Three Little Secrets: The Billionaire's Hidden Heirs

For nineteen-year-old Lina Moore, a mandatory hospital health screening tied to a prestigious scholarship feels like her only escape from a life of control under her cold, demanding aunt and uncle. It's supposed to be routine. It changes everything. On the same day, a rushed nurse makes a devastating mistake-confusing Lina for Maris Moore, a registered surrogate and longtime friend of reclusive billionaire Adrian Hale. The real surrogate is mistakenly cleared and sent home. Lina, unaware of the mix-up, walks out of the hospital carrying a future that was never meant to be hers. Weeks later, Lina discovers she's pregnant. With no partner to claim, no explanation anyone will believe, and a family that sees her as a disgrace, Lina is cast out. Alone, frightened, and determined to survive, she disappears from the city-taking the truth with her. Three years later, Lina returns as a changed woman: composed, guarded, and fiercely protective of her three children-two boys and a girl. She's no longer running. She's building. Unknowingly, Lina secures a job at Hale International, a global empire owned by a billionaire known for his ice-cold demeanor and hatred for betrayal. Adrian Hale has spent years haunted by a surrogacy arrangement that failed-and by the children he was told never existed. As Lina steps deeper into his world, buried secrets begin to surface. A birth record that doesn't add up. Children who look too familiar. And a past mistake that threatens to destroy everything. The truth is coming. And when it does, nothing-and no one-will survive unchanged.

Chapter 8

The first letter arrived on a Tuesday.

Lina found it folded neatly among the bills and grocery flyers, the envelope heavier than the rest, cream-colored and expensive. Her name was typed, not written.

She didn't open it right away.

Experience had taught her that bad news announced itself politely.

The children were at the table, arguing over crayons. Ethan lined his in perfect rows. Noah insisted red was faster than blue. Elena hummed softly, coloring flowers far outside the lines.

Lina slipped the envelope into her bag.

She waited until bedtime.

When the apartment finally fell quiet, she sat on the couch and opened it.

Notice of Intent to Review Custodial Arrangements.

The words blurred.

Her chest tightened as she read on-legal language, carefully neutral, but sharp with implication. A third party had raised concerns. A review would be conducted. Interviews. Evaluations.

Lina's hands began to shake.

Maris.

She didn't need proof to know.

Her phone buzzed moments later.

Adrian Hale: I just received the same notice.

Lina stared at the screen, anger flaring hot and immediate.

Lina Moore: You said this wouldn't happen.

Several seconds passed before his reply came.

Adrian Hale: I said I would try to prevent it.

That wasn't good enough.

The meeting was scheduled three days later.

Lina arrived early, dressed carefully, the children beside her. She had braided Elena's hair twice to get it right. Ethan wore his favorite sweater. Noah had insisted on tying his own shoes and ended up with crooked knots.

They sat in a waiting room too bright to feel kind.

Across the room, Maris Moore sat with perfect posture, legs crossed, her expression calm, almost bored.

She looked exactly like Lina remembered from the hospital file photo Adrian had shown her-polished, wealthy, untouched by consequence.

Maris's gaze slid to the children.

A slow smile curved her lips.

Lina stood immediately and positioned herself in front of them.

Maris raised an eyebrow. "Relax. I'm not here to steal anything."

"You already tried," Lina replied coldly.

Maris tilted her head. "Tried? No. I corrected an error."

Adrian entered then, his presence shifting the air. His expression hardened the moment he saw Maris.

"You went too far," he said.

Maris stood gracefully. "I exercised my rights."

"You don't have rights to them," Lina snapped.

Maris's gaze flicked to her. "That depends on how the system interprets intent."

Adrian stepped closer to Lina. "Leave."

Maris smiled faintly. "Not yet."

The door opened, and a woman with a clipboard called their names.

The room they were led into was small, neutral, unforgiving.

The interviewer spoke gently, professionally. Questions about routines. About stability. About finances.

Lina answered honestly.

Maris answered strategically.

When the children were taken for a separate evaluation, Lina felt something inside her fracture.

Adrian sat rigid beside her.

"This ends now," he said under his breath.

Maris leaned back. "You can't end what already started."

That afternoon, Adrian called his legal team.

By evening, the situation was clear.

Maris had leverage.

Years ago, she had signed a preliminary agreement-one that included clauses about intent, compensation, and future involvement should circumstances change. The hospital error complicated matters, but it didn't erase her claim entirely.

"She wants a settlement," Adrian said grimly.

Lina laughed, sharp and broken. "Of course she does."

"She wants public acknowledgment," he continued. "And financial compensation."

"And the children?" Lina demanded.

Adrian hesitated.

Lina stood. "Say it."

"She wants access."

The word hit like a slap.

"No," Lina said immediately. "Absolutely not."

"I agree," Adrian said. "But legally-"

"I don't care about legally," Lina interrupted. "Those are my children."

Adrian looked at her, something raw in his eyes. "Then we fight."

"For them?" Lina asked.

"For you," he said. "And them."

That night, Lina sat awake long after the children slept.

Fear crawled through her thoughts. The system. The paperwork. The way people like Maris moved through the world with confidence and lawyers.

She had none of that.

Only love.

Her phone buzzed again.

Unknown Number: You can't win this alone.

Lina didn't need to guess.

Lina Moore: I'm not alone.

Unknown Number: We'll see.

The next morning, Adrian made a decision that shook the city.

He called a press conference.

Lina watched it on her phone, heart racing.

Adrian stood behind a podium, expression unreadable.

"I am here today to acknowledge a personal matter that has remained private for too long," he said. "Three children exist as a result of a medical and administrative failure. They are innocent. They deserve protection."

Reporters erupted with questions.

Adrian continued, voice steady. "Any attempt to exploit this situation for personal gain will be opposed fully and publicly."

Maris watched from her penthouse, fury flashing across her face.

Lina stared at the screen, stunned.

He had chosen a side.

That afternoon, another letter arrived.

This one was different.

A temporary injunction.

No further contact from Maris.

No custody changes until the review concluded.

Lina sank onto the couch, relief crashing over her so hard she cried.

Adrian arrived an hour later.

"You didn't have to do that," Lina said hoarsely.

"Yes," he replied. "I did."

They stood in silence.

"You put yourself at risk," she said.

"I put them first," he corrected.

Something shifted then-subtle, dangerous, undeniable.

A line drawn.

Not in contracts.

But in loyalty.

That night, as Lina tucked the children into bed, Ethan looked up at her.

"Are we safe?" he asked quietly.

Lina kissed his forehead. "Yes."

And for the first time since Maris had appeared, she believed it.

But somewhere across the city, Maris Moore smiled into the dark.

Because injunctions were temporary.

And she never lost a war.

I was tied to a concrete pillar in an abandoned warehouse, the heavy stench of gasoline suffocating me. Ten steps away, a masked kidnapper slammed a loaded Glock onto a metal barrel and forced my husband, Alvie, to make a sick choice. "The wife or the mistress. You only get to walk out of here with one." Alvie didn't even blink. He walked straight toward the dark corner where his mistress, Gail, was crying. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, shielding her, and guided her toward the exit. He never looked back. He didn't cast a single glance over his shoulder. To him, I was already a corpse, just trash left on the pavement. The kidnapper laughed and tossed a lighter onto the soaked concrete floor.
