The Wolf King's Unwanted Mate Novel Cover

The Wolf King's Unwanted Mate

Zivah is not a willing bride—she is a political payment, signed away by her father and delivered to the Wolf King's citadel. Six women entered Vordenmaar before her. None returned. Her only goal is to survive long enough to escape. But within those black iron walls, she finds a hidden journal that stops mid-sentence on day fourteen, and a silver-haired elder whose warm smile conceals a decades-long hunt for a bloodline. King Ravn Ashvael outlawed the very word for what stirs between them, determined to rule without weakness. Yet his wolf recognized Zivah before he finished reading her name. As an ancient secret threatens to collapse kingdoms, a patient enemy closes in, and neither can stop the connection building between them.

Chapter 2

He read her name once.

Signed the document. Placed it on the left side of his desk where finished matters went and reached for the next item without pausing. The fire burned at its usual height. Outside, the Ashen Reaches pressed their winter weight against the citadel walls the way they always had. Without feeling. Without stopping.

He didn't think about the document again.

He thought about it three more times before the candle burned down an inch.

Thessaly's report arrived after the evening council. Hands clasped. Back straight. Eyes giving nothing she hadn't chosen to give.

"Composed throughout intake. No visible distress on arrival."

Ravn turned a page. "The others were composed."

"Not like this." A beat. "She asked one question before being shown to her room."

He didn't look up. "Which was."

"Where is the library?"

His pen stopped on the page.

He made himself move it again. Same pressure. Same angle. A king's stillness was architecture built over seventeen years. He could hold it through almost anything.

"Standard observation. Nothing further."

Thessaly left.

He sat with his pen in his hand and did not think about a woman who walked into Vordenmaar and asked for the library. Six tributes before her. Not one had asked for the library. No one had spent her first afternoon in treaty documentation. He thought about it twice more before he stood and went to the battlements.

The cold received him like something that had been waiting.

He walked the upper wall with his hands behind his back and let the night strip everything back. The border ruling. The eastern alliance. The trade agreement was unsigned on his desk. His one hour. The hour that owed nothing to anyone.

He made it halfway around before his wolf moved.

Subtle at first. An internal shift, awareness narrowing toward something before the mind understood why. Ravn kept his pace even and told himself it was the wind.

The wind changed.

It came from the east wing.

His wolf surged forward with a force he hadn't felt in five years. Not since before Sable. Not since before the decree. It pressed against his chest with a certainty so absolute his next breath came out wrong and his hands behind his back went completely still.

He turned away from the east wing.

His wolf turned back.

Ravn stood in the argument of it, jaw tight, cold burning across his face. He thought about the decree. Written three months after Sable died. Signed across twenty-three territories because the alternative was allowing fate to make him responsible for another person's destruction.

He walked toward the east wing stairs anyway.

Two flights down. The corridor. Third door on the left.

No light beneath it.

He stood outside the tribute room and felt the pull like something running through the stone itself. His wolf pressed forward. He counted thirty seconds with the deliberateness of a man using numbers to hold a wall in place.

Thirty seconds.

He turned around. Walked back. Sat at his desk and opened the intake document and read her name in the low lamplight.

Zivah.

He closed it. Place it back on the left side of the desk. Held his pen over the correspondence and did not write a single word for a long time.

He was still at his desk when the east wing light went out.

His wolf felt it before his eyes confirmed it. The tribute room window had been a faint gold presence at the edge of his vision for two hours. Then it wasn't. She had finally slept.

He told himself he felt nothing about that.

He pulled the decree from the bottom drawer and read it from the beginning for the first time in eight months. Every clause. Every argument for why what his wolf was pressing against his ribs was fabrication. He read it to the end. Folded it. Put it back.

Thessaly's report sat at the corner of his desk. He turned to the final line and read it a third time.

Subject accessed territorial law texts and pack succession records. Duration two hours fourteen minutes. One loose floor stone in the tribute room found disturbed during evening inspection. Contents of the hollow beneath it are unknown.

Contents unknown.

He set the report down.

Something was already in that hollow before she arrived. He had placed it there himself. Three months ago. A slim journal pressed flat against the inner wall where only someone who knew to look would find it.

He had been waiting two years for the right woman to find it.

He had not anticipated what it would feel like when she did. A woman who walked through his gate and asked for the library and spent her first night lifting floor stones in the dark.

His wolf settled low in his chest and stayed there.

Ravn left the decree in the drawer and worked through the correspondence until dawn. He did not sleep. He did not stop thinking about her name.
