Chapter 2

The figure, or creature emerged fully from the fog, tall and sinuous, its body shifting like smoke wrapped around bone. Its eyes burned like molten gold, cutting through the mist and fixing on Kael with unsettling intelligence. Fear tightened his chest, but instinct saved him. He rolled sideways just as the creature lunged, its claws slicing the air where his head had been a heartbeat before. Kael slashed upward with his dagger, feeling resistance as the blade met shadowy flesh.

The creature hissed sharply and retreated into the mist, leaving behind faint claw marks glowing dimly on the damp ground. Kael crouched and studied them. The markings pulsed with a pale light, warm beneath his fingertips. Magic... he realized, his pulse quickening. This forest was no ordinary place. It breathed, shifted, and now it bled light.

Soft whispers drifted between the trees, carried on a wind that smelled faintly of smoke and rain. The voices spoke his name in tones both gentle and sorrowful. They beckoned him deeper, calling to memories he wished he could forget.

Night descended too quickly, wrapping the forest in velvet darkness. His map was useless now-the paths twisted and moved like living things. Loneliness pressed into his chest, stirring regret and unresolved guilt. Yet something unseen urged him onward.

Through the fog, a silver glow appeared-a winding trail of light. The whispers grew louder, urgent now. Fear warred with curiosity inside him. In the end, the pull was stronger. Kael stepped onto the glowing path, unaware that each step carried him closer to the forest's hidden truth.

With just a week left until the mating ceremony, Aiden, my Alpha and mate, shaved off all my long hair while I was sleeping. That evening, Zaria, the Gamma from a rival pack, showed up with her alluring curls, offering an apology. "I’m so sorry, Mazie," she said, her voice dripping with false sincerity. "I was joking with Aiden, telling him I shaved my head to become a nun. I never thought he’d try to comfort me by not only shaving his own head but also yours." Aiden probably expected a big reaction from me, so he quickly moved to protect her, his Alpha tone commanding the room. "It was all my idea. Zaria had nothing to do with it, so don’t blame her," he insisted, his voice firm yet dismissive. "Besides, hair grows back. We can just wear wigs for the ceremony, don’t you think?" What Aiden didn’t know was that I no longer intended to complete the mating bond. My newfound parents, a gentle Omega and a supportive Beta from my new pack in France, had reached out to me, offering a place in their pack.

The pack house erupted in cheers as Brady's distinctive howl echoed across our territory, signaling his victorious return from the rogue attacks. My heart hammered against my ribs as I smoothed down my ceremonial dress—the one I'd been saving for five years, waiting for this moment when we would finally complete our mate bond. I stood at the front of the gathered pack members, my Luna aura naturally commanding respect as whispers of excitement rippled through the crowd. Elder Victoria nodded approvingly at my composed stance, while Marcus Reed, Brady's Beta, shifted nervously beside her. Something felt wrong. The air carried an unfamiliar scent mixed with Brady's familiar pine and earth—something floral and cloying that made my wolf restless. "Luna Isabelle," Marcus approached hesitantly, his usual confidence replaced by uncomfortable tension. "Perhaps you should... prepare yourself." Before I could question his cryptic warning, the massive oak doors of the pack house swung open. Brady strode in, his Alpha presence filling the room as pack members automatically bowed their heads in submission.
