Chapter 3

When I opened them again, my gaze drifted toward the cabinet under the sink. Hidden behind a bottle of shampoo—tucked away like a secret I hadn’t been ready to face—was a small box I had bought three days ago but never opened.

A pregnancy test.

My hand trembled as I reached for it.

The box felt impossibly heavy in my palm. My hands shook so badly I almost dropped it. I kept repeating the same words in my head like a prayer; It’s just stress….It’s just stress.

I couldn’t put it off any longer.

I followed the instructions with mechanical precision, my mind numb. Three minutes. The longest three minutes of my life. I paced the bathroom, arms wrapped around myself, refusing to look at the test until the timer on my phone buzzed.

When I finally forced myself to check…

Two pink lines.

Clear. Unmistakable.

I didn’t cry. Not at first. I simply stared, the world tilting beneath my feet. Seven years of loving Adrian Hayes. Countless nights in his arms. Plans for a wedding that was supposed to happen in weeks. And now, hours after watching him propose to another woman on stage, I was carrying his child.

A baby.

Our baby.

The second test gave the same result. Positive. No room for doubt. The room began to spin. I slid down the cold tiled wall until I was sitting on the floor, knees drawn to my chest, the tests clutched in my lap.

I sat on the cold bathroom floor, the two positive pregnancy tests still clutched in my trembling hands. The lines stared back at me—blunt, undeniable proof that everything had changed forever. Tears slipped down my cheeks, silent at first, then coming in ragged sobs that shook my entire body.

Not because I was pregnant.

Because I was pregnant with his baby.

The man who had shattered my world only hours ago. The man who had gotten down on one knee for someone else while I stood in the crowd like a fool. How cruel could life be?

“I’m sorry…” I whispered, my voice cracking.

My hand drifted slowly to my still-flat stomach. The words weren’t for Adrian. They were for the tiny life growing inside me.

“What am I supposed to do now?” I whispered into the empty bathroom. My voice sounded foreign—small and broken.

I stayed there for what felt like hours, thoughts crashing over me in violent waves. How could I tell him? How could I tie him to me with a child after what he had done? I wouldn’t be the woman who trapped a man with a baby. Not after tonight. Not after the public humiliation. I can't …after he chose her.

The sound of the apartment door opening snapped me out of my spiral.

I froze.

Adrian?

Footsteps moved through the living room. I pushed myself up on unsteady legs and stepped out of the bathroom just as Adrian’s assistant, James, rounded the corner carrying a small overnight bag. The same bag Adrian had packed for the gala in case we stayed late.

James stopped short, clearly surprised to see me. “Miss Carter… I didn’t think you’d still be here.”

My heart sank. “Where is he?”

James hesitated, his usual professional mask cracking slightly. “Mr. Hayes hasn’t been home. He’s… at the hospital.”

The words landed like a punch. Of course. He was with Claire. Probably comforting his new fiancée after the dramatic scene I had caused. The image burned behind my eyes—Adrian holding her, reassuring her, while I stood here alone with two pink lines that changed everything.

I didn’t ask for details. I couldn’t bear to hear them.

James shifted uncomfortably, set the bag down, and left with a quiet goodbye. The door clicked shut behind him, leaving me in silence once more.

I moved through the apartment like a ghost. My fingers brushed over the framed photos on the shelves. The couch where we had fallen asleep watching movies. The kitchen island where Adrian always made coffee for me in the mornings, exactly how I liked it. Every corner held a memory. Every inch of this place was soaked in seven years of love I had thought was unbreakable.

I looked down at the pregnancy tests still in my hand.

No.

I wouldn’t tell him. Not now…Maybe not ever. I refused to let him stay out of obligation. I wouldn’t be his mistake he felt forced to fix. This child deserved better than a father who had chosen someone else in front of the entire world.

The decision settled over me like steel.

I finished packing quickly—only what I truly needed. Clothes, important documents, the small amount of cash I had. Everything else I left behind. The photos, The gifts, The life we had built. It all stayed.

By the time the sky began to lighten with the first hints of dawn, I was ready. I took one final look around the penthouse, then walked out, closing the door softly behind me.

The building manager was already at his desk when I reached the lobby. I handed him the keys to the apartment.

“If Adrian comes looking for me…” My voice wavered, but I steadied it. “Tell him I don’t want to be found.”

He nodded solemnly, no questions asked.

I stepped outside into the early morning chill and climbed into the waiting taxi. As it pulled away from the curb, another black car—Adrian’s Maybach—screeched into the building’s driveway. Adrian jumped out, disheveled, his tuxedo jacket missing, panic etched across his face.

He ran inside.

The elevator doors closed just as he reached them.

My taxi merged into the morning traffic and disappeared.

For the first time in seven years, our paths truly separated.
