Chapter 3

The most dangerous men are never the ones who shout. They are the ones who smile and mean neither.

The evening belonged to Viktor Savino the way most evenings did.

He stood at the center of the Carrington Club's private dining room, a room that smelled of old leather and older money. Around him the conversation moved at the pace he set. When he spoke people leaned in. When he paused, people waited. When he laughed, the room found something to laugh at too. Not from sycophancy but from the gravitational pull of a man who had spent sixty two years perfecting the art of making everyone in his radius feel that being near him was a privilege.

It was not an act. That was the most important thing to understand about Viktor Savino.

He genuinely liked people. He genuinely enjoyed evenings like this one, the particular pleasure of a room full of intelligent individuals who had chosen to align themselves with someone who could make their lives considerably easier. He cared about the people around this table the way a man cares about the instruments in an orchestra he has spent years assembling. With appreciation. With investment. With the quiet pride of someone who knows the music would not exist without him.

Commissioner Halverson was saying something about the new waterfront development: the permits, the timeline, the particular councilman who was making himself inconvenient. Viktor listened with his full attention.

"He'll come around," Viktor said, when Halverson finished.

"Men like that need to feel heard before they can feel useful. Give him the subcommittee seat. He'll find his objections considerably easier to manage once he has something to protect."

Halverson nodded slowly.

His phone moved against his jacket pocket.

Not a ring. It was a vibration. He did not reach for it. He held Halverson's gaze. When the conversation had found its own momentum, he excused himself with the ease of a man who has somewhere better to be and wants you to feel good about the fact that he chose to stay this long.

He stepped toward the edge of the room.

Opened the message.

Primary detail unresponsive. Attempted contact three times. Secondary en route to confirm.

Viktor read it twice. His expression did not change. Around him the room continued its pleasant noise. Glassware, conversation and the low comfortable register of people who had never once worried about where their next meal was coming from.

He typed one line back.

Find out why. Now.

He pocketed the phone. Returned to the table. Accepted a refill of the Barolo he had not finished. Then resumed the conversation about the waterfront development with the same warmth and precision he had left it with, because Viktor Savino did not allow the contents of one message to alter the quality of his presence in the room. That was discipline. That was the difference between men who reacted and men who responded and Viktor had not reacted to anything in a very long time.

But he checked his watch.

Just once. Briefly. A glance so practiced it barely registered as a break in attention.

The man beside him noticed anyway. "Somewhere to be, Viktor?"

"Only here," Viktor said with a smile that reached his eyes completely. "I'm simply making sure I give you the rest of the evening you deserve."

The room was filled with laughter before the moment passed.

Viktor's thumb moved across his phone screen beneath the table.

He excused himself properly. Forty minutes later, there were handshakes, genuine warmth farewell that made people felt that the conversation had concluded rather than been abandoned. He was good at endings. He had always been good at endings.

His car was waiting at the private entrance. His driver, a man of few words and absolute discretion who had been with him for eleven years opened the door without being signaled.

Viktor sat and the door closed. The city moved past the windows.

He called his security chief.

"Report."

"Primary detail is confirmed unresponsive." A pause. It was the pause of a man choosing his words.

"We found the vehicle, sir. Eastern parking structure, two blocks from the foundation building. The team was..." Another pause. Shorter. "Incapacitated."

Viktor said nothing for a moment.

Outside the window a traffic light changed from green to red. His driver stopped smoothly. The city continued its indifferent motion around them.

"The foundation event," Viktor mentioned.

"Yes sir. The gala."

"Serena was there tonight."

"Yes sir."

Viktor ended the call.

Opened his contacts. Found her name listed simply as Serena, no last name, because there was only one Serena in Viktor Savino's world and there had only ever been one. He pressed call and held the phone to his ear and looked out at the city he had spent thirty years arranging to his specifications.

It rang.

Four times. Five. Six.

Voicemail.

You've reached Serena Savino. Please leave a message.

He did not leave a message.

He called again.

The traffic light ahead turned green. His driver moved forward. The city slid past. Viktor sat completely still with the phone pressed to his ear and listened to it ring. Once, twice, three times.

Voicemail again.

He lowered the phone.

Looked at it for a moment. At her name on the screen. At the small profile photograph he had taken himself two years ago at the foundation's summer opening. She was laughing at something off camera with her hair loose and her face entirely unguarded in the way it only ever was when she forgot someone was watching.

It was his favorite photograph of her. He had never told her that.

He had meant to.

"Take me to the foundation building," he ordered.

His driver made no comment. Made no indication that this was not the agreed destination for the evening. Simply changed course with the quiet competence Viktor had spent eleven years selecting for.

Viktor sat back.

He was not afraid. Viktor Savino did not do afraid. It was a category of feeling he had classified long ago as both unproductive and beneath the standard of comportment he held himself to. What he felt instead was something he had not felt in a considerable number of years. It was a feeling of slight displacement, recalibration and mental sensation of reaching for something that had always been exactly where he left it and finding the space empty.

His security detail was incapacitated. His daughter was not answering.

He turned the phone over once in his hand and looked out at the city.

Names moved through his mind. It was a longer list than most men's. Viktor had made a great many decisions over the course of his career and not all of them had been received with understanding by the people they most directly affected.

Most of those people were no longer in a position to act on their feelings.

Most.

One name surfaced differently from the others. Not because it was the most prominent. It wasn't, not anymore, it had been fifteen years. But because it arrived with a specific quality of weight that the others did not carry. A name from a decision he had made quickly and cleanly and had not examined since because examining it would have required calling it something other than what he had called it at the time.

Necessary. He had called it necessary.

"Morretti."

Viktor looked at the photograph of Serena on his phone screen for a long moment.

Then he pressed call one final time.

It rang. Once. Twice.

On the third ring someone answered.

Not Serena.

The silence on the other end of the line was the specific silence of someone who had been waiting for this call. Someone who had known it would come. Someone who had, in fact, arranged everything about this evening precisely so that it would.

Viktor did not speak first. He had not survived sixty two years by being the first man to speak in a room whose rules he did not yet understand.

The silence stretched. Then the voice on the other end said two words.

"Hello, Viktor."

The line went dead.

Viktor lowered the phone slowly.

Outside the window, the foundation building came into view. Its lights dark, its entrance empty, three black vehicles pulled away from the curb already disappearing around the corner at the far end of the block.

His driver said nothing. Viktor said nothing. His hand rested against his leg, perfectly still. He had made a calculation fifteen years ago.

It appeared the calculation had just called him back.
