They Bullied My Son Without Knowing I Was the Luna

Chapter 3

"School protocol requires a full assessment," Lacey stammered.

She backed into the oak door as my aura pressed through the hallway. I kept it controlled. No one dropped to their knees. No glass shattered. But every human instinct in the corridor understood the same thing: I was done asking.

Principal Patrice hurried toward us, clutching a metal clipboard.

"The nurse has to complete a dangerous-child evaluation before we release him, Mrs. Gray. We cannot ignore safety procedure because a parent is upset."

"He is five," I said. "He is alone in a locked room. Open it."

"He tried to bite a staff member."

Through the glass, Toby heard her.

His head jerked up. "I didn't!"

The silver in his eyes brightened.

"Open it now."

One of the assistants fumbled through a ring of keys. The deadbolt clicked. The door swung outward and hit the wall.

Toby did not run to me.

He sat in the center of the padded floor and lifted both hands, palms up, to prove they were empty.

"I was good, Mommy," he whispered. "I didn't bite anybody. I counted like you said."

That nearly broke me.

I dropped to my knees and pulled him against my chest. Heat poured through his shirt. His pulse hammered too fast beneath my palm, and the skin around his wrist was red where the broken scent cord had rubbed.

"I know you didn't."

I buried my face against his hair and pushed my scent over him, wrapping cedar and moonlight around the raw edge of his Alpha blood. His trembling eased. The silver retreated from his irises by degrees.

"What happened?"

Toby glanced at Lacey and lowered his voice. "Hudson kept the bracelet. I told him it was mine. Miss Lacey said I had to share because I already caused trouble yesterday. Then Hudson pulled the string hard and it scratched me. I growled a little."

"And then?"

"Miss Lacey said animals who growl need a cage."

The words landed with such force that the room seemed to tilt.

Behind me, one assistant whispered, "She did say that."

Lacey spun toward her. "I was trying to de-escalate him."

"By calling him an animal?" I asked.

Patrice stepped between us. "No one is using inflammatory language in an official record. Toby was moved to a regulation space after displaying threatening behavior."

I stood with Toby in my arms.

"Was the door locked?"

The principal's jaw tightened. "For safety."

"Was I called before he was isolated?"

"The automated notification was sent."

"After you locked him inside."

No answer.

The school nurse arrived at a run. She took one look at Toby's flushed face and reached for a thermometer.

"May I?" she asked him.

Toby looked at me.

"Your choice," I said.

He nodded.

The nurse checked his temperature, his pupils, and the scrape on his wrist. "One hundred point eight. Stress response, maybe. He needs fluids and a quiet place with his parent. Not isolation."

Lacey folded her arms. "He was not safe in the classroom."

"Neither was he," the nurse replied, sharper than before.

Toby leaned against my shoulder. "Mommy, is the Quiet Room where bad kids go?"

"No."

"Then why did they say I had to stay until I was normal?"

I looked directly at Patrice.

"Who said that?"

Toby pointed at Lacey.

Patrice's composure cracked for the first time. "We need to stop taking a distressed child's wording as literal testimony."

I shifted Toby to one hip and held out my free hand.

"Give me the incident report."

Patrice hesitated, then handed over the clipboard.

The first line read: Student became physically threatening after being asked to share a personal object.

The second: Student displayed animalistic vocalizations.

The third: Parent has previously challenged school authority.

There was no mention of Hudson taking the bracelet. No mention of the cord breaking. No mention of the insult. No mention that Toby had been put in the room before I was notified.

At the bottom, someone had checked a box authorizing an outside behavioral consultant to review the incident.

My pulse slowed instead of racing.

"Who is the consultant?"

Patrice reached for the clipboard. "That is an internal matter."

I moved it out of reach.

The line where a name should have appeared was blank.

Cold iron and pine flashed through my memory.

The curb.

The broken seal.

A consultant with no listed name.

I turned to Hudson. He was still holding the two pieces of moonstone cord.

"Who gave that back to you?"

Hudson shrugged. "The tall man. He said Toby shouldn't have jewelry at school."

Bianca had just arrived at the end of the corridor. Her face changed when she heard him.

"What tall man?" she demanded.

Hudson pointed toward the staff entrance. "The one you talked to yesterday. Mr. Niles."

For one heartbeat, nobody moved.

Then Bianca snapped, "Hudson, stop making things up."

Toby went very still in my arms.

I had my answer. The scent outside the gate had not been accidental. Someone had been close enough to touch the seal on my son's wrist.

I took out my phone and called Dorian.

He answered on the first ring.

"Mira?"

"The scout is inside the school. He has had direct access to Toby."

Silence.

Then my husband's voice changed into the tone that had once stopped a border war before the first strike.

"Location."

"Arbor Crest. Do not shift. Do not bring the Guard onto school property until Gideon confirms the cameras are secured."

"I am coming."

The call ended.

Patrice stared at me as if I had started speaking another language. "Scout? Guard? Mrs. Gray, if this is some kind of threat—"

The reception doors opened at the far end of the corridor.

Gideon Vale walked in wearing a charcoal suit, his expression calm and lethal. Two members of the Arbor Crest board followed him, along with the school's outside counsel.

He took in Toby's flushed face, the locked Quiet Room, the broken moonstone in Hudson's hand, and the incident report in mine.

Then he looked at Patrice.

"Before you ask Mrs. Gray to sign one more document," Gideon said, "you should probably find out who you have been talking to."

Patrice swallowed. "And who exactly is she?"

Gideon's gaze shifted to me.
