Chapter 4

The yellowed parchment hit the mahogany table with a sharp, echoing slap.

My gaze dropped to the bottom right corner of the wrinkled page. Two handwritten initials, E.W., sat in faded black ink. It was my handwriting. A signature I penned twenty years ago in my grandmother's private study.

Daniel lunged across the roasted turkey, nearly knocking over a silver gravy boat. He snatched the document from under Chanel's acrylic nails, his eyes darting frantically across the typed lines.

"I, Eleanor Whitmore," Daniel read aloud. His voice trembled at first, but with each word, his volume grew. "Do hereby voluntarily relinquish all rights and interests under the Whitmore name."

He stopped. A heavy, suffocating silence blanketed the dining room.

"Read the next line, Daniel," Chanel demanded, a triumphant smirk spreading across her face.

Daniel cleared his throat, standing taller. The sickly gray color faded from his cheeks, replaced by a flush of arrogant relief. "I surrender all claims to the Whitmore estate, trust funds, and liquid assets, effective immediately."

He waved the yellowed paper in the air, turning to face the silent room.

"She played us," Daniel announced, pointing an accusing finger at me. "She played all of you. She has no money. She has no power. She gave it all up decades ago."

The polite, uneasy murmurs of the old-money guests shifted. The disgust aimed at my husband just moments ago now pointed directly at me.

Tom, the venture capitalist who had nearly walked out, paused near the arched doorway. He turned back, his expression hardening into a scowl. "Is this true, Eleanor?"

"She signed it," Chanel answered for me. She crossed her arms, her diamond tennis bracelet catching the light. "I paid a premium to unearth that file. She is a fraud."

"Unbelievable," a woman in a pearl necklace whispered to her husband. "Trying to extort her own family at a Thanksgiving dinner."

"She almost ruined his career with this stunt," another guest muttered, shaking his head. "What a desperate woman."

I did not defend myself. I kept my hands folded in my lap and looked across the table at Theo.

My son sank lower into his chair. He pulled the orange Hermès box tightly against his chest, refusing to meet my eyes. His knuckles turned stark white against the cardboard.

"Theo," Daniel said, his tone heavy with false pity. "I am so sorry your mother put you through this. She just wanted attention."

Theo didn't answer. He just stared at his plate.

Chanel walked around the edge of the table, her hips swaying. She stopped just inches from my chair and pointed at the damp gray wool wrapped around my neck.

"You are nothing but an abandoned daughter," Chanel sneered, her voice carrying over the murmurs of the guests. "You got kicked out of your precious family, and now you sit here knitting cheap scarves to play the victim."

I met her gaze. "I knitted this scarf for my son."

"You knitted it because you can't afford anything else," Chanel shot back. She leaned closer, invading my space. "You wanted Daniel to look like the bad guy today. You wanted everyone to feel sorry for you. But you are just a pathetic, broke housewife who couldn't handle the real world."

"Chanel is right," Daniel agreed, marching over to stand beside his mistress. He glared down at me, his chest puffed out in false bravado. "You embarrassed me for the last time, Eleanor. I want you out of this house tonight. Pack your cheap yarn and leave."

I didn't reach for the paper. I didn't raise my voice.

I extended my right hand and pressed two fingers firmly against Alaric's starched white cuff.

The old butler froze instantly.

"Alaric," I asked, keeping my tone perfectly level. "Did Grandmother ever reassign the seal?"

Alaric's pale blue eyes widened. His pupils shrank to tiny pinpricks. He stared down at my fingers resting on his wrist, the rigid posture of his shoulders breaking for a fraction of a second.

"No, Miss," Alaric replied softly.

"Then read the document my husband is holding," I instructed.

Alaric turned. He stepped forward with startling speed and plucked the yellowed paper straight out of Daniel's grasp.

"Hey!" Daniel shouted, reaching out to grab it back. "That is private property!"

Alaric ignored him. The butler held the document up to the light of the crystal chandelier. His eyes scanned the legal jargon for exactly three seconds.

