Chapter 3

"Empty the rest of it," Margaret demanded, tapping her fingernail against the formica tabletop.

I tipped the cardboard shoebox upside down. A pile of crumpled fives, tens, and wrinkled twenties spilled out, burying the neat stacks already organized by denomination. A few loose quarters rolled across the table, clinking against the ceramic salt shaker.

"That is everything," I said, my voice tight. "Nine thousand, six hundred dollars. Two years of my life."

Margaret licked her thumb and flicked through a stack of twenties. "It is short."

"Short?" I gripped the edge of the table, my knuckles turning white. "Mom, you said bail was eight thousand."

"There are legal fees, Elena. The lawyer requires a retainer upfront." She did not look up from the cash.

"He stole a car," I argued, the injustice burning in my throat. "He took the BMW Dad bought with my tuition money, crashed it into a storefront, and ran from the police."

"He made a mistake under pressure." Margaret smoothed a wrinkled ten-dollar bill, flattening the corners with agonizing care. "Your brother is facing jail. Do you understand what a felony charge will do to his record?"

"What about my record?" I demanded. "I lost my university spot. That money was my backup plan for a state college next semester. I scrubbed toilets at the dental clinic for that money. I served drunk truckers at two in the morning for those tips."

"College is a luxury." Margaret gathered the bills, snapping a thick rubber band around them. "Family is an obligation."

"I am part of this family too."

"Then act like it." She shoved the bundles into a clear ziplock bag. "Brandon needs a clean slate. We have to clear this up before the arraignment on Monday. The lawyer says if we pay the settlement in full, the charges go away. Your brother walks free. No record. No prison."

"And what do I get?" I asked.

Margaret sealed the bag with a sharp pinch of her fingers. "You get to keep your family intact. That is more than most people have."

She did not look at me when she said it. She looked at the cash.

I stared at the empty shoebox in my hands. The cardboard was soft at the corners from years of being opened and closed under my bed. Two years of tips and wages and midnight shifts had fit inside it. Now there was nothing left but a thin film of dust and a single quarter that had rolled into the seam.

"That money was for college," I said quietly. "You always said it was mine to keep."

"Things change." Margaret tucked the ziplock bag into her purse and snapped the clasp shut. "Your grandmother's locket will cover the rest. The pawnbroker said it would fetch a fair price."

My hand flew to my throat. The chain was gone. I had not even felt her take it.

I looked at my mother's purse. I looked at the empty box. I understood, in that moment, exactly where I stood in this house.

I was not a daughter. I was a reserve account they drained whenever Brandon overdrew his.

I set the shoebox down on the table and walked out of the kitchen. Behind me, Margaret was already counting the bills again.
