Chapter 3

"Push through the heel, Evelyn. Do not look down."

My bare feet hit the linoleum floor, sending a jolt of pure agony up my calves. It felt like walking barefoot over crushed glass. Sweat stung my eyes, blurring my vision. I locked my grip on the parallel steel bars, refusing to let my knees buckle.

"One more step," the therapist urged, hovering near my elbow.

I dragged my right leg forward. My ribs screamed in protest against the tight medical binder wrapped around my torso. I gasped, tasting copper on my tongue, and collapsed onto the padded bench at the end of the track.

"We are done for today," I told the therapist, swiping a coarse towel across my forehead.

A sharp knock rapped against the heavy security door of my private ward.

"You have a visitor," the therapist noted, stepping back toward the medical supply cabinet.

Arthur had promised to send someone. The door swung open, and a man in a rumpled gray suit stepped inside, clutching a thick manila folder under his arm.

"Evelyn Vance?" he asked, shutting the door behind him and scanning the sterile room.

"Just Evelyn now," I said, adjusting my hospital gown over my bruised shoulders. "Are you the investigator?"

"Marcus." He tossed the folder onto the metal table beside my bed. "Arthur paid my retainer. I brought what you asked for."

I gestured for the therapist to leave. Once the heavy door clicked shut, sealing us in the soundproof room, I reached for the folder. My fingers trembled as I flipped the heavy cover open.

"Look at the bank statements first," Marcus instructed, pulling up a plastic chair and sitting backward on it. "David started siphoning funds twenty-four months ago."

I scanned the highlighted rows of numbers. "These are offshore accounts."

"Shell companies," Marcus corrected. "Registered in Delaware, but the money filters down to a private holding firm owned by Monica. He has been funding her lifestyle long before the accident."

"Two years," I muttered. My jaw tightened, grinding my teeth together. Two years of late-night board meetings, sudden business trips, and excuses about market downturns. He was draining Sterling Technology to build her a nest egg.

"He bought her a luxury condo in the city," Marcus added, pointing a calloused finger at a property deed on the left side of the folder. "Paid in cash. Six months ago."

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second. The betrayal layered over my physical pain, creating a toxic burn in my chest.

"Flip to the second section," Marcus said, tapping a yellow tab sticking out from the stack of papers. "That is where it gets messy."

I turned the page. A photocopy of a small, faded receipt sat paperclipped to a bank transfer record. The logo for Gold Star Pawnbrokers sat printed at the top in cheap ink.

My stomach dropped. I recognized the date printed at the top corner.

"Why is this here?" My voice cracked, betraying the steel I tried to maintain.

"Look at the signature at the bottom," Marcus said, his tone flat.

I traced the ink. Leo Sterling.

"I pawned an item there," I told Marcus, my chest tightening with a sudden, suffocating pressure. "My mother's antique diamond ring. It was the only way I could scrape together fifty thousand dollars in cash."

"For what?" Marcus asked.

"Leo's medical school tuition. David claimed our liquid assets were tied up in bad investments. He told me if Leo wanted to go to the summer surgical program, I had to find the money myself."

"So you sold a family heirloom."

"I sacrificed it for my son." I gripped the edges of the paper, my knuckles turning white. "But this receipt shows a redemption. Someone bought it back."

"Your son did," Marcus clarified, leaning closer. "He took the fifty grand you gave him, walked right back into that pawnshop, and bought the ring."

I glared at him, the harsh hospital lights glaring off the glossy paper. "That makes no sense. Why would he buy it back instead of paying his tuition?"

"He never attended the summer program, Evelyn. He dropped those classes."

My pulse hammered against my temples. "Then what did he do with my mother's ring?"

"He gave it away." Marcus rested his elbows on his knees, watching my face closely. "He handed it over as a welcome gift."

"To who?"

"To Monica."

The silence in the room thickened, pressing against my eardrums.

"He knew," I whispered. The realization hit me like a physical blow, sharper than the shattered ribs. "My son knew about the affair."

"He didn't just know," Marcus said. "He helped them hide it. The ring was a peace offering to keep Monica happy while David finalized the divorce papers they were secretly drafting."

My twenty-two-year-old son. The boy I stayed up with during fevers. The boy I gave up my only connection to my dead mother for. He took my sacrifice, walked into a pawnshop, and handed it to the woman sleeping with his father.

"Did Leo get anything else out of this?" I asked, my voice dropping to a hollow echo.

"A brand new sports car," Marcus replied, not blinking. "Registered under Monica's holding firm, but Leo drives it. A reward for keeping his mouth shut."

My fingers curled inward. The receipt crumpled into a tight, jagged ball in my fist. The paper cut into my palm, but I welcomed the sting. It grounded me, keeping the tears of absolute despair at bay. They trampled on my love, weaponized my sacrifice, and laughed while doing it.

"There is one more thing," Marcus said.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a glossy photograph, tossing it onto the metal table next to my clenched fist.

I forced my hand to open. I picked up the photo.

Monica smiled brightly at the camera. She wore a stunning emerald gown, standing beside David in his tailored tuxedo. But my eyes fixed on her right hand, resting proudly on his chest.

The antique diamond ring sparkled under the camera flash.

"She never takes it off," Marcus noted.

I scanned the background of the image. They stood in front of a massive promotional poster. Bold gold letters spelled out the event details.

Sterling Technology Annual Charity Gala.

Tomorrow Night.

"She is wearing my mother's ring to my company's gala," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"They are announcing the new corporate structure tomorrow," Marcus said, standing up and straightening his jacket. "It is her official debut as Vice President."

I stared at the diamond on Monica's finger, the sharp edges of the photograph digging into my thumb.
