Chapter 3

The elevator in Caspian's building whispered upward with the kind of mechanical precision that money could buy. I stood beside him in the mirrored interior, watching our reflection multiply into infinity—two figures in evening wear who looked like they belonged together, though appearances had taught me to trust nothing.

The safe house apartment occupied the entire forty-second floor, its floor-to-ceiling windows offering a commanding view of Manhattan's glittering skyline. Everything was pristine, expensive, and completely impersonal—the kind of place where secrets could be kept and evidence could be examined without interruption.

"The laptop is already configured," Caspian said, loosening his bow tie as he moved toward a sleek desk positioned near the windows. "My tech team recovered everything from your cloud backup—files Sterling thought he'd permanently deleted three years ago."

I kicked off the Louboutin heels, feeling my feet sink into carpet that probably cost more per square foot than most people's rent. The Valentino gown rustled as I settled into the leather chair, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. For a moment, I just stared at the screen, remembering the last time I'd done forensic accounting work—the night before the FBI arrested me.

"Take your time," Caspian said, but I could hear the anticipation in his voice.

I opened the first file, and three years of buried memories came flooding back. Ashford Group's financial records spread across the screen in neat columns and rows—numbers that had once been my domain, my expertise, my downfall. I'd helped Sterling organize these accounts when we were married, had trusted him when he said certain transactions needed to be kept confidential for tax purposes.

How naive I'd been.

The work consumed me. Hours passed without notice as I cross-referenced bank statements, traced wire transfers, and followed money trails that wound through shell companies like a maze designed to confuse. My CPA training kicked in automatically—pattern recognition, anomaly detection, the kind of forensic accounting that had made me one of the youngest certified public accountants in New York.

Caspian brought me coffee at some point, the cup appearing silently at my elbow. The city lights blurred together outside the windows as Manhattan settled into its restless sleep.

It was 3:17 AM when I found it.

The number jumped out at me like a neon sign in the darkness: $2,300,000. A transfer from Ashford Group's primary account to Thornton Holdings LLC—the shell company that had been used to frame me. But this transfer had a timestamp that made my blood run cold.

March 15th, 2021. 11:47 PM.

I remembered that date with crystal clarity. It was the night before the FBI raid, the night Sterling had supposedly discovered my "embezzlement." According to the prosecution's timeline, I had stolen this exact amount over a period of months. But here was proof that Sterling himself had transferred the money to the account bearing my name less than twelve hours before turning me in.

My hands trembled as I took screenshots, saved files, cross-referenced the transaction with Sterling's personal calendar. He'd been at his men's club that night, playing poker with three federal judges and a senator. The perfect alibi while his money moved through digital channels, creating the evidence that would destroy my life.

"You found something." Caspian's voice came from directly behind me.

I hadn't heard him approach, but I could feel the heat of his body as he leaned over my shoulder to study the screen. His cologne mixed with the scent of expensive coffee and the lingering traces of the evening's champagne.

"He didn't just frame me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "He used federal wire fraud to do it. This isn't just embezzlement—it's a RICO case waiting to happen."

Caspian's laugh was soft and dangerous. "Sterling always was too clever for his own good."

I reached for my phone, scrolling through my contacts until I found Diane Morrison's number. The senior partner at Morrison & Kessler answered on the second ring despite the late hour—or early morning, depending on perspective.

"I hope you have good news," Diane's voice was crisp, professional, wide awake.

"I have evidence that Sterling Ashford committed federal wire fraud to frame me for embezzlement," I said without preamble. "Time-stamped bank records, transaction logs, the works."

A pause. Then: "Send me everything. Encrypted. Now."

"If this evidence is admissible—"

"It won't just overturn your conviction," Diane interrupted. "Sterling could be looking at federal charges. But Ivy, listen to me carefully. The Ashford family has been playing this game for three generations. They have judges in their pocket, prosecutors on their payroll, and enough political influence to make evidence disappear. You need to be prepared for them to come at you with everything they have."

I ended the call and began uploading files to the secure server Diane had provided. The progress bar crawled across the screen with agonizing slowness, each percentage point representing another nail in Sterling's coffin.

My phone buzzed with an incoming text from an unknown number. I almost ignored it—until I saw the area code. 212. Manhattan.

The message was brief, devastating in its simplicity: "Your daughter fell at school yesterday. Three stitches in her forehead. No one called you because you're not her guardian anymore."

Attached was a photo that made my heart stop. Rosalie sat in what looked like a pediatric emergency room, her golden curls matted with dried blood, a white bandage covering half her forehead. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, and she clutched a stuffed rabbit I didn't recognize.

My baby. My little girl had been hurt, scared, probably calling for me, and I hadn't been there. Hadn't even known.

The phone number wasn't random. I recognized it now, though I hadn't seen it in three years. Eleanor Ashford. Sterling's mother. The iron matriarch who had built the Ashford empire from old railroad money and new Wall Street connections.

"What is it?" Caspian's voice seemed to come from very far away.

I showed him the phone, watching his expression harden as he read the message. "Eleanor Ashford," I said. "She's making sure I know exactly how powerless I am."

But even as I said the words, something didn't add up. Eleanor Ashford didn't send threatening text messages like some common criminal. She was too sophisticated for that, too calculating. This felt different—not like a threat, but like... information.

Like she wanted me to know something that Sterling hadn't told me.

I stared at Rosalie's photo until my eyes burned, memorizing every detail of her face, the way her small fingers gripped the stuffed rabbit, the vulnerable curve of her shoulders. Somewhere in this city, my daughter was sleeping in a bed that wasn't mine, in a house where I was no longer welcome.

But Eleanor Ashford had made one crucial mistake. She'd reminded me exactly what I was fighting for.

And now I had the weapons to win.
