Chapter 2

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

Not because I wanted to.

Because after seven years of marriage, my body no longer understood how to sleep in.

I lay in bed staring at the ceiling for a few seconds before remembering everything.

The livestream.

Olivia.

Ryan.

Adrian.

The anniversary dinner.

The way my husband had looked at me as if I were the unreasonable one.

A dull ache settled in my chest.

Then I got up anyway.

Because someone still had to make breakfast.

By seven o'clock, pancakes were on the table, Ryan's lunchbox was packed, and Adrian's coffee sat in its usual place.

Neither of them thanked me.

Ryan was busy watching soccer highlights on his tablet.

Adrian was scrolling through his phone.

The silence stretched between us.

Finally, Ryan looked up.

"Dad, are you seeing Olivia today?"

I nearly dropped my coffee mug.

Adrian didn't.

He simply said, "Maybe."

Ryan grinned.

"Can I come too?"

"We'll see."

I stared at my husband.

"We'll see?"

Adrian finally looked at me.

"What?"

"You don't think that's inappropriate?"

His expression immediately hardened.

"Claire."

That tone again.

The one that meant stop talking.

The one that meant you're embarrassing me.

I put down my fork.

"No. Explain it to me."

Ryan glanced between us nervously.

Adrian exhaled.

"It was dinner."

"You keep saying that."

"Because that's what it was."

I laughed.

A short, humorless laugh.

"If I had dinner alone with my ex-boyfriend and took Ryan with me, would you be saying the same thing?"

His jaw tightened.

"That's different."

"Why?"

"Because it is."

Of course.

That was always his answer.

The rules applied to everyone except Adrian Hale.

Ryan frowned.

"Mom, why do you care so much?"

The question hit harder than anything Adrian had said.

Why do I care?

Because he's my husband.

Because I spent seven years building this family.

Because I spent seven years believing we were a team.

Instead, I smiled.

A tired smile.

"Finish your breakfast."

Ryan rolled his eyes.

Exactly like his father.

The gesture made something twist inside me.

A few years ago, I would have thought it was cute.

Now it just hurt.

By noon, the internet had exploded.

The livestream clips were everywhere.

TikTok.

Instagram.

Sports blogs.

Entertainment sites.

Even major news outlets.

The headlines were getting worse.

America's Soccer King Reunites With First Love?

The Woman Behind Adrian Hale's Smile.

Fans Demand Answers.

I was answering sponsor emails when the doorbell rang.

Three sharp knocks.

Then another.

I frowned.

Nobody was supposed to be here.

When I opened the door, three reporters immediately turned toward me.

Cameras.

Microphones.

Flashlights.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

A woman with bright red lipstick stepped forward.

"Mrs. Hale, do you have a moment?"

I should have closed the door.

Instead, years of handling Adrian's public image kicked in.

"What is this regarding?"

The reporter smiled.

"Your husband."

Of course.

Everything was always about Adrian.

"Mrs. Hale, what do you think about your husband's relationship with Olivia Hart?"

Another reporter pushed forward.

"Do you believe they're having an affair?"

A third added, "Are you considering divorce?"

I felt exhausted.

Not angry.

Just tired.

Before I could answer, another voice interrupted.

"Move."

The reporters immediately stepped aside.

Adrian.

Still in training clothes.

Still impossibly handsome.

Still looking annoyed.

Not because I was being harassed.

Because the media was inconveniencing him.

The reporters instantly surrounded him.

"Adrian!"

"Can we get a statement?"

"Are you and Olivia dating?"

"How does your wife feel about the situation?"

Adrian adjusted his sunglasses.

Calm.

Collected.

Completely unbothered.

"First of all," he said, "stop insulting Olivia."

The reporters froze.

So did I.

Adrian continued.

"She's worked hard to build her career."

The female reporter blinked.

"Insulting her?"

"Yes."

His voice remained cool.

"Suggesting she's involved in some scandal every time she has dinner with a friend is disrespectful."

