Chapter 3

I pulled my phone from my back pocket and aimed the camera at the laptop screen. The shutter clicked loudly in the quiet kitchen, capturing the bright green checkmark and the submission confirmation number.

"What are you doing?" Owen asked, his hand darting toward the keyboard.

I stepped in front of his arm, blocking his reach. "Documenting the confirmation code. USCIS Receipt ending in 492."

"Delete that picture," he demanded, his voice cracking slightly.

"No." I tapped the screen to lock my phone and slid it back into my pocket. "You submitted a sworn statement to the federal government. You do not get to erase the evidence just because you are angry about your AP Physics tuition."

Owen scoffed, though his shoulders stiffened. "It is already in the system. Taking a picture does not change anything."

"It proves exactly when and where this was filed," I said. "And it proves who pressed the button."

"Dad told me to do it!"

"Then your dad can pay for your consequences," I replied.

I turned my back on him and walked out of the kitchen. My footsteps echoed down the short hallway to the home office. I pushed the heavy oak door open and let it shut behind me with a solid thud, cutting off Owen's protests.

The room smelled of old paper and stale coffee. I knelt in front of the bottom drawer of the metal filing cabinet. My keys jingled as I unlocked the heavy steel mechanism. I pulled out the blue accordion folder. It felt heavy in my hands. Three hundred and twelve pages.

Inside sat Daniel's entire immigration history. The Designated School Official authorization letter. His original I-20 forms. Twenty-three days of payroll reversal slips and the university lab attendance logs.

When his student visa status flagged for a coding error three years ago, he panicked. I spent weeks tracking down the registrar, forcing them to correct the system, and compiling this exact folder to keep him from getting deported. I saved his career before it even started.

I flipped open the plastic flap.

The study door swung open. Daniel walked in, a Bluetooth earpiece tucked into his right ear.

"Tell the underwriters we need the valuation by Thursday," Daniel said into the air. He tapped the earpiece, ending the call, and focused on me.

His eyes dropped immediately to the blue accordion folder in my hands.

"Good, you found it," Daniel said. He walked over to the desk and leaned against the edge, crossing his arms. "The IPO lawyers need that file by tomorrow morning. Hand it over."

I kept my grip on the plastic edges. "They need your student record corrections?"

"The SEC requires full disclosure of any past visa discrepancies," Daniel explained without inflection. "Just leave it on the kitchen counter. I will have my assistant courier it to the firm."

He spoke to me like I was a junior intern. Like the past eight years of building his life meant nothing more than administrative support.

"You want me to leave it on the counter," I repeated.

"Yes, Grace. The lawyers are waiting."

I unclasped the folder. I reached inside and pulled out a thin stack of papers from the back section. My joint bank account statements. Our marriage certificate. My adjustment of status receipts.

"What are you doing?" Daniel asked, his brow furrowing.

I placed my personal documents on the desk. Then I closed the blue folder, snapped the elastic band in place, and dropped it into my leather briefcase.

I spun the brass combination dials on the lock.

"Grace," Daniel said, stepping closer. "I told you to leave the folder on the counter."

"I heard you."

"Then why did you lock it in your bag?"

"Because you need it," I said, meeting his gaze. "And I am no longer providing free legal assistance to this family."

Daniel let out a short, dismissive laugh. "Are you throwing a tantrum over the seating chart? Owen already explained the media optics to you."

"Owen just submitted an affidavit to USCIS claiming our marriage is a fraud."

Daniel did not flinch. His expression remained neutral, as if we were discussing a minor accounting error. "It clears my background for the board. You can reapply under a work visa. I will even pay the filing fee."

"You let your seventeen-year-old son perjure himself for your stock options."

"He did not perjure himself. He optimized our legal standing."

"Optimized," I said, the word tasting bitter on my tongue. "You realize lying to immigration is a federal offense, right?"

"Nobody is going to investigate a tech CEO a week before his IPO," Daniel said, waving a hand in the air. "The board investors want a clean slate. A pending family sponsorship looks like a liability. I am just trimming the fat."

"I am your wife."

"You are a partner in this venture," Daniel corrected. "And right now, the venture needs you to step aside. Now open the briefcase."

"No."

Daniel dropped his arms to his sides. His jaw tightened. "Stop playing games, Grace. I need those lab attendance logs to prove my student status was valid. If the lawyers do not get them, the SEC might delay the public offering."

"Then you better hope the university still has copies."

"I do not have time to request copies!" Daniel raised his voice, the calm facade finally cracking. "The filing deadline is Friday. Give me the folder."

"You threw me to the immigration wolves to secure your public profile," I said, picking up my briefcase by the leather handle. "Your legal problems are no longer my concern."

"I built this company from nothing," Daniel snapped, pointing a finger at my chest. "I am not letting your emotional breakdown ruin my valuation."

"You built it in the garage while I paid the mortgage," I shot back. "I bought the groceries. I paid Owen's tuition. I compiled every single page in this blue folder to save you from deportation three years ago. And tonight, you cropped me out of the photos and tried to deport me."

"It is just business."

"Then treat this like business," I said. "I have leverage. You want it. Figure out a better offer."

My phone buzzed in my pocket, emitting a sharp, continuous vibration. I pulled it out.

A text message from Maya glowed on the lock screen. She had attached a screenshot from the USCIS portal.

They consolidated the files, Maya wrote. The father-son affidavits are linked to your case number now.

I read the text twice. They had really done it. They had written their lies into my permanent record.

Before I could reply, another notification popped up, overlapping Maya's message. A bright red calendar alert from the federal immigration system took over the screen.

Daniel leaned over my shoulder to read the display.

The bold text flashed against the glass: Mandatory Appointment: Marriage Fraud Review. Tomorrow, 9:00 AM.

I gripped the phone, my knuckles turning white against the plastic case.

Daniel straightened his posture and adjusted his glasses.

"Make sure you leave my blue folder first," he said.
