Chapter 2

I spent the first twenty-four hours mapping the limits of my cage.

Using the rigid aluminum backing from the protein bar packaging, I attacked the seams of the door lock. The metal foil tore into shreds, slicing my thumbs until blood smeared the steel plate. When that failed, I stripped off my blouse and hurled it upward, snagging it across the camera lens.

Twenty minutes later, a vent near the ceiling hissed, releasing an odorless burst of pressurized air that blew the silk down like a dead leaf.

I took the edge of the cot’s metal frame and carved a line into the plaster beside the sink.

*Day one.*

As I pressed my ear against the north wall, the quiet revealed its architecture. I could hear the faint chimes of the grandfather clock out in the hallway. I could hear Adrian’s heavy dress shoes crossing the study floorboards above. Yet when I pounded my fists against the door and screamed his name until my vocal cords bled raw, my voice died in the air, swallowed by heavy acoustic dampening.

The room was engineered to let the world in, but keep me entirely silenced.

At noon on the second day, the slot clattered open.

Adrian peered through the mesh, his hazel eyes assessing the untouched foil wrappers on the concrete floor.

"A hunger strike?" he asked, his tone mocking. "I didn't think a Rowan stooped to self-pity."

"Let me out, Adrian," I croaked, my throat dry. "Every hour I'm missing makes your story harder to sell."

"Nobody is asking questions, Camille." He held a paper bowl of warm soup in front of the slot, letting the steam drift toward the mesh before setting it down on the study desk out of view. "When you're ready to stop acting like an obstinate brat, you can eat. Until then, starve."

The hatch snapped shut.

By morning, the hunger twisted my stomach into knots, but I refused to touch the remaining protein bars. I sat on the cot with my knees pulled to my chest, staring at the blank metal door.

The heavy deadbolt clicked at three in the afternoon.

The steel door swung outward, and Adrian stepped inside. He had rolled his shirtsleeves to the elbows, carrying a heavy chrome band attached to an anchor chain.

I scrambled back against the wall, but dehydration had slowed my reflexes. He lunged across the narrow space, grabbing my wrists with one hand and slamming me down against the thin mattress.

"Get off me!" I kicked, thrashing my hips to dislodge his weight.

"Stop squirming," he snarled.

He pinned my upper body with his forearm against my throat, cutting off my air until my vision went dark at the edges. With his free hand, he yanked at my trousers, ripping the zipper down and stripping them off my legs along with my underwear.

He threw the clothing into the corner and dragged my right leg toward the floor anchor.

A heavy steel cuff snapped around my ankle with a sharp, heavy click. The lock turned. The cold metal bit straight into my skin, allowing me barely three feet of slack between the cot and the toilet.

Adrian stood over me, straightening his collar while I gasped for oxygen on the mattress.

"Tell me you love me," he said, staring down at my bare legs. "Say the words, Camille. Admit you need your husband, and maybe I'll unlock that chain."

I stared up at the ceiling, keeping my jaw locked tight. I didn't blink. I didn't look at him.

"You stubborn fucking bitch," he spat, his composure cracking. "You still think you're better than me, don't you? Even like this."

He unbuckled his belt, the leather whipping through the loops with a sharp snap. He shoved his slacks down to his knees, his erection already hard and thick. He grabbed both of my thighs, wrenching them apart until my hip joints ached against the chain's tension.

"Look at me," he commanded, driving his hand between my legs, rubbing two fingers roughly over my dry, unyielding cunt. "Look at what belongs to me."

I turned my face toward the wall.

He let out a low curse and shoved his cock straight into my dry pussy with a brutal, tearing thrust. The friction burned like raw fire, forcing a sharp cry from my throat before I could bite it down.

"Fuck," Adrian groaned, grabbing my hips and pounding his weight into me. "You're going to learn how to open up for me again. I'm your fucking husband."

He fucked me without rhythm, slamming his pelvis against my pubic bone over and over. Every thrust drove my shoulders hard into the wall behind the cot. He buried his fingers into the flesh of my waist, bruising the bone, grunting with each deep, furious stroke.

"Say my name, Camille," he panted, his breath hot and stale against my cheek. "Say you want this cock."

I stared at the tally mark on the plaster wall, counting the seconds in silence while he pumped his hips faster, desperate to draw a moan, a plea, anything from my lips. Finding none, he drove in one final, punishing time and came with a guttural shudder, his warm come spilling out over my thighs.

He pulled out, leaving me dripping on the stained sheets.

"You'll learn," he said, zipping his trousers. "Sooner or later."

He walked out and locked the door behind him.

An hour later, the muffled sound of front-door chimes echoed through the safe room's vent. Footsteps clicked along the hallway outside, followed by the soft, cultured voice of Dr. Corinne Hale.

"Adrian," she murmured, her voice carrying cleanly through the acoustic panels. "I came as soon as you texted. How are your symptoms?"

"Managing," Adrian replied from the study desk just beyond the steel partition. "The stress Camille caused before her departure triggered another manic spike. I need your official assessment for the records."

"Of course," Corinne said, paper rustling between them. "I brought the clinical files. Let's head upstairs."

The hours dragged on into the dark.

Around midnight, the rhythmic creaking of the master bedroom began directly above my head.

The floor joists vibrated with every heavy slam of the bedframe. Corinne's high, breathy moans drifted down through the ventilation shaft with sickening clarity, sharp and uninhibited.

"Adrian... oh God, yes," Corinne gasped, her voice loud enough to penetrate every corner of my cell. "Fuck me harder. Does your little Camille ever take it this deep?"

Adrian's deep laugh resonated through the ceiling boards. "Camille is frigid. She doesn't have a clue what a real man needs. Say her name, Corinne. Tell me she's nothing compared to you."

"Camille is a fucking ghost," Corinne moaned loudly, slapping sounds echoing between their bare skin. "She couldn't keep you... she's nothing, Adrian... fuck, harder!"

I lay on the cot, my chained ankle throbbing with a dull ache, listening to them use my name as their filthy foreplay.

When the bed finally stopped rocking, Corinne let out a satisfied sigh. A lighter clicked.

"Did you file the revised intake forms?" Adrian asked, his voice returning to its normal business tone.

"Already processed through my private clinic," Corinne answered smoothly, exhaling smoke. "I documented three months of escalating paranoid psychosis, severe manic episodes, and unprovoked aggression toward you. If your father-in-law or the police ever question her disappearance, the clinical paper trail is airtight."

"Good," Adrian murmured. "A runaway mental patient who abandoned her family in the middle of a manic break won't have any credibility if she ever surfaces."

"She won't surface unless you allow it," Corinne chuckled softly. "You're completely protected, darling."

Down in the dark, a wave of cold, greasy nausea rose in my throat, choking the breath from my chest until I had to press my forehead against the concrete floor to keep from throwing up.
