Chapter 3

Hannah stood in front of the full-length mirror in her apartment. She had chosen a simple, tailored black dress that fell just below her knees. She fastened her own pearl earrings-a gift from her late mother-ignoring the velvet boxes of diamonds Branden had given her. She applied a slightly brighter lipstick to mask the sickly pallor of her skin.

Her phone rang. It was Julian.

"Hannah, I'm so sorry, I got held up at a site inspection," Julian said, sounding frantic. "I asked Aurelio to swing by and pick you up. He should be downstairs any minute."

Hannah frowned. "Julian, I can just take a cab. I don't want to bother your friend."

"It's already done! He's a great guy, you'll see. See you at the restaurant!" Julian hung up before she could protest.

Hannah grabbed her clutch and took the elevator down to the lobby.

A sleek, black Maybach was idling by the curb. As she approached, the driver quickly stepped out and opened the rear door for her.

Hannah slid into the backseat. The interior was dimly lit, smelling faintly of expensive leather and a crisp, masculine cedarwood scent.

A man was sitting in the other corner, the glow of a tablet illuminating his face. He was tall, his broad shoulders filling the space. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that screams quiet wealth.

He looked up.

Hannah's breath caught slightly. His face was striking-sharp jawline, high cheekbones, and eyes so dark and deep they looked like obsidian. There was a heavy, intimidating aura around him, a natural authority that commanded the space.

This was Aurelio Schwartz.

Aurelio's dark eyes locked onto her face. For a fraction of a second, Hannah thought she saw a flicker of intense emotion cross his features, but it vanished so quickly she assumed she had imagined it. His expression returned to a mask of cool indifference.

"Hello," Hannah said, keeping her voice polite. "I'm Hannah Compton, Julian's cousin. Thank you for going out of your way."

"Aurelio Schwartz," his voice was a low, resonant baritone that vibrated in the quiet car. "Julian speaks highly of you."

The car pulled smoothly into the evening traffic. The silence between them was thick, but not necessarily uncomfortable. Hannah turned her head to look out the window, but she could feel the weight of his gaze on her. He was observing her.

"Julian mentioned you've been dealing with some... complications recently," Aurelio said suddenly, breaking the silence.

Hannah stiffened. Her fingers instinctively curled into her palms. How much did Julian tell him?

"Just making some necessary changes in my life," Hannah replied vaguely.

Aurelio didn't push. He simply nodded, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "If you ever need assistance, you can come to me."

The offer was stated so casually, yet it carried an undeniable weight. Hannah looked at him, puzzled. Why would a billionaire she just met offer her help?

The Maybach descended into the VIP underground parking of an upscale French restaurant. Aurelio stepped out first and held the door for her. His sheer height made Hannah feel small, a rare sensation for her.

They walked into the private dining room where Julian was already waiting, waving them over.

Throughout the dinner, Hannah learned just how powerful Aurelio Schwartz was. He wasn't just a friend of Julian's; he was a titan in the financial sector, a man who could bankrupt a company with a single phone call. Yet, he spoke little, mostly listening to Julian's animated stories.

Halfway through the meal, Julian, flushed with wine, started talking about their family history.

"You know, Aurelio, Hannah's uncle, Augustine Frye, was a legend in our family. Toughest guy I ever knew," Julian laughed.

Aurelio slowly lowered his wine glass. The casual atmosphere in the room instantly evaporated. He turned his dark eyes entirely onto Hannah.

"Augustine Frye," Aurelio repeated, his voice dropping an octave. "He was your uncle?"

Hannah nodded, a wave of sadness washing over her. "Yes. He passed away many years ago."

Aurelio stared at her. The intensity in his gaze made Hannah's heart skip a beat.

"I owe him my life," Aurelio said quietly.

Julian stopped laughing. Hannah froze.

"Many years ago, I was involved in an incident," Aurelio continued, his eyes never leaving Hannah's. "I was trapped. Your uncle pulled me out. He saved me, and he never asked for a single thing in return."

Hannah remembered her uncle mentioning a young boy he had pulled from a burning vehicle, but he had always brushed it off as nothing.

"I have carried that debt for a long time," Aurelio said, leaning forward slightly. "Finding you here... it gives me a chance to repay it."

Hannah felt a lump form in her throat. "Mr. Schwartz, my uncle did what anyone would do. You don't owe me anything."

"I decide what I owe," Aurelio said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "This isn't a transaction, Hannah. It is a promise. You have one favor. Anything you want, anything you need, you ask me, and it will be done."

Julian chimed in, trying to lighten the mood. "Come on, Hannah, don't be stubborn. Having Aurelio Schwartz owe you a favor is like holding a winning lottery ticket!"

Hannah looked at Aurelio. She saw no pity in his eyes, only absolute sincerity and a terrifying kind of power. She was a woman dying of cancer, trying to divorce a billionaire, about to face a war. She needed allies.

But she also had her pride.

"Thank you, Aurelio," Hannah said softly. "If the day comes when I truly have no other options, I will remember your promise."

Aurelio's lips twitched into the ghost of a smile. He respected her answer.

After dinner, Aurelio insisted on having his driver take Hannah home.

The ride back was quiet. When the car pulled up to her apartment building, Hannah stepped out.

Aurelio rolled down his window. The streetlights cast shadows across his sharp features.

"Hannah," he called out.

She turned back.

"Remember what I said," Aurelio told her. His eyes searched her face for a long moment, taking in the faint shadows beneath her eyes and the pale translucence of her skin. "Julian mentioned you've been through a lot lately. Take care of yourself."

Hannah's breath hitched. His gaze was so piercing it felt as though he could see right through her carefully constructed armor, straight to the secrets she was hiding.

Before she could speak, the tinted window rolled up, and the Maybach glided away into the night.

Hannah stood on the sidewalk, the cool wind biting through her coat. She wrapped her arms around herself, her mind racing. Aurelio Schwartz was a dangerous man to know, but tonight, for the first time in a long time, she felt like she wasn't entirely alone.
