Thrown Away by the Alpha, Claimed by His King
Chapter 4
One month later, General Thorne called me useless in the middle of the royal war room.
He was old enough to know better and proud enough not to care.
"We are discussing the western ridge," he said, planting both hands on the map table. "I fail to see why a former Silver Moon Omega is present."
Three commanders went silent.
Cassian sat at the head of the table. His expression did not change, but the room temperature seemed to drop.
I answered before he could.
"Because I know how Ryan moves troops when he is afraid."
Thorne looked me over. "And because the King needs you within arm's reach to keep his mind intact."
"Both can be true."
One of the younger commanders hid a smile.
Thorne did not.
"The court is already whispering that you are a weakness."
Cassian stood.
I touched his wrist.
He stopped.
That small movement told everyone more than a threat would have.
"Let him finish," I said.
Thorne's eyebrows rose.
"You want my opinion?" he asked.
"I want you to say exactly what you think while I am in the room."
He straightened. "Fine. I think you are untested. I think your presence changes the King's judgment. And I think if an enemy Alpha challenges him while he is protecting you, people will die."
"Test me, then."
Cassian turned his head sharply. "Aria."
"Controlled," I reminded him.
Thorne gave a humorless laugh. "You want me to challenge the King's chosen woman?"
"You already have. Use your aura instead of your mouth."
The other commanders moved away from the table.
Thorne glanced at Cassian.
Cassian's eyes had gone cold.
"If she tells you to stop," he said, "you stop."
Thorne faced me.
His dominance hit hard.
The pressure carried years of battlefield authority, stronger than Ryan's by far. It rolled over the table and drove one commander back a step.
I opened the void.
The energy rushed into me.
My skin warmed.
Thorne increased the pressure.
I took that too.
His expression changed.
"Enough?" I asked.
He pushed again.
I absorbed the third wave, separated aggression from power, then returned the force in one sharp command.
"Kneel."
Thorne's legs folded.
He hit one knee so hard the stone cracked beneath him.
Silence filled the war room.
I released the pressure immediately.
Thorne sucked in a breath and looked up at me.
There was anger in his face.
Then something more useful replaced it.
Respect.
"I withdraw the word useless," he said.
"Good start."
Cassian came around the table.
He did not grab me or display me like a prize. He simply stood at my side.
"Aria's gift does not make her my shield," he told the commanders. "She is here because she understands energy, strategy, and Silver Moon better than any of you. Treat her advice accordingly."
That mattered too.
After the meeting, Thorne found me in the corridor.
He held out a small tarnished coin stamped with Silver Moon's crescent crest.
"A courier offered me this yesterday," he said.
I turned it over.
A tiny H had been scratched beside the moon.
Hale.
Vanessa's family.
"What did the courier want?"
"For me to embarrass you during the royal introduction next week. He wanted the court to believe you were unstable and unfit."
"And you took the money?"
"I took the evidence."
I looked at him.
Thorne's mouth twitched. "I may be arrogant, my Queen-to-be. I am not cheap."
"Do not call me that yet."
His amusement faded. "The King has not asked?"
"The King has learned that asking comes before deciding."
Thorne studied me for a moment, then gave a short nod. "Good. A crown offered without choice is only another collar."
That was not the response I expected from him.
"You changed your opinion quickly."
"You put me on one knee with my own power and released me the second I yielded. Most Alphas would have kept pressing until something broke." He glanced toward the war room. "Strength is common in this palace. Restraint is not."
He tapped the Silver Moon coin in my palm. "Vanessa's courier did not ask me to kill you. He asked me to make the court laugh at you. That tells me she is afraid of legitimacy more than violence. She wants you to look temporary."
"Then I should disappoint her."
"Publicly," Thorne agreed.
Queen-to-be.
The title still sat strangely in my mind. I had spent years being told I was too empty to stand beside an Alpha. Now a royal general was discussing how I should enter court.
But I had not agreed to a crown, and I would not let gratitude make the decision for me.
Cassian was waiting in the private council room when I entered.
A parchment lay on the table between us.
"Before you ask," he said, "read it."
I unfolded the document.
It was not a mating contract.
It was a Royal Protection Charter written in my name.
The language was unusually direct: I remained free to leave crown territory at any time. My Scent Anchor ability could not be compelled by royal order. No mate claim, title, or blood oath could be imposed without my explicit consent.
I read the last line twice.
"Why?"
Cassian leaned back against the desk. "Because I heard every condition you gave me a month ago. I am not Ryan."
The answer struck somewhere deeper than I wanted it to.
I signed.
The ink looked almost ordinary, but my hand shook once after I set the pen down. Freedom written into law still felt unfamiliar.
Cassian signed beneath me.
Only then did he take another envelope from his coat.
The royal seal pressed into the wax was black and silver.
"What is this one?"
"Your introduction to the court. Copies went to every recognized territory this morning."
I turned the envelope over.
The destination was written in formal script.
Alpha Ryan Mercer and Vanessa Hale, Silver Moon Pack.
I looked up.
Cassian's expression was unreadable.
"They wanted you erased," he said. "Now they get to read your name beneath the royal crest."
