Chapter 1

I paid the rent when Daniel was an F-1 student with one suitcase and a nine-year-old son.

I packed Owen's lunches, covered $186,400 in private-school tuition, and used my severance to buy Daniel's first servers.

Thirteen years later, his company was preparing a $1.8 billion IPO.

There was no seat for me in the founder photograph.

Instead, Daniel placed an immigration complaint beside my cold dinner.

Owen had signed it too.

The boy who called me Mom whenever tuition was due told the government our marriage had always been fake.

Seventy-two hours later, I left America with one blue accordion file.

In Toronto, Daniel's largest competitor offered me eighteen percent and my own name on the door.

Then his IPO lawyers discovered a twenty-three-day gap in his student record.

Only my file could prove he had never worked illegally.

Daniel called me at midnight.

“Grace, tell me what it costs to bring my wife home.”

“You cannot afford the wife,” I said. “Ask for my hourly rate.”

I reheated the beef stew for the third time that night and set the porcelain bowl back on the dining table.

"Move the frame to the left, Dad," Owen said, tapping his phone screen. "The lighting for the IPO celebration photos is better if you stand next to the podium. Just you and me."

Daniel adjusted his glasses, leaning over our son's shoulder to inspect the screen. "Make sure the photographer captures the company logo behind us. We need that shot for the Wall Street Journal."

Neither of them looked at the food. Neither of them looked at me.

I pulled out my chair. The wood scraped loudly against the floorboards, a harsh sound that finally made Owen glance up.

"Owen," I said, pointing to the digital seating chart glowing on his tablet. "Why is my name listed under Staff Seating?"

My seventeen-year-old son frowned, already annoyed by the interruption. He scrolled through a list of names with a quick flick of his thumb.

"It makes more sense," Owen said. "You're handling the catering coordination anyway. You need to be close to the kitchen doors."

"I am your mother."

"The Family Seating section is just for the executive board and major investors," Owen replied, returning his attention to the photo layout.

"I am his wife," I said, shifting my gaze to Daniel.

Daniel picked up his fork, finally acknowledging the meal I had spent two hours preparing. He speared a piece of carrot and held it suspended over his plate.

"Grace, don't make this a thing," Daniel said. "Owen is just optimizing the layout for the press. The media wants to see the founders and the key players. We can't have the front row cluttered."

"Cluttered?" My fingers tightened around the edge of the table. "I paid for the first servers in your garage. I covered the mortgage while you went six months without a salary. I raised your son while you chased investors across three time zones. And now I am clutter?"

Owen exhaled through his nose. "This is exactly why Dad didn't want to discuss the seating chart with you."

Daniel set down his fork. "This is an IPO event, Grace, not a family anniversary. Every seat has a strategic purpose."

"So does every person, apparently."

The stew had stopped steaming. A thin skin of fat gathered along the rim of Daniel's bowl, but he looked past it toward the tablet in Owen's hands.

"Put Grace near the service corridor," he said. "That way, if something goes wrong with catering, she can handle it without crossing the camera line."

Owen dragged my name to the bottom of the chart. STAFF SEATING — TABLE 19.

Eight years reduced to a gray rectangle beside the kitchen doors.

I pushed my chair back and stood. "Find someone else to manage your celebration."

Daniel's expression tightened. "You already confirmed the vendors."

"And you already confirmed I was family."

"Don't be melodramatic." He reached beneath the tablet and pulled out a thick packet I had not noticed before. A yellow tab marked SIGNATURE protruded from the final page. "If you want to help, finish this tonight. Legal needs it before the board call tomorrow morning."

I did not take the packet. "What is it?"

"A routine compliance declaration."

Owen slid it across the table. The cover bore the letterhead of Daniel's immigration counsel, followed by a title that made the back of my neck prickle: DECLARATION REGARDING MARITAL INTENT AND RESIDENCY INQUIRIES.

"This has nothing to do with the IPO seating chart," I said.

"It has everything to do with the IPO," Daniel replied. "The underwriters want a clean record. You sign, legal closes the file, and we all move on."

I flipped to the last page. The declaration claimed that my questions about permanent residency had been frequent, insistent, and unrelated to the life Daniel and I had built together. In the appendix, someone had reduced eight years of conversations to a neat list of dates.

March 14. April 2. October 12.

Not one entry mentioned what else had happened on those days.

Owen uncapped a ballpoint pen and placed it beside my hand. "It is straightforward. Sign at the tab."

Daniel lifted his fork again, as if the matter were settled. "Don't turn another administrative detail into a family crisis."

I picked up the pen, then looked from my husband to the boy I had raised. Neither of them seemed to notice that my bowl was empty.