Friend.

Right.

The word almost made me laugh.

One reporter quickly asked, "But many fans believe Olivia resembles your wife."

Adrian looked genuinely confused.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

"No?"

"No."

His eyes flickered toward me.

For one second.

Then away.

"My wife and Olivia are completely different."

Something inside me tightened.

The reporter sensed it too.

"Different how?"

Adrian shrugged.

"My wife stays home."

The world seemed to stop.

"My wife doesn't work."

Every reporter was listening now.

"She doesn't need to support herself."

I felt heat rushing to my face.

Adrian kept talking.

Completely unaware.

Or maybe he just didn't care.

"Olivia works incredibly hard. Long filming hours. Constant travel. Public pressure."

He smiled slightly.

"I don't think it's fair to compare a homemaker with someone building a career in entertainment."

The silence that followed was deafening.

Even the reporters looked uncomfortable.

I couldn't breathe.

Not because what he said was true.

Because it wasn't.

I managed our home.

His parents.

His schedule.

His sponsors.

His endorsements.

His charity events.

His media team.

Half the reason Adrian's public image remained spotless was because I spent years cleaning up the messes nobody else saw.

And yet—

According to him—

I was just a woman who stayed home.

One reporter slowly turned toward me.

Her expression almost looked sympathetic.

"Mrs. Hale?"

I realized everyone was waiting.

Waiting to see if I would defend myself.

Waiting to see if I would cry.

Waiting to see if I would finally break.

Instead, I smiled.

Because that's what I'd been trained to do.

Smile.

Protect Adrian.

Protect the brand.

Protect the family.

Even when nobody protected me.

"He's right."

The words tasted bitter.

"Olivia works very hard."

The reporters exchanged looks.

They knew.

Everyone knew.

Adrian nodded as if satisfied.

Then he casually draped an arm around my shoulder.

The gesture looked affectionate.

Supportive.

Perfect for photographs.

His voice lowered.

"See?"

He looked at the reporters.

"My wife understands."

I nearly laughed.

Understands what?

That she wasn't worth defending?

That another woman deserved more respect than she did?

The cameras continued flashing.

Adrian smiled.

The public smile.

The charming smile.

The smile people loved.

The smile I'd spent years helping him maintain.

Then he looked at the reporters.

"If you have questions about family matters in the future, talk to Claire."

I stared at him.

He didn't even notice.

He was already walking away.

"Adrian—"

A reporter called after him.

"What about Olivia?"

He didn't turn around.

"Leave her alone."

Then he got into his car and drove away.

Just like that.

The reporters slowly dispersed.

Most followed Adrian.

Only one remained.

The man stood near the sidewalk holding a notebook.

Early thirties.

Dark suit.

Kind eyes.

I recognized him immediately.

Daniel Reed.

The journalist who had texted me last night.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he handed me a business card.

I looked down.

Sports Weekly.

Daniel Reed.

Senior Investigative Reporter.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

The question almost made me cry.

Because nobody had asked me that in years.

Not Adrian.

Not Ryan.

Not even myself.

I swallowed hard.

"I'm fine."

Daniel glanced toward the road where Adrian's car had disappeared.

"No."

His voice wasn't cruel.

Just honest.

"You're really good at pretending."

For the first time all day, I couldn't force a smile.

Daniel slipped his hands into his pockets.

"You know," he said, "most people would've exploded after hearing what he said."

I looked away.

"Maybe I'm used to it."

His expression changed.

Something between surprise and pity.

That somehow felt worse.

After a moment, he nodded.

"If you ever decide you're tired of being used to it..."

He pointed to the business card.

"You know where to find me."

Then he walked away.

I stood there alone on the front porch.

The afternoon sun felt strangely cold.

In my hand was Daniel's card.

Inside the house were the dishes waiting to be washed.

The laundry waiting to be folded.

The life waiting for me to continue carrying it.

For years, I had believed endurance was love.

Now, for the first time, I wasn't so sure.
