Chapter 55

Sophie POV

The Great Hall felt like a tomb. The crowd filed out in silence.

I walked out from the cooking platform. My legs felt heavy. My palms were sweating.

I clutched the empty wine jars. They were the only things that saved us. I looked at the floor. It was stained with spilled wine and ash.

Martha, Silas, and Pip approached me. They did not look at the departing Northmen. They looked at the floor. Pip was still trembling. His small hands gripped his apron. He looked smaller than he did this morning.

"Chef, we are so sorry." Silas said.

His voice was filled with shame. He didn't look at me.

"We failed to keep the special ingredient safe." Martha whispered. "We watched it all morning. We stayed in the kitchen. We do not know how it vanished."

"I am the one who checked the pantry last." Pip said.

Tears streamed down his cheeks, leaving clean trails through the grime and soot on his face.

"I should have stayed by the jar." Pip added. "I let you down. I let the kingdom down."

"Stop." I said.

I looked at their faces. I saw the soot on their foreheads. They had worked through the night. They had faced the North with nothing but empty hands.

"You did not fail." I told them. "Someone in this palace has keys we do not have. We won a tie without our secret weapon. That is a victory of the mind. That is a victory of the heart. We used what we had. We turned a disaster into a feast."

"But the North won the game." Silas said. "The eight to one gap is a disgrace."

"The score is a lie." Martha said. "Everyone who tasted the beef knows it. The Alpha King knows it. The people know it. A tie is a chance to fight another day.

"Good thinking Martha." I replied. "Go rest now. We have a second round at sunrise. We need our strength."

"Will you be alright, Chef?" Martha asked.

She reached out. She touched my hand.

"I am fine." I said. "Go. Sleep while you can."

They nodded slowly. They left through the servant doors. I watched them walk away. I felt the weight of their safety on my back. I was responsible for them now. Every dish I cooked put their lives at risk.

A guard approached me. He stood tall. His hand placed firmly on his sword.

"Your presence is needed." The guard stated.

"By who?" I asked.

"His Majesty had sent me. He would like to see you in his chamber." The guard replied.

"Now?" I asked.

"Immediately." The guard replied.

I followed him. We walked through the corridors. The walls felt closer than usual. The torches flickered.

We got to the royal wing. Two guards were outside the door. They opened it without a word.

The room smelled different. Alaric sat on his bed. Without a shirt. His back was like a map of fresh scars. Deep bruises lined on his ribs.

A man i'd never seen before stood by him. The man wore a robe that looks familiar. Like that of a physician. He looked young. His hands were steady. He applied a green salve to Alaric's shoulder.

"The Chief Royal Chef is here." Alaric said.

He didn't turn. His voice a low growl. He sounded like he screamed all day.

"Check her hands." Alaric commanded the physician. "Treat the wound. Use the clean linen to cover it."

"I am fine, Alaric." I said.

I stood by the door. I didn't want to see his pain. It felt too private. It felt too intimate.

"You are not fine." Alaric snapped.

He turned. His eyes were dark. They were full of a hungry intensity. He looked like a wolf.

"Physician do as I said." Alaric ordered.

The physician bowed. He walked toward me. He took my hand carefully. I thought about the other physician. I wondered if this one is trustworthy.

"The cut is shallow." The physician said.

He wiped my palm. He applied a stinging liquid. I winced. I tried to pull away. But he gripped my wrist tighter.

"Apply the bandage." Alaric said.

The physician worked in silence. He wrapped my hand in clean linen. When he was done. He gathered his jars. He placed them in a bag. He bowed.

"I will return at the midnight hour to check on you, Sire." The physician said.

He left the room. The door clicked shut.

We were alone. The silence was loud. I could hear everything. I could hear the wind outside.

Alaric stood up. He walked toward me. He moved like a man. Even with his wounds. He was graceful. He stopped inches from me. He didn't touch me. He just stared. His eyes searched mine.

"I almost lost my mind today." Alaric said.

"You were protecting your kingdom." I said.

"No." Alaric whispered. "When you fainted. The world went black. I cared less about the kingdom. I cared less about the Moon Crescent Pack. I just thought you had left me. I thought you had returned to that place you talk about."

I looked at his chest. I studied his heart beat. I felt a pull in my own chest.

"I am here." I said.

I want to go back home. Back to a world without swords and blood. But why does my heart beat this way? Why does it race anytime Alaric is close to me? I thought in my mind.

"I did not feel your heartbeat for a second." Alaric said. "The wolf took over. If Cassian had not arrived. I would have hunted every living thing. I would have killed until I fell dead."

He reached out. He didn't grab me. His hands moved slowly. He arranged my hair. He tucked one stray lock behind my ear. His fingers brushed against my skin.

