Chapter 2

The afterimage of the camera flashes danced behind Courtney's eyes like phantom suns. She ignored the cacophony of questions from the press, pulling her hand from Jordan's grasp as if his touch were toxic. She turned and walked away from the podium, her back straight, heading for the velvet curtain.

Jordan, caught off guard by her abrupt departure, fumbled for a moment. To maintain his public façade, he managed a tight smile and a wave to the reporters before quickly following her backstage.

The heavy soundproof door of the VIP lounge clicked shut behind them. The instant the door closed, Jordan's charming husband mask dissolved.

He yanked at his Tom Ford tie, loosening it with a vicious tug. "You see?" he sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. "Just like a well-trained dog. Throw you a bone, and you'll perform any trick I ask."

Courtney walked to the vanity table. She pulled a tissue from a box and gently dabbed at her collarbone, where a clear fluid was beginning to seep from the raw tattoo. She didn't look at him, but her voice was ice.

"That bone, as you call it, is the price of your public image, Jordan. It's the cost of the cheap fabric you use to cover up your affairs."

His face twisted in anger. He strode towards her, crowding her against the vanity. "Don't you forget for one second who you are," he hissed, his breath smelling faintly of expensive scotch. "You're Mrs. Stephenson. Every luxury you enjoy, every door that opens for you, is because of my family's name. Without it, you're nothing."

She finally looked up, meeting his furious gaze in the mirror. Her eyes were devoid of fear. "And what about Arianna's sister? Lillian."

The name hit him like a physical blow. Lillian Burton. His sainted, deceased first love. The ghost that had haunted their entire marriage.

Jordan's pupils contracted. A dark, ugly rage contorted his features. He raised his hand, the movement swift and violent.

It stopped, trembling, an inch from her face.

Courtney didn't flinch. She tilted her chin up, her expression a mixture of defiance and utter exhaustion. "Go ahead," she whispered, her voice a dare. "Give the tabloids a real story. A domestic abuse scandal in the Waldorf Astoria. I'm sure your father would love that."

His hand dropped to his side. A string of curses fell from his lips, low and guttural. "You're insane," he spat. He turned, kicking a small, elegant trash can with such force that it flew across the room, spilling its contents onto the plush carpet.

Then he was gone, slamming the door so hard the mirror in front of her vibrated.

The silence that descended was absolute. Courtney leaned against the vanity, her legs suddenly weak. She took a deep, shuddering breath, then another. She grabbed her purse and walked out.

The cold night air of Fifth Avenue was a shock to her system. She raised a hand, hailing a yellow cab that swerved to the curb.

"Upper East Side," she told the driver, giving her address.

As the taxi lurched into traffic, the city's neon lights streaked past the window in a meaningless blur. She pulled out her phone, opened her banking app. Leo's medical trust fund. The balance was terrifyingly low. Another month, maybe two, and it would be empty.

Her thumb scrolled through her contacts, stopping on a name she hadn't dared to look at.

Hayes Rich.

Her thumb hovered over the call button. This was the nuclear option. A deal with a man rumored to be more of a devil than a businessman. But as the image of Jordan's face, twisted with rage, flashed in her mind, her hesitation vanished.

She pressed the button.

The phone rang twice, a crisp, international tone, before it was picked up.

"Courtney."

His voice was deep, a low baritone that seemed to vibrate through the phone. It was calm, with no background noise, as if he were sitting in a perfectly silent room, just waiting for her call.

She took a breath. "I'm calling about your offer, Hayes."

There was a pause, just a beat or two of silence. "Oh?"

"I accept," she said, the words coming out more forcefully than she expected. "I'll agree to the marriage."

Another pause, this one longer. She could almost feel him on the other end, considering, analyzing. "Are you certain? Once you step through this door, there is no turning back."

"I'm certain," she said, her voice hard. "But I have conditions."

"I would expect nothing less."

"First, you take over all of Leo's medical expenses. Indefinitely. The best care, no matter the cost."

"Done," he said, without a moment's hesitation.

"Second," she continued, her heart pounding now, "I want my family's estate back. The Willows. My father... he used it as collateral before he died. I know your corporation holds the debt now. I want the deed, free and clear."

This time, a sound came from his end. It was a soft, almost inaudible chuckle. The sound was unnerving, devoid of any real humor.

"Consider it a wedding gift," he said. "My lawyers will begin the transfer tomorrow. Now, for my condition."

"Which is?"

"You will file for divorce from Jordan Stephenson. Immediately."

The taxi pulled up in front of her apartment building. She paid the driver, her phone still pressed to her ear as she walked into the grand, empty lobby.

"He won't make it easy," she said, stepping into the elevator. "He needs me. I'm his... his extinguisher." The word tasted like ash in her mouth.

The signal crackled slightly as the elevator ascended. "Let me worry about Jordan," Hayes's voice came through, smooth and confident. "Just know that I have more than enough leverage to ensure his cooperation."

The elevator doors opened to her private floor. She unlocked her apartment with her fingerprint, the door swinging open into darkness.

"I have my own leverage," she said, her voice cold. "Enough to ruin him and his family's reputation forever."

She walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the glittering expanse of Manhattan. "When... when would you need me to fulfill my side of the bargain? The duties of a wife."

His voice, when he spoke again, was different. Lower, rougher around the edges. "I don't need your body, Courtney. I need a partner. A wife in name, to present a united front to my board and silence the questions about my personal life. That is all."

She was taken aback. She had expected... something else.

"You'll receive a package from my legal team tomorrow morning," he said, his voice returning to its normal, controlled tone. "Review it. Sign it. We'll handle the rest."

"Alright."

"Goodnight, Courtney." He paused for a fraction of a second. "Or perhaps I should say... goodnight, future Mrs. Rich."

The line went dead.

She stood in the dark, the phone still in her hand, the dial tone buzzing softly in her ear. A shiver traced its way down her spine. She had just sold herself, from one gilded cage to another.

She walked to the bar and poured a glass of whiskey, the expensive single malt Jordan favored. She drank it in one long swallow, the liquor burning a fiery path down her throat.

The fire spread through her veins, igniting not fear, but a cold, hard resolve.

She set the empty glass down on the marble countertop with a decisive click. Then she turned and walked towards the study, to the laptop where she kept all of Jordan's secrets.

The counterattack had begun.
