Chapter 4

"Sign right here, Damien. The early admissions counselor needs the retainer by noon."

I pushed the front door open. Wendy's voice floated from the living room, crisp and authoritative.

I dropped my keys on the entryway console. The metal scraped against the wood. No one came out to greet me.

I walked down the hall and stopped in the archway. Damien lounged on the center sofa, a leather-bound folder resting on his knees. Leo sat beside him, leaning over the glass coffee table to study a stack of glossy university brochures.

Wendy stood over them both. She wore a tailored beige blazer, tapping a gold pen against a printed schedule.

"You really think Stanford is a lock?" Leo asked. He didn't sound like the sullen teenager from last night. He sounded engaged.

"With my recommendation letter and your father's alumni donation? Absolutely," Wendy answered. She smoothed her hand over Leo's shoulder. "But we need to finalize the extracurriculars. I've already drafted a prep schedule for the next six months."

I stepped into the room.

"Morning," I said.

Leo flinched slightly, pulling away from Wendy's hand. He stared at his sneakers.

Damien didn't even look up. He signed the bottom of the contract and handed the folder back to Wendy. "You're a lifesaver. I don't know how we'd manage his prep without you."

Wendy smiled, taking the folder. "Honestly, Damien, this house couldn't run without me."

"It really couldn't," Damien agreed. He capped his pen. "Vivian doesn't understand the nuance of Ivy League admissions. She'd probably just throw money at a state school and call it a day."

I didn't argue. I didn't defend myself. I walked straight past the sofas and into the open kitchen.

"I didn't realize we were hosting a family consultant meeting before ten on a Sunday," I said, reaching for the electric kettle.

"Someone has to keep him on track," Wendy called out. "I'm just getting a head start on Leo's future."

"Let's look at the summer internships," Wendy continued, flipping a page on her clipboard. "There's a pre-law program in Boston. It runs for six weeks."

"I don't want to go to Boston," Leo complained.

"You need it for the resume, Leo," Damien said. "Wendy pulled a lot of strings to get you an interview."

"It's true," Wendy agreed. "The director owes me a favor. We just need to make sure your essay is flawless."

"Vivian can write the check for the tuition," Damien added, his voice carrying easily into the kitchen. "That's about all she's good for in this process anyway."

I filled the kettle and hit the switch. The water began to hum. Yesterday, that comment would have stung. Today, it just felt pathetic. They were planning a future for a boy who had no idea his entire life was built on a crime.

"It's so generous of you to volunteer your weekend," I replied.

Damien shifted on the sofa, crossing one leg over his knee. "It's not volunteering. I hired Wendy as Leo's educational consultant. She actually cares about his trajectory."

"Of course she does," I said. My voice stayed entirely flat.

I pulled a porcelain teapot from the glass cabinet. Last night, I had seen the signature on the clinic intake form. Damien and Wendy. They had orchestrated the swap. They had traded my real son for theirs. Now, watching Wendy hover over Leo, the sickening reality of their arrangement played out right in front of me. She wasn't just a mistress playing house. She was raising her own biological child under my roof, using my money.

"Vivian, since you're making tea, could you bring out those almond biscotti?" Wendy asked, not turning around. "The ones from the bakery downtown. Leo loves them when he studies."

I set the teapot down. "He's allergic to almonds."

Wendy waved a hand dismissively. "He outgrew that years ago. Didn't you, sweetie?"

Leo nodded, keeping his eyes on the brochures. "Yeah. I eat them all the time."

My jaw tightened. I opened the pantry, grabbed the bakery box, and tossed it onto a silver serving tray. I dropped loose tea leaves into the strainer. The water boiled, snapping off with a loud click. I poured it over the leaves, watching the dark amber color bleed into the water.

For sixteen years, I had served this family. I had managed the estate, funded Damien's failing ventures, and memorized every allergy and asthma trigger. All while they laughed behind my back.

I picked up the tray and carried it into the living room.

"Clear a space," I instructed.

Wendy reached out, pushing the stack of brochures to the edge of the glass table. "Right here is fine."

I set the silver tray down. I picked up the first cup and handed it to Damien. He took it without a word.

I picked up the second cup and offered it to Wendy.

She reached for the saucer. As her arm extended across the table, the cuff of her beige blazer slid up her forearm.

My eyes locked onto her inner wrist.

A jagged, pale line marred the skin, about two inches long. A surgical scar.

The living room noise faded into a dull hum.

Twelve years ago, Olivia had hacked the hospital's archived HR files. She had found a single, blurry photograph of the intern nurse who had swapped the ankle bands. The woman had been wearing blue scrubs, holding a clipboard. Her right sleeve had been rolled up, revealing a distinct, jagged scar on her inner wrist.

I had spent years looking for a nurse with that scar.

She was sitting in my living room.

The scar wasn't just a mark. It was a map. It connected the clinic intake form from last night to the delivery room sixteen years ago. Wendy hadn't just hired someone. She had put on the scrubs. She had walked into the maternity ward, found my baby, and made the switch herself.

The audacity of it made my pulse hammer against my ribs.

"Vivian?" Wendy prompted.

I blinked. She was staring at me, her fingers hovering inches from the porcelain cup.

"You're holding it too tight," Damien snapped. "Just give her the tea."

I released the saucer. Wendy pulled it toward her chest, her sleeve dropping back down to conceal the skin.

"Thank you," she murmured, offering a polite, practiced smile.

I didn't smile back. I stayed standing, looking down at her perfectly styled hair and her expensive clothes. Clothes paid for by Damien's company. A company I now controlled.

"That's a unique scar," I said.

Wendy froze. Her posture went completely rigid.

Damien frowned, setting his cup on the table. "What are you talking about?"

"Your wrist," I clarified. I kept my tone light, almost conversational. "I noticed it when you reached for the tea. It looks like an old injury."

Wendy quickly tucked her right hand under her left arm, hiding the wrist completely. "It's nothing. Just a childhood accident."

"Really?" I tilted my head, studying her face. "It looks like a scalpel slip. The kind of thing you might see in a medical setting."

Leo groaned, sinking back into the sofa cushions. "Why are you being so weird today? She said it was an accident."

I ignored him. My eyes remained fixed on Wendy. Her polite smile had vanished. The color was slowly draining from her cheeks.

"I was just wondering, Wendy," I continued, taking a half-step closer. I boxed her in against the armrest. "You seem so organized with Leo's files. It reminds me of a hospital chart. So precise."

Wendy swallowed hard. "I just like to keep things in order."

"I appreciate that about you," I said. "Organization is a rare skill."

Damien stood up, his patience gone. "Enough, Vivian. We have actual work to do here. If you're going to stand around and interrogate our guests, you can go upstairs."

I didn't look at my husband. I didn't move.

"Which hospital did you say you worked at as a nurse sixteen years ago?" I asked.

The room went completely silent.

Damien stopped moving. Leo looked up from his phone.

Wendy's hand paused mid-air. The edge of her teacup clinked hard against the saucer, a sharp, fragile sound.

"Vivian, why are you... so interested in my past today?"
