Chapter 1

During the holiday season, a flood hits. The company's warehouse is submerged up to the third floor.

Due to the emergency, I have my assistant tell everyone to come back a day early to help. I promise that the company will provide stipends and extra time off to make up for this.

But on that day, a Gen Z employee goes live across the internet to report me.

"Oh, my God. It's 2025, yet there are still companies forcing employees to adjust their time off and work overtime! Is this heartless boss so broke that she needs to exploit us like this? Will she die if she doesn't squeeze us out of every drop of usefulness? Company notices override the law. Impressive stuff, this is!"

Soon, the company ends up on the trending list due to criticism from the online community. Even the regulators come knocking to hold us accountable.

In the end, the company is forced to cancel the notice. A lot of equipment isn't salvaged in time, resulting in significant losses.

The employee even posts a victory lap. "Give the boss a tiny lesson—see if she dares to force overtime again!"

I'm so angry that I laugh out loud. I tell my assistant to cancel the annual benefit we give all employees—an entire month of paid time off for Christmas and the New Year holidays.

If we have to stick strictly to the law, then fine. Have it your way!

It was the first day back at work. I stood at the warehouse entrance with my fists clenched.

Our auto parts warehouse was five stories tall. Three whole floors had been swallowed by floodwater, and nearly all our finished goods were ruined.

The losses were pushing close to ten million dollars. But if we could repair the equipment in time, we could still salvage the situation.

I checked my watch.

It was half an hour past start time, but not a single employee had shown up.

Just then, my assistant, Rachel Colson, rushed over with a tablet in hand. Her forehead was covered in sweat. "Ms. Sadler, you need to see this!"

I took the tablet and realized I'd been reported.

In the video, a young woman held up her phone and raged at the camera. "Look at this notice! My company is making us come back on the last day of the holiday! The boss might as well write her own labor laws!"

She shoved the notice into the lens. "Who even does this anymore? I'm honestly stunned! Anyway, I'm not going back. Whatever happens, happens. I'll just quit if I have to! Don't worry—I've already reported this to the authorities. Gen Z isn't putting up with this crap!"

The comments exploded as everyone backed her up.

"You're so brave, queen! Say no to workplace gaslighting!"

"Bosses like that only know how to exploit others. Not going back is the right move!"

"Man, your boss is in real trouble this time. Reporting them was spot-on!"

"I saw the notice is from Sadler Group. Can't believe a company that big still forces employees to come in and work overtime!"

"No wonder Sadler Group got so big. Sounds like it's built on exploiting workers."

"Gotcha. I'm boycotting Sadler Group from now on!"

I shook with anger. The notice clearly had a compensation addendum attached! Anyone who came back to help would get triple pay plus an extra day off. Why hadn't she talked about that?

I drew a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. Then, I opened WhatsApp and forwarded the livestream link to the employee group chat.

"The company warehouse has been flooded, and we urgently need everyone to come back and help with recovery. If the product launch is delayed, everyone's year-end bonus takes the hit. Any employees in the livestream—come to the company now. Let's talk this through."

Less than ten seconds after I sent that, the young woman in the livestream burst out laughing. She slapped a screenshot of the group chat right onto the stream. "See? My boss wants me to come in and get chewed out!

"But tell me—what exactly did I do wrong? Isn't she the one ignoring the legal holidays? She's even using our year-end bonus to threaten us. Who does she think she is?"

She stared down the lens, her voice raised in challenge. "If my year-end bonus is short by even a penny, I'll take this all the way and fight her to the end!"

Rachel glanced at my darkened expression and lowered her voice. "Ms. Sadler, she's the Gen Z management trainee we hired last month. Her name is Savannah Tate. Mr. Saxton brought her in himself."
