Chapter 1

My husband lifted his glass and called another woman the true lady of this house.

Twenty years of marriage, and he toasted his first love across my own dinner table.

My son shoved my hand-knit scarf back at me and said Aunt Chanel buys him Hermès.

The whole table laughed that soft, polite laugh rich people use like a knife.

Every guest had come to flatter Daniel, to watch him crawl into the Whitmore Club at last.

He took six months of riding lessons for this night.

He memorized three generations of a member registry he was never meant to read closely.

Because on the first page of that registry, the founding family's hidden heiress is listed by initials only.

E.W.

I set down my fork.

My maiden name is Eleanor Whitmore.

I walked away from that name twenty years ago because I wanted a man who loved me, not my bloodline.

I found one who spent his whole life loving someone else and coveting my family's doorstep.

Then the Club's steward walked in.

The entire table stood.

He passed my husband's outstretched hand without a glance, stopped in front of me, and bowed his white head low.

"Miss. The Madam asks if you are done wandering."

Daniel's wineglass stopped halfway to his lips.

And I finally let myself smile.

The silver pocket watch felt heavy against my palm, the engraved initials E.W. pressing into my skin. I kept it hidden under the edge of the linen tablecloth.

"To Chanel," Daniel said, raising his crystal flute. The amber liquid caught the chandelier's light. "The true hostess of this family."

Laughter rippled around the Thanksgiving table. Polite, restrained laughter from the old-money guests Daniel had spent six months trying to impress.

I stared at the half-empty wine glass in front of me. Twenty years ago, I signed away the Whitmore name and walked out of my family's estate with nothing but this watch. I wanted a man who loved me, not the empire behind my bloodline. Three years into our marriage, I mortgaged the only property left in my name for 1.2 million dollars to save Daniel's failing startup. He credited his success to a "mysterious benefactor."

Now, he stood at the head of our table, toasting the woman sitting to his right. Chanel smiled, adjusting the diamond tennis bracelet on her wrist.

Theo, our fifteen-year-old son, sat beside her. He pushed a folded gray bundle across the table toward me.

"Mom," Theo said, his voice flat. "Aunt Chanel got me Hermès."

The gray bundle stopped inches from my plate. It was the scarf I had spent the last three weeks knitting. My fingers were still raw from the cheap wool.

Daniel leaned over and pinched the corner of the gray fabric between his thumb and forefinger. He lifted it like it was contaminated.

"Really, Eleanor?" Daniel sneered. "We have guests. You couldn't buy something decent? This looks pathetic."

He dropped the scarf. It slumped against my water glass, knocking it over. Ice water pooled around the base, soaking into the hand-knit stitches.

Chanel placed a manicured hand over Theo's. "Don't be too hard on your mother, Theo. She means well, even if she doesn't understand our circles."

"I understand," Theo muttered, not looking at me. He pulled the orange Hermès box closer to his chest.

I didn't argue. I didn't reach for the ruined scarf. Instead, I tightened my grip on the pocket watch beneath the table. The metal was warm now.

"Daniel," I said, keeping my voice steady. "The wine needs refilling."

He rolled his eyes and shoved his glass toward me. "Make it quick. The guest of honor is arriving soon."

I stood and picked up the bottle of vintage Bordeaux. Daniel had spent weeks memorizing the three-generation member registry of the Club, taking equestrian lessons just to have something to talk about tonight. He wanted the founding family's backing for his next venture.

He had never looked closely at the first page of that registry. The anonymous founding heir was listed only as E.W.

I poured the dark red wine into his glass.

"The guest you're waiting for," I said softly, the bottle clinking against the crystal rim. "Will be here any second."

Daniel scoffed, fixing his tie. "And you better stay in the kitchen when he does. We can't have you embarrassing us."

The heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open. The murmur of conversation died instantly.

Alaric, the head butler of the Club, stepped into the room. His tailored tailcoat immaculate, his posture rigid.

Daniel's face lit up. He shoved his chair back, nearly knocking it over, and rushed forward with an outstretched hand.

"Alaric! Welcome," Daniel beamed, his voice loud in the quiet room.

Alaric did not raise his hand to meet Daniel's. He didn't even look at him. The old butler walked straight past Daniel's extended arm, his eyes scanning the room until they locked onto me.
