Chapter 2

Evelyn's POV

"Did you see the ultrasound?" a nurse whispered, leaning against the nurses' station in the corridor. "The hero's baby is healthy. It's an absolute miracle she carried it this far."

I shoved the VIP room door open. It slammed against the wall, rattling a framed landscape painting.

"Get her out of here," I said, pointing straight at the woman occupying the hospital bed.

Grant stepped between us. He spread his arms wide, blocking my view of Celeste entirely.

"Are you insane, Evelyn?" Grant snapped. "We just spent five years eating scraps and praying for a rescue. Have some basic human decency."

"Decency?" I scoffed. "You brought your pregnant mistress into a VIP suite billed to my household, Grant. She leaves right now, or I call security to escort her out."

Celeste whimpered, pulling the thin white hospital sheet up to her chin. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause trouble for your family."

"Shut up," I told her.

"Don't speak to her like that!" Grant yelled, his face flushing dark red. "She kept me sane. She kept me breathing. You have no idea what we endured on that rock."

"I know exactly what I endured," I fired back, stepping closer to him. "Paying off your millions in debt while you played house on a beach. I sold my parents' home. I worked ninety-hour weeks."

"We made a life out of nothing to survive," Grant argued, his jaw tightening.

"You made a child," I corrected. "While your actual child visited an empty grave every Sunday."

Footsteps pounded down the hallway. Leo barged into the room, his chest heaving. He positioned himself right next to his father, glaring at me.

"Stop screaming at him, Mom!" Leo demanded.

I stared at my sixteen-year-old son. "Leo, this is an adult conversation. Wait outside."

"No," Leo said, his voice cracking. He grabbed Grant's sleeve, gripping the fabric tight. "Dad just got back from hell. He survived out there, and you're punishing him? Why are you acting like this?"

"Leo, this woman is pregnant with his child," I said, keeping my voice as steady as possible. "He abandoned us."

"He didn't abandon us! His ship went down!" Leo shouted, tears spilling over his lower lashes. "He built a shelter. He fought to stay alive for us. And all you care about is who he slept with when he thought he was never coming home?"

"You don't understand the implications of this," I told him.

"I understand you're being a monster," Leo spat.

The hostility in his eyes anchored my feet to the linoleum. My own son, the boy I had raised alone, was looking at me like I was the villain. I opened my mouth to defend myself, to demand respect, but the words died in my throat.

Grant put a heavy hand on Leo's shoulder. "It's okay, buddy. Your mother is just in shock. She doesn't mean it."

I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. I couldn't fight them both. Not today. Not with the press swarming the lobby downstairs, hungry for a public breakdown.

"Fine," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You can bring her to the main house. Temporarily."

"Thank you," Grant said smoothly.

"Don't thank me," I replied, turning my back on them. "Just keep her out of my sight."

That night, the heavy front door of the estate clicked shut. Grant hauled two canvas duffel bags across the foyer marble, heading straight for the east wing guest room.

I stood by the kitchen island. I slapped a thick stack of papers onto the granite counter.

"Put the bags down, Grant. We need to talk."

He dropped the luggage. He walked over, his eyes scanning the bold letters at the top of the page.

"Divorce papers?" Grant chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. He slid the document away from him. "You waste no time."

"You brought a pregnant woman off that chopper," I said. "Did you expect a welcome home party?"

"I expect half of my company back," he countered, leaning over the island. "I founded Mercer Maritime Holdings. My name is on the building."

"Your name was on the bankruptcy filings," I corrected. "I saved it. The board answers to me."

"Arthur called me from the hospital lobby," Grant said, crossing his arms. "He mentioned you cleared the final ten million today. Excellent timing on your part."

"Arthur works for me now."

"Arthur works for the Mercer name," Grant said. He tapped his index finger against the granite. "The media paints me as a miracle. The ultimate survivor. Do you know what happens to Mercer Maritime Holdings' stock if the CEO divorces the national hero the day he returns?"

I narrowed my eyes. "I don't care about the PR."

"You care about the bottom line," Grant said. "The public won't accept you throwing me out. Not when I'm traumatized. Not when I need my family. They will ruin you, Evelyn. Your investors will pull out by morning."

"You have a new family," I said, pointing toward the guest room. "Go be with them."

"Leo needs his father," Grant said. His tone hardened, dropping the victim act completely. "And I'm not leaving this house or my son. Tear those up."

"I will fight you in court," I warned him.

"You will lose," Grant replied. "I'm the victim here. Everyone loves a survivor."

He turned around, picked up Celeste's bags, and disappeared down the hall.

The grandfather clock struck two in the morning.

I sat alone in the mudroom, staring at the pile of gear Grant had dumped by the back door. The smell of saltwater, sweat, and mildew clung to the fabric of his survival gear.

I grabbed the strap of his green waterproof washbag, intending to throw it in the trash.

The canvas felt unusually thick at the bottom.

I traced my fingers along the seam. A hidden zipper sat tucked beneath a flap of frayed nylon.

I pulled it open.

Inside the secret compartment lay a pristine, plastic bottle.

I pulled it out and held it up to the overhead light.

Imported folic acid tablets.

I rotated the bottle, my thumb brushing over the printed label.

The manufacturing date stamped on the plastic read December, eight months ago.
