For the next three days, nobody apologized.

Not Adrian.

Not Ryan.

Not even me.

That was the strange part.

Usually, I was the first one to make peace.

The first one to smooth things over.

The first one to convince myself that things weren't as bad as they seemed.

This time, I couldn't.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Adrian pouring wine for Olivia.

Every time Ryan spoke, I remembered him telling me I smelled like cooking oil.

And every time I looked around the house, I realized how invisible I had become.

By Friday morning, Adrian was preparing for an away game in Chicago.

His suitcase sat open on the bed.

Normally, I would have packed everything already.

Training gear.

Recovery equipment.

Vitamins.

Travel documents.

Extra phone charger.

Protein snacks.

Every detail.

This time, the suitcase remained empty.

Adrian walked into the bedroom after his shower and stopped.

"Why isn't my luggage packed?"

I didn't look up from my laptop.

"I'm working."

A long silence followed.

"Claire."

I continued typing.

"Your flight isn't until four."

His voice sharpened.

"That's not the point."

I almost laughed.

Exactly.

That wasn't the point.

The point was that for seven years, he had expected me to handle everything without ever acknowledging it.

Now that I stopped, suddenly it mattered.

"Then what's the point?" I asked.

Adrian stared at me.

Something unreadable crossed his face.

Annoyance.

Confusion.

Maybe both.

Finally, he walked to the closet and started packing himself.

Ten minutes later I heard him mutter a curse.

I didn't offer help.

That afternoon, Ryan came home from school.

"Mom!"

"I'm in the office."

He ran into the room holding a permission slip.

"We need a parent volunteer for Career Day."

I smiled automatically.

"Okay."

Then he added:

"I already told my teacher Olivia could come."

The smile disappeared.

Ryan didn't notice.

He was too excited.

"She was on TV yesterday."

"Ryan."

"What?"

I set my laptop aside.

"Why would Olivia come to your school?"

He looked confused.

"Because she's famous."

"I'm your mother."

His forehead wrinkled.

The words seemed genuinely difficult for him to understand.

"I know."

The answer landed like a punch.

I know.

And yet he had chosen someone else.

I looked at my son for a long moment.

The little boy I had carried for nine months.

The child whose nightmares I comforted.

Whose fevers I stayed awake through.

Whose soccer practices I never missed.

And somehow, somewhere along the way, I'd become less important than a celebrity.

"Ask your father," I said quietly.

Ryan frowned.

"Why are you acting weird lately?"

I didn't answer.

Because I wasn't sure I knew.

That evening, Adrian called from Chicago.

For years, those calls had been the highlight of my day.

Tonight, I almost didn't answer.

Almost.

"Hello."

"Did Ryan finish his homework?"

No greeting.

No how are you.

Just responsibility.

"He did."

"Good."

Silence.

I waited.

Nothing came.

Finally, I said:

"How was the flight?"

"Fine."

Another silence.

God.

How had I spent seven years married to this man?

Then Adrian spoke again.

"I saw another article today."

I knew immediately what article he meant.

The interview.

The backlash.

The internet had not reacted kindly to his comments.

Thousands of women were calling him arrogant.

Sponsors had begun asking questions.

For the first time, public opinion wasn't entirely on his side.

"So?" I asked.

His voice cooled.

"You could've clarified things."

I laughed.

Actually laughed.

The sound surprised both of us.

"Clarified what?"

"That I wasn't insulting you."

"You weren't?"

"Claire."

"No, seriously. Explain it to me."

He exhaled sharply.

"You know what I meant."

"No."

"Don't do this."

There it was again.

That irritation.

As though I were making things difficult.

As though the problem wasn't what he'd said.

The problem was that I remembered it.

"You know what's funny?" I asked.

"What?"

"For years, I thought you were emotionally unavailable."

Adrian went quiet.

I continued.

"But that's not true."

"Claire—"

"No. You're perfectly capable of being thoughtful."

The livestream flashed through my mind.

The wine.

The smile.

The attention.

"You just save it for other people."

Silence.

Then:

"You're overreacting."

The call ended thirty seconds later.

Not because we solved anything.

Because Adrian had a team dinner.

Of course he did.

The next morning, my phone rang.

Daniel Reed.

I stared at the screen for several seconds before answering.

"Hello?"

"Mrs. Hale."

"It's Claire."

A brief pause.

Then:

"Claire."

His voice softened.

"How are you doing?"

Nobody should've been surprised by how close that question brought me to tears.

"I'm okay."

"Liar."

I smiled despite myself.

"Is that your professional opinion?"

"Absolutely."

For the first time in days, I laughed.

A real laugh.

Daniel seemed pleased.

"That's better."

I leaned back in my chair.

"What do you want, Daniel?"

"I'm working on a story."

My smile faded.

"About Adrian?"

"About you."

That got my attention.

"Me?"

"Did you know that half of your husband's sponsors think you're his manager?"

I blinked.

"What?"

"I've spent a week talking to people in the sports industry."

Daniel's tone changed.

More serious now.

"Claire, do you know how many people told me Adrian's career would've collapsed years ago without you?"

I sat upright.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel gave a short laugh.

"I'm talking about contract negotiations."

"What?"

"Crisis management."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Charity partnerships."

I stared at the wall.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

A realization began forming.

"Daniel..."

"Yeah?"

"Most of those things were my job."

The line went silent.

Then:

"I know."

The words hit harder than they should have.

Because nobody had ever said them before.

Nobody had ever looked at my work and called it work.

They called it helping.

Supporting.

Being a good wife.

Daniel continued.

"The problem is nobody knows that."

My chest tightened.

Because he was right.

Every interview.

Every article.

Every public appearance.

The credit always went somewhere else.

Usually Adrian.

Sometimes his management team.

Lately...

Olivia.

My stomach turned.

"Why are you telling me this?"

Daniel's answer came immediately.

"Because somebody should."

That night, after Ryan went to bed, I opened the filing cabinet in my office.

The one nobody touched except me.

Hundreds of folders filled the drawers.

Contracts.

Schedules.

Sponsor agreements.

Public relations strategies.

Crisis plans.

Charity proposals.

Seven years of work.

I pulled out one folder.

Then another.

Then another.

As midnight approached, the floor around me disappeared beneath stacks of paperwork.

Evidence.

Proof.

Reality.

My phone buzzed.

A text message.

From Adrian.

Landing tomorrow.

Need you to pick me up at the airport.

No please.

No thank you.

Just another instruction.

For a long moment, I stared at the message.

Then I looked around the room.

At seven years of sacrifices.

Seven years of unpaid labor.

Seven years of being treated like I existed solely to make everyone else's life easier.

Slowly, I typed a reply.

Get a car service.

Three dots appeared instantly.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally:

What?

I stared at the screen.

For the first time in seven years, Adrian Hale sounded confused.

Good.

Maybe confusion was the first step.

Because something in this marriage was finally changing.
