Chapter 5

"Keep to the shadows by the service exit," I instructed Arthur, adjusting the black silk veil over my face.

The heavy acoustic doors of the grand banquet hall shut behind us, muting the bustling hallway. Inside, the corporate charity gala was in full swing, transformed into a grotesque shrine for a woman who was still breathing.

I leaned my weight onto the custom black-and-gold cane. The solid metal shaft dug into the carpet. My shattered ribs burned against the tight medical binder beneath my dark mourning dress. Every breath required calculation. Every step demanded payment in pain.

"My mother was a fighter," Leo's voice echoed through the massive overhead speakers.

I lifted my chin. My twenty-two-year-old son stood at the center of the illuminated stage. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, gripping the edges of the mahogany podium.

"She built this company from nothing," Leo continued, his voice cracking perfectly on the last syllable. "She sacrificed everything for her family."

He paused, reaching up to wipe a solitary tear from his cheek. The crowd of investors and board members let out a collective murmur of sympathy.

My fingers tightened around the gold handle of my cane. The metal grew warm against my palm. Three weeks ago, he co-signed my DNR order to secure his tuition money. Yesterday, he pawned my mother's heirloom diamond to buy his father's mistress a welcome gift.

"Her passing is a tragedy," Leo said, looking out over the sea of tables. "But she taught me the true value of human life. Her death solidifies my commitment to medicine. I am going to become a surgeon, just like she always wanted. I will spend my life saving others in her honor."

"He stopped attending anatomy labs six months ago," Arthur murmured, standing rigid at my right shoulder.

"I know," I whispered back, my tone flat. "He is using my corpse as a college essay."

On stage, David stepped into the spotlight. He placed a comforting hand on Leo's shoulder, playing the role of the stoic, grieving patriarch. He wore the exact same navy suit from the ambulance parking lot.

"Thank you, son," David said into the microphone. "Your mother would be incredibly proud of the man you are becoming."

David turned to the audience. He swept his gaze across the room, ensuring every major shareholder felt his presence.

"We are all hurting," David announced, his baritone voice smooth and practiced. "Evelyn was the heart of this enterprise. But a heart does not stop beating just because the body fails. It lives on through the blood it pumps into the future."

"That is the worst metaphor I have ever heard," I muttered.

"He paid a PR firm ten thousand dollars to write it," Arthur replied without looking away from the stage.

"To honor Evelyn's legacy," David continued, gesturing to the side of the stage. "We are launching a new initiative. The company is officially injecting five million dollars into the Maternal Memorial and Medical Foundation."

The crowd erupted into polite applause.

"And to spearhead this noble cause," David said, raising his hand, "I am appointing our new Vice President of Operations, Monica."

Monica glided out from the wings. She wore a modest black evening gown, her hair pinned back to project an air of professional mourning. She stepped up to the podium, resting her hand lightly over David's.

Under the harsh stage lights, the antique diamond ring on her right hand threw scattered prisms of light across the front row.

My jaw locked. The muscles in my neck pulled tight.

"Evelyn was more than a boss to me," Monica told the silent room. "She was a mentor. A guiding light. I promise to steward this five million dollar grant with the same fierce dedication she brought to her work every single day."

"They are writing checks on an empty account," Arthur noted, shifting his weight.

"Let them write it," I said, watching Monica smile tragically for the flashing cameras. "The corporate wire transfer fails at noon tomorrow. By the time the bank opens on Monday, that foundation will be bankrupt before it even files its tax paperwork."

"David is already scheduling meetings with the Dubai shipping conglomerate for next week," Arthur added.

"Let him check the server," I replied. "He will find out the Dubai contracts no longer exist."

Monica stepped back, allowing David to take the center position again.

"We have prepared a short video tribute," David announced, pointing toward the massive projector screen descending from the ceiling. "A look back at the woman who gave us everything."

The lights in the banquet hall dimmed. Soft, melancholic piano music began to play through the speakers. A slideshow of my life flashed across the screen. My wedding day. My company launch. My family vacations.

They were consuming my memories as entertainment.

I turned my head slightly toward Arthur. I gave him a single, sharp nod.

"The IT director is currently at the open bar," Arthur said, reading my signal perfectly. "The control room is unguarded."

"Go," I commanded.

"You have the receiver?" he asked.

I tapped the side of my cane. "Patch the audio feed directly to my frequency. Disable their local override."

Arthur adjusted his tie. He slipped away from the wall, blending into the shadows of the service corridor.

I stood alone in the dark, watching my face smile on the fifty-foot screen. In the photo, I was holding a newborn Leo. David stood beside me, looking like a man who actually loved his family. The sheer fiction of it made my stomach turn.

My thumb slid over the smooth gold cap of my cane. Beneath the decorative metal lay a small, recessed button.

Arthur had wired it to the central broadcasting system.

If I pressed it, the melancholic piano music would cut out. The slideshow would vanish. Instead, the speakers would blast the audio recording from the hospice parking lot. The entire room of investors would hear David complaining about the cost of my life support. They would hear him ordering the paramedic to pull the plug. They would hear Leo asking about his trust fund.

It would destroy the memorial instantly. It would ruin David's public image before he even finished his drink.

But David still held my medical proxy. If I revealed I was alive right now, he would drag me into a brutal legal battle over my mental competency. He would freeze the assets I had just hidden.

My thumb hovered directly over the button.

On stage, David leaned over and whispered something into Monica's ear. She let out a soft, inappropriate laugh, quickly covering her mouth with her hand to hide it from the front row.

I pressed my fingernail against the edge of the trigger.

The screen flashed to a photo of our wedding day, and my thumb pushed down on the cold metal.
