had known about the takeover and chose the profit over his own daughter's life. As the darkness swallowed me whole, I made a silent, desperate promise: if there was anything after this, I would come back and destroy every single one of them. I gasped, my body jerking upright as air rushed into my lungs like liquid fire. I wasn't in Switzerland, and there was no poison in my veins. I was back in my Manhattan bedroom, staring at a phone that read June 12—the morning of the wedding, the day I was supposed to die, and the day I decided to burn their world to the ground.

At the family banquet welcoming the return of the true daughter, my wealthy adoptive parents publicly announced that I should transfer the shares in my name to the "wronged" true daughter. All the guests praised my parents for their fairness and congratulated the true daughter on her hardships finally coming to an end. Relatives gathered around to persuade me. "You enjoyed twenty years of wealth that should have belonged to her. Giving up the shares is the right thing to do. You should know how to be grateful." My husband Javier Andrews, married to me for only half a year, also stepped forward and gently advised me. "Michelle, this originally belonged to your sister. Give it back to her. From now on, I'll take care of you." Everyone praised him for his deep affection and commended my adoptive parents for their justice, waiting for me to put on a show of sisterly love. Instead, I picked up the red wine from the table, walked over to the pitiful-looking true daughter, and smiling, poured the wine over her head. The entire room erupted in shock. My adoptive father, Kaiden Walsh, trembled with rage, pointing at me and cursing. "You ungrateful wretch!" Javier looked utterly disappointed. "Are you really that jealous of her? Do you have to make such an ugly scene?" I casually set down the empty glass and said lightly. "Ugly? I think this color suits her quite well."
