Chapter 2

My thumb hooked under the half-torn flap of the envelope. I pulled the rest of the way.

Dry glue snapped. The sound echoed off the mahogany walls of my study, sharp as a gunshot in the quiet house.

I reached inside and slid the brittle sheet of paper out. The edges flaked against my skin, rough and yellowed from sitting in the dark for over a decade. I ignored the dense paragraphs of medical jargon. I skipped past the faded lab letterhead and the dates. My eyes tracked straight to the bottom right corner.

The conclusion box contained just three words.

Not a match.

I stared at the black ink. My pulse stayed entirely steady. I didn't cry. I didn't throw a glass against the wall. I had shed all my tears sixteen years ago in the sterile bathroom of a private maternity ward.

The delivery room had been freezing. A young woman in blue scrubs fumbled the plastic bands. She slipped one onto the wailing infant, another onto the bassinet. "My mistake," she chirped, swapping them back under the glaring overhead lights. Fourteen days later, I called the hospital. "She resigned," the receptionist told me. "Moved out of state."

I smoothed the crease in the paper, my jaw tightening.

A mother without her biological child has zero leverage. Confronting Damien back then would have achieved nothing. He would have called me hysterical. He would have buried the hospital error, protected his reputation, and I would have never found my real baby. I needed the truth first. I needed a trail.

And I needed power.

I folded the report. I slid it back into the envelope, tucked it into the safe, and spun the dial. The heavy steel locked into place, sealing away the only piece of concrete evidence I possessed.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and scrolled to a single initial.

O.

The line rang twice before she picked up.

"You're calling late," Olivia answered. The rapid clacking of a mechanical keyboard bled through the speaker. "Usually means your husband did something stupid, or you finally decided to burn the house down."

"Neither," I said. I walked over to the desk and dragged my fingertips across the polished wood. "I need a file."

"Which one? I just sent you the updated financials for Damien's shell company yesterday. The offshore accounts are fully documented. We have enough to freeze his assets by Friday."

"Keep the assets frozen. But I don't need the financials." I leaned against the edge of the desk, crossing my ankles. "I need the old files. Seventeen years ago. The prenatal clinic."

The typing stopped. A heavy silence replaced the clatter of keys.

"Viv," Olivia started, her voice dropping a register. "We buried that box. You told me to lock that drive."

"Dig it up."

"Why tonight?" she asked. A lighter flicked over the line. She exhaled a long drag. "You spent over a decade playing the perfect mother to a kid who isn't yours. You played the supportive wife to a man who treats you like a bank. You said you were waiting until you had absolute control of the holding company before we reopened the medical investigation."

"I secured fifty-one percent of the shares last month," I reminded her. "The board answers to me now."

"So the financial war is won. But why pull the medical files tonight of all nights?"

"Because Leo asked for Wendy to be his mother for his sixteenth birthday," I stated flatly. "And Damien laughed."

A sharp exhale crackled through the speaker. "Bastard."

"I don't care about their little family dynamic anymore," I said, keeping my tone entirely even. "I care about the missing piece. The intern nurse didn't act alone. Someone paid her to switch those tags. Someone paid the hospital IT department to wipe the security footage two days later."

"A supposed server crash," Olivia muttered. "I remember. We hit a dead end."

"We hit a dead end on the birth records," I corrected. "But the setup started earlier. It started during the pregnancy."

"You think they planned the swap that far in advance?" Olivia asked.

"I know they did." I pushed off the desk and paced toward the window. "A random intern doesn't just decide to swap babies for fun. She was planted. And whoever planted her needed a baby with a matching blood type, born on the exact same day, in the exact same hospital. That takes months of coordination."

"Which means they needed access to your medical file early on," Olivia finished the thought. "To find a donor baby."

"Exactly. I need the clinic records. Specifically, the companion form."

"The intake paperwork?"

"Yes. The form from the day I was admitted for early contractions. Send it to me again."

Olivia didn't immediately reply. I heard the faint squeak of her leather office chair, the rustle of a drawer opening, the click of a mouse.

"Give me a second," she said.

I parted the heavy velvet curtains. The driveway remained empty. Damien's matte-black Porsche was still gone. He and Wendy were probably buying Leo another useless arcade prize, parading around downtown like a picture-perfect trio.

Let them. They were celebrating a victory they hadn't actually won.

"I'm opening the archive," Olivia announced. "Password protected. Give me a minute to bypass my own encryption."

"Take your time."

"You realize this is just an intake form, right? Damien was on a business trip in London when you had those cramps. You went to the clinic alone."

"I didn't go alone," I said, staring at my reflection in the dark glass. "I called a car service. But the clinic required an emergency contact to sign the release form before they discharged me."

"Right. And Damien couldn't sign from London."

"Exactly."

"So who signed it?"

"I don't know," I admitted. "I was heavily medicated. They gave me a sedative to stop the contractions. By the time I woke up, the nurse said my emergency contact had handled the paperwork and left."

"And you never checked the signature?"

"Damien told me his assistant handled it. I had no reason to question him back then. I was just relieved the baby was safe." I let the curtain fall shut. "But if they were planning the swap, the person who signed that form had to be involved. They needed access to my medical file to find a match for the swap."

More clicking echoed over the line. Faster this time.

"Found the folder," Olivia said. "Opening the PDF."

"Send it to my secure email."

Two seconds of dead air followed.

The typing didn't resume. The background noise of her office vanished entirely.

"Olivia?" I pressed. My grip tightened on the phone casing.

She didn't answer.

"Did the file corrupt?" I asked.

"No," Olivia said. Her voice sounded tight, completely stripped of its usual dry sarcasm.

"Then send it."

Olivia went silent for two seconds. "Viv, the name on the companion form's signature line... are you sure you want to look at it right now?"
