They Voted Out the Wife Holding the Deed to Their Land Novel Cover

They Voted Out the Wife Holding the Deed to Their Land

For fourteen years, I paid my husband's debts and funded our son's life, only for them to vote me off the HOA. They wanted me gone, ignorant of why I strictly policed this suburb. It sits on stolen pack territory, protected by a blood ward only my lineage can maintain. When a rival digs up the keystone, a century-old horror is unleashed. As monsters rise, I see no reason to save those who discarded me.

Chapter 2

My fingertip rested over the sharp, fading slant of Eleanor Hollis's signature. I flipped the yellowed parchment over.

A hand-drawn map of Oak Creek covered the back. Seven red dots marked the boundary lines of the original estate. The seventh dot sat squarely on the corner lot, circled twice in heavy iron gall ink.

The keystone.

I opened my nightstand drawer and pulled out a crumpled yellow sticky note.

"Ma'am, the corner house is digging too deep," Reggie, the HOA patrolman, had scribbled last Tuesday.

Lola moved in exactly six months ago. She bypassed three available houses on the lake to buy the crumbling corner lot. She brought a heavy steel shovel, a high-powered headlamp, and a sudden obsession with maple trees.

It wasn't a coincidence.

I shoved the deed back into the cedar box, spun the combination lock, and grabbed my car keys.

Twenty minutes later, the glass door of the HOA management office swung shut behind me.

Dottie Miller sat behind the reception desk, her frosted lipstick stretched into a tight, practiced smile. A thick stack of printed forms rested by her keyboard.

"Maren," Dottie said, tapping a manicured nail against the top sheet. "I assume you saw the notification."

"I need the architectural files for lot forty-two," I said, ignoring the paperwork. "Lola's property."

Dottie sighed, sliding the stack across the laminate counter. "The board scheduled the emergency meeting for Friday. The vote takes effect in three days."

"I don't care about the vote."

"The process is completely compliant, Maren," Dottie continued, her tone laced with fake sympathy. "You can't stop a neighborhood majority. Garrett came in yesterday to pick up the final signature forms himself."

"Did he mention he used my inheritance to buy the suit he wore?" I asked.

Dottie blinked, her smile faltering. "Excuse me?"

"Lot forty-two, Dottie. Hand over the file."

"You are officially suspended from council duties pending the vote," she said, crossing her arms over her pastel blouse. "I can't let you review active permits."

"I am a resident," I countered, leaning my weight onto the counter. "Those are public records. Give them to me."

Dottie's jaw tightened. She swiveled her chair, yanked open the bottom filing cabinet, and slammed a heavy manila folder onto the desk.

"Take a look," Dottie snapped. "It won't change the fact that your own husband filed the motion to remove you."

I opened the folder. My eyes scanned past the generic landscaping permits straight to the foundation survey.

The elevation numbers on the bottom right corner had been altered. Someone had used a thick black pen to change the excavation depth from three feet to eight.

Eight feet down. Exactly where the anchor stone rested.

"Find what you're looking for?" Dottie asked.

Instead of screaming, I smiled. A wide, bright, entirely hollow smile.

"Yes," I said. "Thank you, Dottie."

I ripped the foundation page out of the folder, folded it in half, and shoved it into my purse.

"Hey!" Dottie yelled, half-rising from her ergonomic chair. "You can't take that!"

"Bill me," I said, turning for the door.

The midday sun baked the leather seats of my SUV. I slammed the door shut, locking out the noise of the street traffic.

My phone rang inside my purse. The caller ID flashed Garrett's name.

I hit answer and put it on speaker, tossing the phone onto the passenger seat.

"Where did you go?" Garrett demanded, the sound of Lola's shovel clanking in the background. "You just walked away. Theo is upset."

"I went for a drive," I said, popping open the glovebox.

"You need to come back and apologize to Lola," he said. "Everyone thinks you're acting crazy. You made a scene over a pile of dirt."

I reached past the stack of oil change receipts. My hand brushed the smooth plastic of a small rectangular box tucked into the farthest corner.

"I told you to leave the corner lot alone," I said, pulling the box out into the sunlight.

"It's not your property," Garrett fired back. "You don't control the world, Maren. I am trying to build a community here, and you are constantly tearing it down. You're isolating us."

I stared at the digital display screen. The ink had long since faded, but the two solid pink lines remained stark and undeniable.

Six weeks.

"I'm isolating us?" I asked, my voice dropping.

"Yes!" he shouted. "You hoard that stupid deed to the old estate. You hoard your money. You won't even let the neighbors plant a tree. You are completely selfish."

I had taken the test in the master bathroom while Garrett yelled at Theo about a missed curfew downstairs. I planned to tell him that night. Then he came upstairs, demanded I sell the ancestral land to fund his new business venture, and called me a suffocating burden when I refused.

"Are you even listening to me?" Garrett asked.

"I hear you," I said.

"Then come home and apologize," he said. "Show some support for once in your life."

He hung up. The line went dead.

I stared at the two pink lines for three seconds.

A baby. A child tying me to a man who rallied the entire street to throw me out. A man who forged foundation permits to help another woman dig up my family's land.

I shoved the plastic stick back into the dark recess of the glovebox and slammed the lid shut.

A sharp rap on the driver's side window made me jump.

Reggie stood outside, his gray uniform shirt soaked with sweat. He glanced over his shoulder toward the HOA office glass doors, then back to me.

I rolled down the window. "Reggie? I got your note."

"You need to see this," Reggie muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I couldn't put it in the system. Dottie monitors the upload logs."

"See what?"

He thrust a glossy four-by-six photograph through the open window. "Last night. Two in the morning. I was doing my perimeter check on the golf cart."

"Lola?" I asked, taking the picture from his shaking hand.

"She's been out there every night," Reggie said, wiping his forehead with the back of his wrist. "She isn't planting trees, Maren."

I looked down at the photo. The image was grainy, illuminated by the harsh white beam of a headlamp.

Lola stood waist-deep in the seventh hole on the corner lot. She wasn't holding a shovel. She held a heavy iron crowbar, wedged beneath a massive, dark stone.

"I tried to tell the board she was digging too close to the water lines," Reggie explained, pacing a tight circle next to my door. "But Garrett told me to mind my own business. He said Lola had special permission."

"Garrett gave her permission?"

"He signed off on the depth variance himself," Reggie said. "I saw the paperwork on Dottie's desk."

My grip on the photograph tightened, crinkling the glossy paper. Garrett didn't just want me off the council. He was actively helping Lola dig up the boundary line.

"Why did you bring this to me?" I asked, looking up at him.

"Because I know what your grandmother buried out there," Reggie whispered, his eyes wide. "My dad worked for Eleanor. He helped her set the stones forty years ago. He told me never to let anyone touch the corner lot."

"Did you tell Garrett that?" I asked.

"I tried," Reggie said, his hands shaking. "Garrett laughed at me. He said the old lady was crazy and you were just as bad. He gave Lola the green light to use heavy machinery starting tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

"They rented a backhoe," Reggie said. "It gets delivered at dawn."

I stared at the bottom edge of the photo.

Beneath the lifted edge of the anchor stone, a rusted metal lockbox sat half-buried in the dirt, bearing the exact same crest as the silver ring my grandmother gave me.

My lungs stopped pulling in air.
