Chapter 5

I crawled.

The wool rug tore at my scraped knees as I moved toward Darcy’s chair. The woman filming adjusted her angle to capture my bandaged hand, my hospital gown, and the blood drying beneath the stitches on my cheek.

Darcy held out her left hand.

“Louder than a whisper,” she said. “I want the recording to be useful.”

I bent over her engagement ring.

The diamond touched my lips.

“Darcy Sherman is the real artist,” I said. “She is the future Mrs. Palmer.”

Darcy smiled at the camera. “Again.”

I repeated the words.

Felix stood behind me, silent and watchful.

The third time, my voice almost failed. I forced it out anyway.

“Darcy Sherman is the real artist. She is the future Mrs. Palmer.”

The woman stopped recording.

Darcy withdrew her hand and wiped the ring on her skirt. “That will do.”

Felix slid the contract toward me.

I signed with my left hand. The letters came out uneven because my knuckles were swelling, but my name was legible.

Felix checked every page, then countersigned the transfer. Only after the final signature dried did he take a plastic access card from his pocket and toss it onto the rug.

“East District Medical Center,” he said. “Room 412.”

Relief hit so hard it made me dizzy. I grabbed the card.

“Call them now,” I demanded. “Authorize the surgery.”

“I will speak to the administrator after you leave.”

“That was not the agreement.”

“It was the only agreement you were going to receive.”

Darcy laughed. “Go see the old woman. You should have just enough time.”

Something in her tone stopped me.

“What does that mean?”

Felix collected the signed pages into a leather folder. “It means you report to Willow Creek tomorrow morning. If you run, I will find you.”

I stared at him, but his face revealed nothing.

Then I ran.

Rain hammered the pavement outside Palmer Tower. A cab pulled to the curb, and I yanked open the rear door.

“East District Medical Center,” I said. “As fast as you can.”

The driver looked at the blood on my gown and the plaster around my hand. “You need an emergency room.”

“I need East District.” I pushed the access card through the partition. “I will pay triple when we arrive.”

Twenty minutes later, the cab skidded beneath the hospital awning.

I swiped the card at the locked entrance and followed signs to the private cardiac unit. The corridor was too quiet. No nurses hurried between rooms. No alarms sounded. My wet slippers slapped against the polished floor.

Room 412 stood at the end of the hall.

I opened the door.

The ventilator was silent.

A white sheet covered the figure on the bed from head to toe.

My body stopped understanding how to move. I reached the mattress one step at a time and pulled back the sheet.

My grandmother’s face was gray and still. The breathing tube had been removed. Her silver hair was neatly combed, as though someone had prepared her for a photograph.

“No.”

The word came out without sound.

I touched her cheek with my left hand. Her skin was cold.

A doctor entered behind me. His badge read Dr. Gable.

“You are not authorized to be in this room,” he said.

“Why is she dead?”

He stopped when he saw the Palmer access card in my hand.

“I signed the papers,” I said. “Felix Palmer promised to restore the guarantee.”

Dr. Gable’s expression tightened. He removed a form from his clipboard.

“The withdrawal order was executed at 2:15 this afternoon.”

I read the time of death printed beneath the hospital seal.

Three hours earlier.

Before I entered Felix’s office. Before I crawled across his rug. Before I kissed Darcy’s ring and signed away the last pieces of my life.

“He knew,” I whispered.

The doctor said nothing.

“He made me beg for someone who was already dead.”

“Mr. Palmer’s office instructed us to direct all questions to counsel.”

“You removed support from a stable patient.”

“We were told the family had chosen comfort measures.”

“I am her family.”

“The file listed a Palmer representative as financial guarantor and emergency contact.”

My fingers crushed the paper. “Who signed the order?”

Dr. Gable looked toward the doorway. “You need to leave.”

That was answer enough.

I took my grandmother’s silver locket from the bedside tray and fastened it around my neck. Then I covered her face again, smoothing the sheet until no crease remained.

Outside, the rain had become a downpour.

I walked beyond the security cameras and stopped beneath the dead light of an abandoned parking structure. My stolen phone was still gone, but the hospital room had contained an emergency handset. I had slipped its removable SIM into an old backup device hidden inside the lining of my coat—a precaution from a life I had sworn never to return to.

The screen lit on the third attempt.

I opened an encrypted dialer disguised as a calculator and entered twelve digits from memory.

The line rang once.

A distorted voice answered. “Identify yourself.”

“Aria Sterling.”

Silence followed.

“We believed you had severed contact,” the voice said. “Your grandmother requested that your file remain closed.”

“She is dead.”

The rain struck the concrete around me in hard silver lines.

“Do you require extraction?”

“No.” I looked at my reflection in a black puddle: stitched face, ruined hand, white gown stained red. “I need the Sherman identity file reopened. I need every offshore record connected to Palmer Group. And I need the Aura authentication compound delivered to the villa before sunrise.”

The voice sharpened. “What are you planning?”

I closed my hand around my grandmother’s locket.

“I do not want Felix and Darcy dead,” I said. “Death would be mercy.”

A car passed on the road above, headlights sweeping across the wet concrete.

“I want their names exposed, their money stripped away, and every door they locked around me closed on them instead.”

“Understood.”

“One more thing.”

“Yes?”

“Darcy is preparing to sign my paintings for the charity gala.”

I watched the rain wash blood from my knuckles.

“Send the vial,” I said. “Tomorrow, she signs her own arrest warrant.”
