"Keep the meter running," I told the driver, pulling the heavy car door shut against the howling wind.

"You sure, lady? They kicked you out without a coat." The driver glanced at the rearview mirror, his eyes lingering on my bare arms. "You will freeze before we hit the highway."

"Just drive." I brushed a thick layer of snow off the lid of the old wooden box resting on my lap.

The iron gates of the Sinclair estate shrank in the rear window, swallowing the last three years of my life. I did not look back.

I dug into my purse and pulled out my silver pocket knife. The metal felt like ice against my palm.

"Hey, no weapons back there," the driver warned. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, swerving slightly on the slick road.

"It is a letter opener," I replied.

I jammed the blade into the tiny seam at the bottom of the box. Wood splintered under the pressure. I wedged the knife deeper, twisting the handle.

"Careful," the driver muttered. "You are going to slice your hand open."

"I have survived worse cuts today." I pushed down with all my weight.

A loud crack echoed in the small cab. The false bottom popped free, flipping over onto the floor mats.

Beneath it lay a bed of faded red velvet. Resting on top was a folded piece of thick, yellowed parchment.

"What did you find?" the driver asked, craning his neck at the next red light. "Treasure?"

"Something better."

I unfolded the stiff paper. A twenty-year-old trust document. My eyes skimmed the dense legal text until they hit the bottom line. Eleanor Croft. My grandmother's signature looped across the page in faded black ink.

Right there, in a single clause the Sinclair family had clearly never bothered to read, was the answer to everything. The trust did not just hold shares. It held a controlling stake. Fifty-one percent of Sinclair Enterprises, held in escrow until the day I claimed it.

I traced the figure with my fingertip and let out a slow breath that fogged the cold window.

"Change of plans," I told the driver, folding the document and slipping it into my coat. "Take me to the Grand Plaza. The Sinclairs are throwing a gala tonight, and I would hate to miss my own homecoming."
