Chapter 5

Present Day

Zara's POV

A soft beeping. Cold sheets. The scent of antiseptic. I stirred my eyes slowly, fluttering open to fluorescent lights that stung.

“Hello, ma’am, can you hear me?” A voice echoed in my head, muffled, like it was trying to reach me through water. A nurse’s blurred figure came into view- dressed in pale blue scrubs, hair pulled back, clipboard in hand, eyes kind but cautious.

“Yes… I can”, I groaned in pain, my throat dry, each word escaping slowly.

The nurse smiled faintly, but it didn’t last long. She flipped through the chart in her hand, lips pressed into a nervous line.

“You were rushed here, ma’am, by a man. Thank God he came on time. It could have led to a more serious case, ma’am.” She scanned through a file she held in her hands.

“Why didn’t you treat yourself after the miscarriage, ma’am? Can I meet your husband? Where is he?”. The nurse asked, searching my face for answers I didn’t have.

“Wait—Mis what–?” I rose gently from the bed as I tried to understand what the nurse had just said.

My heart stopped. The room spun slightly.

I blinked fast.

“Are you sure you’re reading my chart, nurse?”. “I was never pregnant–how could I–?”.

The nurse didn’t correct me.

She didn’t have to.

In that single moment, a wave of understanding slammed into me. My eyes widened as I thought back.

I covered my open mouth with my fingers at the sudden realisation of the fact that I had not seen my period for the past month. The unshakable fatigue. The dizziness I had blamed on stress. No. No. No.

This couldn’t be happening.

The nurse hesitated for a moment before finally breaking the silence. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but the result of our examination here shows that you lost your baby two days ago. Your lack of adequate rest and medicine made you dizzy and fatigued, and made you pass out”.

The hospital room fell silent as I slowly moved my shaky hands to my belly, rubbing it back and forth in disbelief that I carried a child who would never get to call me “mummy”. I continued rubbing my aching stomach as though I could conjure a heartbeat, a movement, or a kick that could tell me it wasn’t true.

But there was nothing.

Tears that had been lurking in my eyes now came gushing out uncontrollably.

The nurse held me back the moment I started rubbing my belly harder in a way that could hurt me because in that moment, I didn’t care about myself; I just wanted my baby back.

“Bring back my baby!” I screamed at the nurse.

“P—p—pleaseeeee!” I wrestled with her as she tried to keep me calm and console me, clearly to no avail.

“Arghhhhhh!” I thundered in pain.

This time, a figure who looked like the grandfather I hadn’t seen in years rushed into the room.

He was still the handsome grandpa I knew. Stern-looking but kind. In his usual casual wear of a shirt and shorts, he moved closer to me.

“Zara, Zara, my baby,” he brushed my hair, soaked with sweat, aside.

“I’m so sorry,” he continued with teary eyes.

“I’m so sorry it took me this long to show myself to you. But I have been watching over you since you left the mansion two years ago. You were my baby and will always be my baby. I couldn’t leave you by yourself with that Zane.”

“Look at what he has done to you.” He shook his head, regretfully.

Tears ran down my cheeks in torrents. I wept till my lungs no longer knew how to draw breath. It felt as though this was the end of me.

“A man I met outside directed me to you. He said I should give this to you.” He handed me the ticket out of the city that I left in the hotel room.

“Zara, I know you renounced your legacy, but please let me help you out of this mess.” He took my hand close to his chest.

“Go where you can forget about all these and start a new life. You don’t have to live in the shadow of your mistakes.”

“Tell me anything you need, I’d grant it, my dear.” He said.

Wiping the tears away from my red, blazing eye, I said, “I want just one thing”.

“Revenge on the people that did this to me.”

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and I stepped into the penthouse foyer, my heels clicking against the marble floor. Ten years. “Don’t stop,” she whispered. “She won’t come up.” I did. I stopped breathing. Thinking. Existing. The voice came from inside my bedroom—our bedroom. My sanctuary. I stood frozen in the hallway, dinner still warm downstairs, candles flickering in a room that no longer mattered. The scent of truffle butter still clung to my sleeves. Through the door—left carelessly ajar—I saw enough. A woman with auburn hair and wine-colored nails was curled into my husband's side, her lipstick smeared across his throat like a bruise. Her fingers skimmed down his back, possessive, practiced. Oliver moaned softly. A sound I hadn’t heard in months. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I turned. Through the adjoining bathroom, I slipped into the walk-in closet, hiding behind the luxury he insisted I needed. Dresses lined in neat rows. Shoes in pyramids. A fortress of silk and leather and betrayal. I sat down, gripping the hem of my dress, listening. “I don’t know why you’re still stalling,” Lily said, her voice languid and confident. “She’s not stupid, Oliver. She’s suspicious. You said she keeps asking questions.” He sighed. “Let her ask. She won’t do anything. Not until it’s too late.” A beat. “She’s planning something tonight,” he added, almost amused. “Made some kind of fancy dinner. Probably filet again. It’s sweet, in a tragic way.” Lily giggled. “You think she’s figured out we’ve been using her?” “Scarlett sees what she wants to see. She’s desperate. That’s what makes it easy.” There was movement on the bed. Sheets shifting. “She still has no idea about the inheritance?” Lily murmured. “None,” he said. “Her father’s trust releases next month. Once the money hits the accounts, I’ll serve the papers. I’ve already started moving things offshore.” My throat closed. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted blood. So this was what I got from our five-year marriage.

I never expected to discover the truth on such an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. Downtown bustled with its usual energy as I navigated through crowds, shopping bags swinging from my arm. The spring air carried the scent of food carts and fresh flowers, a perfect day for my errands before heading home to prepare dinner for Harrison. That's when I saw them. Across the busy street, partially obscured by passing cars but unmistakable in the afternoon sun, stood my husband. His tall frame and dark hair were as familiar to me as my own reflection. But it was his posture that stopped me cold—the intimate lean of his body toward the woman before him. Kataleya Price. His secretary. I froze mid-step, causing someone to bump into me from behind with a muttered apology I barely registered.

I smoothed my fingers over the delicate lace of the lingerie, a pale blush color that had cost more than I'd ever spent on myself before. Three years of marriage, and Marcus had never seen me in anything like this. Three years of cold shoulders, separate bedrooms, and his constant reminders that his anxiety disorder made physical intimacy impossible. Yet somehow, I still believed this trip could change everything. "This time will be different," I whispered to my reflection in the bedroom mirror, practicing the warm, inviting smile I'd been rehearsing for days. The woman staring back at me looked hopeful, desperate even, with eyes that had grown accustomed to disappointment but refused to accept it. I carefully folded the lingerie between layers of tissue paper and tucked it into my suitcase, alongside the new sundresses and swimsuits I'd purchased for our trip to the Hamptons. Our belated honeymoon. The one Marcus had promised we'd take when he felt "ready." Three years later, and here we were. "You're beautiful," I practiced again, imagining what I might say if—when—Marcus finally looked at me the way a husband should look at his wife.
