Chapter 3

"The death certificate is signed," Eleanor announced, tossing a heavy manila folder onto the sterile metal table between us. "You officially expired at 9:14 a.m."

I stared at the thick beige envelope. I sat in a private recovery room at the Crestview Convalescent Center, thirty miles from the hospital where I supposedly drew my last breath.

"Did the cash clear?" I asked, my voice scraping my dry throat.

"Fifty thousand," Eleanor confirmed. She pulled out a metal chair and sat, crossing her legs. "The facility director asked zero questions. You are registered under the alias Clara Reed. The room has no cameras, and the staff only comes in when you press the call button."

"And Daniel?"

Eleanor reached into her leather tote bag and withdrew a sleek silver tablet. She slid it across the tabletop, the metal scraping against the surface.

"My private investigator tapped into the hospital's security feed right before the attending physician delivered the news," she explained. "You need to see this."

I tapped the screen. The video buffered for a second before displaying my empty ICU bed. Daniel stood near the window, his arms crossed over his chest. He wore a crisp navy suit, looking more like he was preparing for a board meeting than a vigil.

The door swung open. Dr. Aris stepped inside, his expression grave.

"Mr. Crane," the doctor began, his tone quiet. "I am so sorry. Her heart stopped. We tried to resuscitate, but the trauma was too severe."

Daniel’s reaction was instantaneous. His knees buckled slightly. He grabbed the windowsill for support, bowing his head.

"No," Daniel choked out. "No, not Vivian. Please tell me you're wrong."

He covered his face with both hands. His shoulders shook in a flawless, rhythmic display of devastation. If I hadn't known he sabotaged my seatbelt, I would have believed him. My jaw tightened, the muscles aching as I ground my teeth together.

"Is there anything else we could have done?" Daniel asked, looking up with perfectly manufactured desperation.

"We did everything medically possible," Dr. Aris murmured, placing a sympathetic hand on Daniel’s shoulder. "Take all the time you need."

The doctor exited the room to give the grieving widower privacy. The heavy wooden door clicked shut.

Daniel dropped his hands. His face was entirely dry. The trembling in his shoulders vanished, replaced by a rigid, upright posture. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his phone.

I leaned closer to the tablet, my fingernails digging into the table edge.

Daniel swiped the screen and held the device to his ear.

"Grace," he said. His voice held no trace of the weeping husband from ten seconds ago. "It’s done. The doctor just called it."

A pause stretched as my sister spoke on the other end. I couldn't hear her words, but Daniel’s mouth curled into a faint smile.

"I know," he replied. "I'll be home tonight. We can finally pop that champagne."

He ended the call without another word. I didn't blink. I didn't let myself look away.

Daniel dialed a second number. He tapped his leather shoe against the linoleum floor, impatient.

"Jim," Daniel barked. "Yeah, it’s Daniel Crane. I need to initiate the claim on Vivian's life insurance policy."

He paced the length of the empty bed.

"Yes, she passed this morning," Daniel continued, feigning a slight tremor in his voice for the broker. "I want the paperwork expedited. Direct deposit into the joint checking account. Email me the forms."

He hung up and shoved the phone back into his pocket.

"He didn't even wait ten minutes," Eleanor noted, her tone laced with disgust.

"He's been waiting for this payout for months," I replied, my gaze fixed on the screen. "Keep watching."

The door to the hospital room opened again. Mia rushed inside.

My daughter wore her cheerleading uniform, her blonde ponytail messy. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the empty bed.

"Dad?" Mia asked, her voice trembling.

"She's gone, sweetheart," Daniel said, stepping forward to wrap his arms around her.

Mia buried her face in his chest. A loud, gut-wrenching sob tore from her throat. My chest constricted. My eighteen-year-old girl. I raised a hand toward the screen, my fingers hovering over her pixelated image. She was crying. Real, ragged tears.

"It's okay, Mia," Daniel hushed her, stroking her hair. "We're going to be okay."

Mia pulled back, wiping her mascara-stained cheeks with the back of her hand. She sniffled, her chest heaving.

"Is Aunt Grace coming to pick us up?" she asked.

"She's waiting at the house," Daniel answered. "She's clearing out the master bathroom so she has more space to help us organize."

Mia nodded, taking a deep breath. She looked at the empty mattress, then up at her father.

"What about the funeral?" Mia asked. "Are we doing an open casket?"

"No," Daniel said quickly. "The injuries from the crash were too severe. We'll do a closed casket service on Sunday."

"Okay," Mia said. She tilted her head, her tears stopping completely. "Dad?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Since Mom is... gone," Mia said, her voice steadying into a casual drawl. "Can I have her car? The Audi is just going to sit in the garage anyway."

My hand dropped from the screen. The tight knot in my chest unraveled, leaving behind a cold, hollow cavern.

"We'll talk about the car later," Daniel said, though he offered a small, approving nod. "Let's go sign the release forms."

They walked out of the room together. The video feed cut to static.

Silence filled my private recovery room. The hum of the air conditioning unit suddenly sounded deafening.

"Vivian?" Eleanor asked quietly.

I sat perfectly still. For the past nine days, a small, stubborn ember of hope had burned in my chest. A desperate wish that Mia was just acting out, that Daniel had made a terrible mistake in a moment of panic.

That ember died. The last warm thing inside me went cold, freezing over into something sharp and absolute.

I pushed the tablet away and reached for the thick stack of financial transfer documents Eleanor had left beside it.

"Good," I said to the empty room. "Now I don't have to feel guilty."

I uncapped the black fountain pen and signed my dead name on the dotted line, officially erasing every cent of Daniel's wealth.
