Chapter 4

Adrian didn't notice it immediately. At first, everything felt... normal. Too normal.

Vanessa moved through the house like she belonged there, her presence effortless, her confidence untouched. By morning, she had already rearranged parts of the living room, replacing Elena's simple decor with sharper, more modern pieces.

It irritated Adrian more than he expected. Not because he cared about the furniture but because it felt like something was being erased too quickly. Still, he said nothing. By mid-morning, he was at the office and that was when the first crack appeared.

"Sir, the 10 a.m. meeting has been postponed."

Adrian didn't look up from his desk "Postponed?" he repeated. "By who?"

His assistant hesitated. "That's the strange part, sir. The board sent a notice early this morning. They said the meeting would be rescheduled under... new directives."

Adrian frowned. "New directives?"

"Yes, sir."

Something about that didn't sit right.

"Fine," he said shortly. "Reschedule it. I'll handle it later." But as the door closed behind her, a flicker of unease settled in his chest. The board didn't make decisions without informing him. Not like this. Never like this.

An hour later, his phone rang. "Adrian, we have a problem." It was Marcus, his financial officer.

Adrian leaned back in his chair. "What kind of problem?"

There was a pause. "The kind you need to see for yourself."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Stop being dramatic and explain."

"Our accounts," Marcus said carefully. "Some of them have been... frozen."

Silence.

Adrian's grip on the phone tightened. "That's not possible."

"I thought so too," Marcus replied. "But I've checked twice. Major transactions are being blocked. We don't have full access anymore."

Adrian stood abruptly. "Who authorized this?" "That's just it," Marcus said. "The authorization came from the top."

Adrian's expression darkened. "I am the top."

Another pause.

"Apparently," Marcus said slowly, "you're not the only one."

Across the city, Elena sat at the head of a long conference table. Men and women in tailored suits filled the room, their attention fixed entirely on her. Not one of them questioned her presence and not one of them challenged her authority.

"Proceed," she said calmly.

A file was slid across the table toward her. "All major accounts have been secured," one of the executives reported. "Access has been restricted as instructed."

Elena flipped through the documents with quiet precision. "And Mr. Adrian Carter?" she asked.

"He has not been informed of the full situation," the man replied. "Only partial restrictions have been applied so far."

"Good." Elena closed the file. "Let him feel it slowly."

A few people exchanged brief glances. Not out of doubt but out of understanding. This wasn't just business, this was strategy.

"Next," Elena continued, "I want a complete review of all contracts signed under his authority in the last twelve months."

"Yes, ma'am."

Her expression didn't change but her eyes sharpened slightly. Because that timeline mattered. A year. The same year he had betrayed her. Coincidence? She didn't believe in those.

Back at the office, Adrian stormed into the conference room. "Explain this."

The room fell silent as he dropped a stack of printed reports onto the table. Board members exchanged uneasy looks.

"We were going to inform you," one of them began carefully.

"When?" Adrian snapped. "After my company collapses?"

"It's not your company." The words were quiet, but they hit like a bullet.

Adrian turned sharply.

"Excuse me?"

The older man at the end of the table adjusted his glasses, his expression calm. "You've been operating under that assumption," he said. "But legally... things are more complicated."

Adrian felt something cold settle in his chest. "Speak clearly."

The man nodded. "As of this morning, majority control has been exercised by the primary shareholder."

Adrian's mind raced. "That's impossible. I hold-"

"No," the man interrupted gently. "You don't.

The room seemed to close in around him.

"Then who does?" Adrian demanded. But even as he asked-A strange, unwelcome thought began to form. A name. A possibility he hadn't considered. Wouldn't consider. Couldn't.

That evening, Vanessa sat in the living room, scrolling through her phone. "Adrian, you need to see this."

He barely looked up. "Not now."

"No," she said, her tone sharper this time. "Now." Something in her voice made him pause.

He walked over, irritation already building. "What is it?"

Vanessa turned the screen toward him. A headline stared back. "Carter Holdings Announces Return of Acting Executive Director."

Adrian frowned. "That's not possible," he muttered. He reached for the phone, his eyes scanning quickly. Then-He froze. Because right beneath the headline...Was a photograph. Clear. Undeniable.

Elena. Standing in front of the company's headquarters. Poised. Composed. Powerful.

Vanessa's grip on the phone tightened slightly. "Adrian..." she said slowly.

But he didn't respond. Couldn't. Because for the first time since Elena walked out-He understood.

This wasn't a woman who had nowhere to go. This wasn't someone he could replace. This wasn't someone he had control over. This was-A mistake. And as the reality sank in- A single, terrifying question filled his mind:

What exactly had he just lost?

On the seventh anniversary of my marriage, I, Clara Hart, received two "gifts." One was an urgent alert from the embassy-armed conflict in Arkania was imminent, and all citizens were advised to evacuate immediately. The other was a message from my husband, Adrian Foster, "Pack your things. Wait for me downstairs. Ten minutes." I quickly packed an emergency kit and rushed downstairs. People around me were already evacuating in a panic, yet Adrian was nowhere to be seen. I called him, my voice trembling, only to be met with a cold, clipped response. "The car's packed with confidential company documents. There's no room left. Sophie has a severe fear of war. I need to get her out first." My blood ran cold. "What about me?" I asked, barely believing what I was hearing. Adrian clicked his tongue impatiently. "Clara, stop being so dramatic. Just take the embassy bus. It's the same." Explosions thundered in the distance, shattering everything I had believed in over the past seven years. Whatever love had once existed between us crumbled to dust. I stopped waiting. Slinging the emergency pack over my shoulder, I turned and walked away into the chaos of war.