Then, Alaric lowered the paper. His expression remained entirely flat, but his voice carried the weight of an executioner.

"Madam," Alaric said, addressing Chanel directly. "You clearly did not consult a corporate attorney when you acquired this copy."

Chanel's triumphant smirk faltered. She glanced at Daniel, then back at the butler. "What are you talking about? It says she gave up everything."

"It says she relinquished her inheritance rights," Alaric corrected. His voice boomed through the silent room, commanding absolute attention. "She gave up her claim to the trust funds, the liquid assets, and the residential properties."

"Exactly!" Daniel interrupted, throwing his hands in the air. "She is broke! She has no authority to void my membership!"

"However," Alaric continued, raising his voice just enough to cut Daniel off completely. "This document does not mention governance rights."

Tom stepped away from the door. He walked slowly back toward the table, his brows furrowed in confusion. "Governance rights?"

"Twenty years ago, the young miss abandoned the surname and the estate," Alaric explained, his gaze sweeping over the bewildered guests. "But she never surrendered the actual seal of the Whitmore Club."

Chanel's jaw dropped. The color completely drained from her face, leaving her a sickly, ashen white. "No. No, that's impossible. She knits her own scarves! She mortgaged a guest house to pay for his startup!"

"A guest house she owned independently of the primary trust," Alaric stated, folding the yellowed paper neatly in half. "The governance seal dictates who sits on the board, who receives funding, and who is granted membership to the Club. The young miss does not need to inherit the wealth. She controls the people who do."

Daniel stumbled backward. He hit the edge of the table again, the silverware rattling violently against the porcelain plates.

"Wait," Tom said, his eyes darting between Alaric and Daniel. "If she holds the governance seal, that means she personally approves every single venture capital match the Club makes."

"Correct, sir," Alaric nodded.

"Daniel," Tom said, his voice turning cold. "You pitched my firm last week. You told me the Whitmore board had already pre-approved your tech expansion."

Daniel swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead. "They did! I got an email from the proxy committee!"

"The proxy committee answers to the seal holder," Alaric clarified. "Any preliminary approval is subject to final review by the E.W. signature."

Chanel grabbed the back of her chair, her knuckles turning white. "You're lying. She would have used it by now. If she had that kind of power, she wouldn't have let Daniel treat her like this. She wouldn't have let me sit at this table!"

"I let you sit at this table, Chanel, because I wanted my son to have a peaceful Thanksgiving," I said, my voice cutting through her panic. "I stayed quiet because I valued my family over my pride."

Theo finally looked up from his plate. His eyes were wide, filled with awe and deep shame.

"But my family is gone," I continued, staring directly at Daniel. "You destroyed it the moment you let her insult my child's gift."

"Eleanor, please," Daniel begged, taking a step toward me. His arrogance had completely evaporated, replaced by raw, unadulterated terror. "I didn't know. I swear I didn't know. We can fix this. I will send her away right now."

"Daniel!" Chanel shrieked, her voice echoing off the walls. "You promised me!"

"Shut up, Chanel!" Daniel roared, turning on her with vicious speed. "You ruined everything! You brought that stupid paper here!"

He turned back to me, holding his hands up in surrender. "Eleanor, look at me. It's just us. I am your husband. You saved my startup once. You can save this deal too. Just tell Alaric to validate the proxy email."

I reached into my lap and picked up the silver pocket watch. The smooth metal felt heavy and warm against my palm.

I placed it on the mahogany wood.

With a sharp click, I popped the front cover open.

I flipped the watch over, exposing the inner casing to the chandelier's light. Right below my engraved initials, E.W., sat a string of etched Roman numerals.

It was the governance identification number. The only mark recognized by the Whitmore board, a code passed down only to the true head of the family.

I pushed the silver timepiece across the table. It slid smoothly over the polished wood, stopping exactly one inch from Daniel's trembling hand.

"You memorized three generations of the registry," I said. "Do you want me to teach you how to read the first page?"
