The Surgery Heist
Chapter 3
"No! There’s a surgery in progress. What right do you have to pull the surgeon out?" Jody tried to shove past me, ready to rush in and drag him out.
"Isaac is about to die, and you’re still blocking me from getting the doctor. Are you trying to get him killed?" She glared at me fiercely, as if the situation on the other side was truly more critical than the one inside the operating room.
I let out a cold laugh and said flatly, "Isaac isn’t going to die. Stop lying. You and I both know he doesn’t have anything wrong with him."
Shock and disbelief flashed across her face. Then she raised her voice and shouted toward the operating room, trying to get Dad to stop the surgery and come out.
Earlier, Dad had stepped out once to tell me how long the operation would take. I had looked him straight in the eye and told him that he had to finish Mom’s surgery.
No matter who called him, no matter what the situation was, he was not to come out. He didn’t know what was going on, but he still agreed.
In my previous life, I clearly remembered that he wasn’t supposed to be on the night shift that day, yet he had been there.
Later, I found out someone had swapped shifts with him, which was why he ended up on duty.
Even though I had let Isaac take the surgery slot back then, Dad told me afterward that Isaac had never even entered the operating room.
When he went into the prep room to get ready for surgery, he suddenly blacked out and lost consciousness. When he came to, the operating room was empty.
Then came the news that Isaac had died, and the police immediately showed up to take people in for questioning. At that moment, I finally understood Corinne’s plan, and I knew exactly how to deal with her.
I forcefully pulled Jody away, afraid she would try to interfere with the surgery again.
Suddenly, a piercing wail echoed through the ER lobby. Corinne had already taken out her phone and started a livestream, claiming that Isaac had died because he had missed the surgery.
The moment she saw me, she went hysterical, turning the camera straight at me.
"It’s her! She’s the one who bribed the doctor and stole Isaac’s surgery slot! Isaac swallowed a blade and was coughing up blood. Despite him being in critical condition, she still refused to let him have the surgery!
"She used money to manipulate the doctor and got Isaac killed! He’s lying in the morgue right now!"
Corinne cried her heart out, accusing me while playing the victim.
With the sensational headline and her performance, the livestream’s viewer count exploded within seconds.
The moment I appeared on camera, the number of viewers shot past 100,000. Comments and virtual gifts flooded the screen. The chat was filled with insults directed at me.
"What kind of person does this? Stealing a child’s chance at surgery… Absolutely disgusting!"
"The kid was coughing up blood with the blade stuck in his airway, and this evil woman caused his death. What a tragedy!"
I stood calmly in front of Corinne, looking straight at her without a hint of panic. "I never realized you were such a good actress. After more than ten years as my best friend, this is how you stab me in the back?
"Mom was in a car accident an hour ago. Glass pierced her chest, and her ribs are broken. Are you saying that’s less serious than Isaac’s condition?
"And we were here first. Everyone here can testify to that. What right do you have to frame me?"
Corinne was shaken by my composure. She didn’t know how to respond. Sweat beaded on her forehead as her whole body trembled.
Refusing to give her a chance to speak, I immediately turned to the camera and held up the news report about the car accident.