"Your hair is a mess." Alaric said.

His voice was softer now. He moved another strand of hair away from my eyes. He was gentle. It was more frightening than his anger.

"The forest wasn't kind to it." I said.

"You look like a warrior." Alaric said. "You look like you fought the sun and won."

He continued to fix my hair. His fingers ran through the tangles. He didn't stop. Until every strand was in place.

"Stay with me for a moment. Please." Alaric said. "Just for my head. The palace is noisy. The elders are shouting in my mind. Magnus is whispering in my ears. I need the peace you bring."

I did not move. I stayed in the circle of his heat. I felt the tension in his body. He leaned toward me.

"The second round is tomorrow." Alaric whispered. "Some people are angry. They feel cheated by the tie. They will try to sabotage your work."

"I know." I said.

"You must be careful, Sophie." Alaric said. "I cannot be everywhere."

"I will win." I promised. "I will win for the kingdom. I will win for the chefs."

"Win for yourself." Alaric said. "Win so you can stay with me."

He let go of my hair. He stepped back. Cold air rushed between us. I immediately felt the loss of his touch.

"Go now." Alaric said. "Eat something. Sleep. I will see you at the mark of the sun."

I left his chambers. I walked toward the kitchen. I needed to check the stoves. I needed to know if they'd washed the wine jars. I needed to think about the next dish. I walked through the servant corridor. It was dark.

I reached the kitchen entrance. I heard voices inside. They were low. They were sharp.

"You are being disrespectful, Damien." Silas said.

"I am being honest." Damien replied.

I stopped behind a pillar. I held my breath.

"The competition only ended as a tie because the Alpha King doesn't want his pet chef to lose." Damien said. "He is blinded by her. She had no plan. She threw wine in a pot because she was desperate. It wasn't a new technique."

"Stop being hateful." Silas growled. "Remember what she did for us. She saved our hands. She gave us a voice in this kitchen. She stood up to the North."

"She brought the North to our doorstep!" Damien yelled. "She is a magnet for trouble. Look at the King. He is bleeding because of her. We were safe before she arrived. We were a quiet kingdom."

"We were stagnant before she arrived." Silas said. "We were eating ash and calling it bread. Go to your quarters, Damien. Your bitterness is spoiling the air."

"I am going." Damien said. "But when she fails tomorrow. Do not expect me to help you clean the mess."

I heard footsteps. I pressed myself against the wall. Silas and Damien walked past my hiding spot. Damien was still muttering. Silas looked exhausted. He looked like he had carried the weight of the kingdom all day.

I waited till I no longer hear their footsteps. I walked into the kitchen. It was dark. Only a few embers remained in the hearth. They glowed like angry eyes in the shadows.

I walked to the center table. I reached for the pressure cooker. I wanted to be sure it's still there. I wanted to feel it weight. It was my only weapon in this place.

"It is a heavy burden for such small hands." A voice said.

I froze. My heart hammered. I didn't turn immediately. The hair on my body stood up.

"Is anyone there?" I asked.

I reached for the knife on the table. My fingers gripped the handle.

I saw a shadow. It stood near the pantry door. It was tall. It wore a long cloak that hid it's face. It didn't move toward me. It stood perfectly still.

"The former Chief Royal Chef thought she could change the flavors of Blackwood." The voice said.

The voice sounded like grinding stone. It was old. It was cold. It didn't sound like Magnus. It also didn't sound like Alpha Stone.

"She thought the King's favor was a shield." The voice continued. "She brought new cooking techniques. She tried to soften the hearts of the wolves. She tried to bring peace to a place of war."

"What happened to her?" I asked.

My voice was a whisper. The knife felt small in my hand.

"She died screaming in this very kitchen." The shadow said. "The vipers do not like new flavors. They do not like change. They like the taste of tradition. They like the taste of blood."

The shadow moved closer. I couldn't see a face. I only saw the glint of a silver ring. The hands that wore it were withered.

"The same will happen to you." The figure stated. "If you continue to win, you only make the vipers hungrier. If you lose. They will eat you. If you win. They will hunt you. Winning is not the prize here, Sophie."

"Then what is?" I asked.

"Surviving." The voice said. "But no one survives Blackwood for long. The ground remember every drop of blood."

The shadow vanished into the servant tunnels. I did not follow. I stood in there. In the dark kitchen.

The knife felt heavy. Then I realized that the competition was a cover up. The North was a visible enemy. I could see their knives. I could see their fire.

But the real danger sat at the King's table. The real danger walked in the shadows of the palace.

I was in a kingdom of vipers. And I had just stepped on their nest.
