Chapter 5

The private elevator in Caspian's office building carried us to the forty-seventh floor in silence that felt heavier than lead. I stared at my reflection in the polished steel doors, seeing a woman I barely recognized—designer clothes, perfect makeup, and eyes that had learned to hide too much.

Caspian's office occupied half the floor, its floor-to-ceiling windows offering a commanding view of Manhattan that made the city look like a chessboard spread out below. Everything was glass and chrome, designed to intimidate. But after three years in prison, very little could intimidate me anymore.

"Sit," he said, gesturing to the leather chair across from his desk.

I remained standing. "What's so urgent that it couldn't wait?"

Caspian moved to a wall safe hidden behind a Rothko painting, his fingers dancing across the digital keypad. When it clicked open, he withdrew a small recording device—the kind used in professional surveillance.

"Eight months ago, my security team intercepted this," he said, placing the device on his desk between us. "A phone conversation between your ex-husband and his lawyer, Victor Hale."

My pulse quickened. "What kind of conversation?"

Instead of answering, Caspian pressed play.

Sterling's voice filled the room, tinny through the small speaker but unmistakably his. That same confident tone he'd used when explaining why he couldn't attend Rosalie's school play, why he had to work late again, why our marriage was failing.

"Putting her in prison was the simplest solution," Sterling said, casual as discussing the weather. "Nicky cooperated beautifully. She handled the forged documents without any issues."

The world tilted. I gripped the edge of Caspian's desk, my knuckles white against the dark wood.

Victor Hale's voice came next, nasal and calculating: "The key witness testimony was crucial. Mrs. Patterson's statement about seeing Ivy access the accounts after hours really sealed it."

"Patterson was easy to buy," Sterling laughed. "Fifty thousand and a promise that her son's DUI would disappear. People are so predictable."

My legs gave out. I sank into the chair I'd refused moments before, my entire body numb. Three years. Three years of my life stolen, three years separated from my daughter, three years branded as a criminal—all condensed into Sterling's dismissive laughter.

The recording continued. Forty-seven minutes of my husband and his lawyer discussing my destruction like a business transaction. How they'd moved money to make it look like embezzlement. How they'd coached Nicolette on her testimony. How they'd ensured I'd have no credible defense.

"The beauty of it," Sterling's voice crackled through the speaker, "is that everyone will believe Ivy's capable of this. She was always too ambitious, too hungry. People expect women like her to eventually cross lines."

When the recording finally ended, the silence felt apocalyptic. I stared at the device, my hands trembling—not from shock, but from rage so pure it felt like molten metal in my veins.

"When did you get this?" My voice came out hoarse.

Caspian's expression was unreadable. "Eight months ago."

The words hit me like a physical blow. "Eight months?" I shot to my feet, the chair spinning behind me. "I was still in prison eight months ago! I spent eight more months in that hellhole while you had evidence that could have freed me?"

"The recording was obtained through illegal surveillance," Caspian said, his tone maddeningly calm. "If we'd submitted it directly to the court, it would have been inadmissible, and my source would have been exposed."

"Your source?" I stepped closer, fury making my vision sharp. "I don't care about your source! I cared about getting out of prison, about seeing my daughter, about having my life back!"

"I needed time to find a legal pathway to introduce this evidence," he continued. "And I needed you out here, free, to help build a case that would stick."

The truth hit me like ice water. "You waited for me to be released because you needed me to provide the legal evidence chain. I'm not your partner in this—I'm your pawn."

For the first time since I'd known him, Caspian looked away. The silence stretched between us, filled with the weight of his deception.

"You're right," he said finally. "At first, yes. You were a means to an end."

The admission should have felt like vindication. Instead, it felt like betrayal all over again. "What else are you hiding from me?"

"Ivy—"

"What else?" I demanded.

Before he could answer, his phone buzzed against the glass desk. He glanced at the screen, and I watched his expression shift from guarded to grim.

"Your ex-husband just filed an emergency motion with the family court," he said, his voice careful. "He's citing your criminal record as grounds to permanently prohibit you from having any contact with Rosalie."

The floor seemed to drop away beneath my feet. "What?"

"The hearing has been moved up. Seventy-two hours from now."

Seventy-two hours. If Sterling won this motion, I might never see my daughter again. The recording that could save me was inadmissible, and Caspian had been playing chess with my life for months.

I grabbed my phone with shaking fingers, scrolling to Diane Morrison's number. She answered on the first ring.

"I was expecting your call," Diane's voice was steady but serious. "I just received notice of Sterling's emergency motion."

"Can we fight it?"

"We can win it," she said, "but I need you to do something that's going to be difficult. You'll need to testify. In open court. About everything you experienced during your marriage to Sterling Ashford."

My throat closed. "Everything?"

"Everything, Ivy. Including the nights he put his hands on you."

I'd never told anyone about those nights. Not the police, not my lawyers, not even myself most of the time. The bruises had always been in places my clothes could hide, the threats whispered in bedrooms where no one else could hear.

"Ivy?" Diane's voice seemed to come from very far away. "Are you there?"

I looked at Caspian, who was watching me with something that might have been concern. The recording device sat between us, a small plastic testament to three years of lies.

Seventy-two hours to save my daughter. And the only way to do it was to expose the darkest secrets of my marriage in front of a courtroom full of strangers.

"I'll do it," I whispered into the phone, though the words felt like swallowing glass.
