The Wife Swap Contract
Chapter 1
I knew something was wrong the moment Adrian's Bentley pulled up to the high-rise I'd never seen before. His hand rested possessively on my knee, thumb making small circles against the silk of my dress—a gesture that once made me feel cherished but now felt like the prelude to something sinister.
"You look beautiful tonight," he said, his voice carrying that practiced smoothness that successful men cultivate. "I have something special planned."
I smiled reflexively, the perfect trophy wife response I'd perfected over three years of marriage. "What's the occasion?"
"A new chapter in our marriage," Adrian replied, his dark eyes revealing nothing as the valet opened my door.
The elevator ride to the penthouse was silent, my stomach knotting with each ascending floor. When the doors opened, I stepped into opulence that even I—accustomed to Adrian's wealth—found excessive. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over gathered couples, all dripping with designer labels and jewelry worth more than most people's homes.
I recognized some faces from charity galas and business dinners. Marcus, Adrian's closest friend, approached with a champagne flute for each of us, his wife Isabella trailing behind him like a sleek panther.
"The guests of honor have arrived," Marcus announced, clinking his glass against Adrian's.
Before I could ask what he meant, Adrian's arm tightened around my waist. He raised his voice to address the room.
"Tonight begins a new chapter in our marriage," he announced, echoing his earlier words. Then came the blow: "Sophia will be swapping with Marcus's wife Isabella for the next month."
The room went silent. My champagne glass nearly slipped from my fingers as the words registered.
"What?" I whispered, searching his face for any sign this was an elaborate joke.
Adrian's smile didn't reach his eyes. "It's time you participated more actively in building our future."
I set my glass down with trembling fingers and turned toward the elevator. "I'm leaving."
Adrian caught my arm, his grip firm but careful not to leave marks. Always careful about appearances.
"This is a members-only club," he explained quietly, his lips near my ear. "Elite couples engage in relationship enhancement exercises. Refusing would damage my business relationships—and our social standing."
"I don't care about your business relationships," I hissed.
"You should," he countered. "Remember our prenuptial agreement? The one that leaves you with nothing if you fail to fulfill your wifely duties?"
A chill ran through me. The prenup. The one I'd signed when I was still recovering from what Adrian had called a "traumatic accident" that had wiped away my memories. I'd been so grateful for his care, so dependent on him while rebuilding my life from scratch.
A tall, charismatic man approached—Vincent, as I would soon learn—clapping his hands for attention.
"Welcome to our newest participants," he announced. "Let's review the rules for our newcomers."
The orientation that followed felt like a nightmare. Weekly filmed "progress videos" to be evaluated by members. Mandatory group activities. Performance ratings. My horror mounted as Vincent activated a massive screen displaying explicit highlights from previous sessions.
"Sign here," Adrian instructed, sliding papers before me as Vincent concluded his presentation.
I stared at the participation agreement, my hand frozen.
"Sign it, Sophia," Adrian repeated, his voice low with warning.
I signed, my signature a trembling scrawl.
What followed was a blur of introductions and champagne I couldn't taste. Then Adrian was leading me down a hallway, Isabella and Marcus behind us. We entered a room dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city's glittering skyline.
"Time to begin," Adrian said, turning to Isabella and pulling her into a kiss.
I stood frozen as my husband's hands moved over another woman's body. Marcus approached from behind, his breath hot on my neck.
"Don't worry," he whispered. "Everyone's nervous their first time."
His hands gripped my hips, positioning me against the cold glass window. As he took me roughly, I caught glimpses of office buildings opposite us, wondering with horror if anyone could see.
Something strange happened then. As Marcus moved against me, my body seemed to remember things my mind did not. My hands found leverage points, my hips moved with practiced precision, momentarily giving me control. For a flashing second, I felt powerful, dominant—like I'd done this before, but differently. Like I'd been the one in charge.
The feeling vanished as quickly as it came, leaving me confused and ashamed as Marcus finished. But something had awakened inside me—something that didn't feel like the submissive wife Adrian had shaped over three years.
Something that felt like... me.
